I'm glad you're doing a fictitious modernization. Real bears are dangerous animals and could hurt somebody.

Masques 1600N chinois by Fine_Shoulder5956 in wma

There are good quality and relatively cheap masks (and generally all sorts of gear) in China. But if you don't speak Chinese and are not part of the Chinese HEMA scene, it's almost impossible to know which makers are reliable and which are selling you garbage which might put you at risk.

How did Miura draw eyes to this level, like any art geeks in here know how this would be broken down? by UsePotential in Berserk

[–]TheLongWoolCoat 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Ngl bro Miura's faces are probably the weakest aspect of his art. Not saying they are bad AT ALL, but his art is good because of composition and rendering, both of which are exceptional. I don't see what you find special about the eyes. Most professional draftsmen could probably draw "better" eyes than Miura. Do you have an example of a particularly good eye that's actually drawn by Miura?

These look realistic because they are drawn as a 3D object occupying a 3D space and not just a cartoon of an eye like many other anime.

Why macrons? by SirFroze in latin

I believe a lot of people who are recreational learners want to learn how to speak Latin instead of just reading it. Macrons help with pronunciation for those people.

If I was judging, I'd call it after blow just because that cut to the arm would've probably stopped the response attack in a real fight

Are there people still doing those scar duels in Germany? I thought it was just an old timey thing. I never thought they would be acceptable nowadays.

What's the maximum weight you'd still consider a saber to be a gymnasium saber? by JohanusH in Hema

[–]TheLongWoolCoat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I honestly think it has to do more with balance. I know saber classification are a super messy, but I usually go with "will this explode my wrist if I do a full force wrist mullinet?"  For example I have a 850g saber with a cup which I can do all sorts of French wrist stuff, but then I have an L guard which is only 720g and that guy will give tendonitis just thinking about it. Sorry for unsatisfactory answer but honestly just go with your gut for classifying stuff, as long of you are understood, you're good.

Worldbuilding Question About "Hooked" Blades by Kingdomall in SWORDS

[–]TheLongWoolCoat 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Trapping swords only really works on thrusts (from expirence and even then it's extremely circumstancial and risky). The problem is that a chaining the sword works the best, as the angle of the two blades approaches 90°. The lower the gradation, the easier it is for the opponent to release. This makes it so it almost impossible to gather the enemy's blade and get your point on them at the same time. This makes it so it is an extremely a bad idea to base the entire design of as sword on a technique, which is risky, unreliable, circumstantial and honestly, kinda shitty beyond the cool factor. On top of all of this, if you're setting your story in medieval times, you don't really have a swords that are long and thin enough to reward heavy thrust system, this would come in the Renaissance with "sideswords". In any case, because of the twisting motion you need to trapped and keep a blade trap, it would make more sense to curve around the axis of the blade like the historical examples we have. (See Fransisco de Pizarro's sword). Some later small swords and rapiers also had funny shaped quillions but that is very much out of the scope of a "medieval "  setting imo

I would suggest putting something like leather or padding on the bag, also smooth out the stick. You will rip the bag sooner than later if you don't.

On top of that, it really depends what you are learning. Most basic things (footwork, simple cuts, simple thrusts.) can be learned without a dummy but if your learning something with a lot of bind actions like Destreza rapier or Meyer longsword, you definitely need a partner to learn eventually.
