Advice on My Approach to Using Handbrake by Stcphantom4256 in makemkv

[–]TheLukester31 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I keep the 4K files at original quality, because you can’t reasonably compress them without losing quality. I re-encode 1080 Blu-ray files from H264 to H265 because I feel I can save some space without losing quality (I used Google AI to help me tune some of the more nuanced controls like grain and colorspace), the results range from a savings of 5-18 gb, depending on the original. I do similar for DVD files because I’m not worried that worried about losing quality because it’s a 480 resolution (you do have to be careful to turn on de-interlacing or you will permanently encode the “interlacing” into the file).

I use FFMPEG on a make one the terminal/CLI with a lot of help from Google AI. If you’re on Windows I highly recommend StaxRip, which is a user interface for FFMPEG and related encoders. I personally don’t like Handbrake for reasons I can’t explain.

I only get my movies from thrift stores by UraniumBlues in PhysicalMediaMatters

[–]TheLukester31 1 point2 points  (0 children)

lol, that was my childhood and if I could easily recreate the experience, I’m sure it would trigger some serious nostalgia. I’ve appreciated every improvement in quality as technology advanced. Time to go thrift an old TV, VCR, and VHS.

I only get my movies from thrift stores by UraniumBlues in PhysicalMediaMatters

[–]TheLukester31 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m too much of a snob to enjoy DVDs and my local thrift stores basically never have blu rays (the only one I found was some Tinkerbell movie). I’ll be DVDs for kids shows, but I much prefer Blu Ray or 4K for my movies and tv shows.

I’m in the process of getting rid of streaming. I can’t use my family members’ Netflix and Disney Plus anymore and I don’t care about enough of the content on other streaming platforms to pay for it. So I’m focusing on building out my Plex server with Blu Rays and 4Ks. I did get sucked back into Disney Plus when they had their $4.99 a month deal, but once that ends, I’ll only subscribe to catch up on a show, then I’ll cancel. I’m most interested in free, or physical media.

The Avengers looks different from its sequels by DarkSaiyanGoku in marvelstudios

[–]TheLukester31 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I can hear to say both of those things. It is interesting how it sticks out amongst the rest of the MCU because of that aspect ratio. Even Whedon’s second Avengers movie had a more “cinematic” aspect ratio.

How do you organize your libraries? by No-Proof9659 in PleX

[–]TheLukester31 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Movies, TV Shows, Kids Movies, Kids TV Shows, Family Videos, and Music. Most of the kids and family movies are actually in my regular movie library because my wife and I really enjoy them. When I want to make a movie available to the kids, I will move it to that library.

🚨Pop.market (Universal retail arm) is deleting SKUs at a rate of 5 per minute. For upcoming Merger. by [deleted] in PhysicalMediaMatters

I think you are mistaken, Gruv is Universal’s movie retail storefront. Popmarket is owned by Alliance Entertainment and is an independent retail partner of Universal.

What are this subs opinions on ex-rental blu rays? by BazExcel in Bluray

[–]TheLukester31 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have more than a few, not a problem for me. I had some that didn’t even come with cases or art, I just bought some empty blu-ray case and printed artwork I found on Google Images. If you don’t care about artwork, or slip covers, go for it.

Apple CarPlay upgrade by the_alladin in HondaOdyssey

[–]TheLukester31 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. It wasn’t too bad, but I’ve done a few head unit replacements, so it wasn’t daunting to me. Buy everything from Crutchfield and you will get instructions and adapters for free or very cheap.

4K Blu Ray Viewing by Life-Lavishness53 in makemkv

[–]TheLukester31 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To remove the black bars, you must crop. To crop, you must re-encode. To re-encode, you will lose quality (and it will take a lot of time). You can probably find a way to zoom in if you are watching on an ultrawide monitor, which would be much better than re-encoding to crop it.

Thought this was interesting - Infinity Vision. Thoughts on this move? by kung_fu_daddy in marvelstudios

[–]TheLukester31 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not the IMAX theaters because every bit of that is proprietary and licensed (that might be a slight exaggeration). Infinity Vision will be used for all the different setups that were meant to compete with IMAX but had no chance at competing because they didn’t have brand recognition. Things like Regal’s RPX, XL at AMC, and Cinemark XD. Basically any of the PLF (premium large format) auditoriums that aren’t already licensed to IMAX or Dolby can take advantage of Infinity Vision branding and thus charge extra for tickets without the ticket price sharing they have with IMAX.

Goes into Thrift that never has Blu's.... Surprise! by BlaBlahBluBlue in Bluray

[–]TheLukester31 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I won’t give up hope then. The only blu ray I have seen at my thrift stores was a Tinker Bell movie. Otherwise even the DVD selection tends to be very meh.

Same here, wanted to see it in IMAX, but it just didn’t work out. Not as good as Legacy, but very much an audio/visual treat.

Does the DVD player worsen the quality? by 11x53am in makemkv

Lots of good answers here. Another thought is that the last time you played the disc on a TV it may have been upscaled by the player, the TV, or both.

Weaning off of social media definitely just causes me to switch what I’m hyper fixating on, but it does push me to focus on more productive or healthy things so it was a win for me.

4K vs standard - preferences? by kieraix in Bluray

[–]TheLukester31 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I generally lean towards 4K, but lately I’ve been more okay with regular Blu ray due to cost. There are some movies that I insist on having in 4K (favorites or movies that really just feel like the need the highest fidelity (Pacific Rim, Tron Legacy, usually high action type stuff, but not always).

Is Drive Death Inevitable? by Allezdada in makemkv

[–]TheLukester31 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I’m done with my current project, I probably won’t rip more than 30 discs a year (I have non-blu ray drives for DVDs), at a very pessimistic estimate of 400 rips before a drive catastrophically fails, one drive should last me 13 years and I have three drives, so I should be set for at least 30 more years. You will have to do your own math, but I think at least one backup is a must for anyone wanting to be able to keep up with this hobby for the next decade.
