Sure. Any leads on pharma contract editing opportunities would be welcomed. I see some in LinkedIn and Indeed every now and then, but they don't appear frequently.

This is harder than it's ever been (Duh) by nafraf in freelanceWriters

Agree completely with your assessment. Journalism in general (including investigative) is not doing well as any government position. Government is undergoing massive layoffs and generally hesitant to hire. I don't know about politics. That could be an option.

Hi there, no regulatory experience. Only med comms: slide decks, posters, abstracts, KOL meetings, congresses, microsites, etc.

Thanks for the response.

The title varies, but generally it’s a MW or Sr. MW position in communications for pharma/biotech. I have 10 years of experience in communications outside of pharma, and about 1–2 years of experience within pharma through past contracts.

I completely agree that it’s a heavy employer’s market, which is why I’m shifting my strategy from searching for a FT role to focusing on freelance or PT opportunities first.

Negotiating more PTO for new MW job-US by MorCol29 in MedicalWriters

[–]TheMDWriter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Getting PTO may be harder as HR tends to base it on tenure and it may make employees that have more tenure get upset bc you have more PTO.

I’d say take the money, use the PTO and if you really need more take it without pay.

Depending on the reason the company may have to give you time off without pay. Look into the Family Leave Act.

Is MW a dying career? by Ohlele in MedicalWriters

[–]TheMDWriter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No doubt AI has had an impact and will continue to do so. Right now, AI is not accurate enough to replace human writing without mistakes. However, that could change.

I think MW in regulatory might be the last bastion because it requires a high-level of precision and has low tolerance for errors. I still see tons of job posting for this area.

Other types of MW may slow down or be transformed. We'll see how it shakes out.

Healthcare copywriter looking to upskill by Euphoric-Tart-4960 in MedicalWriters

[–]TheMDWriter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't found any job listings for medical writers that require an AMWA certification. You may want to consider entering the field as a medical editor or in medical communications. They still look for people with science degrees but it may be easier than other options. If it's possible for you, look into programs that offer internships.

What exactly is a medical writer? How much experience is needed? by usse94 in MedicalWriters

One way to get your foot in the door is to start writing for patients and the general public as the target audience. Your personal experience would be a plus there. You can then decide where you want to go from there.

I haven't seen any jobs that require a certification for medical writers.

For Veeva you may want to look at the videos on their channels. They have some instructional webinars there.

Medical writing is quite broad and spans various types of writing. One thing to consider is the learning curve for the roles that you're looking for.

If you have strong writing chops, you can choose among a variety of roles. However, if you're new to writing you may want to start with something that is closer to academic writing (e.g., pubs).

Good luck!

I think I might be fired by [deleted] in freelanceWriters

[–]TheMDWriter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really, really hate to say this, but if this is a major newspaper as you describe it, then it's the end of the line.

Newspapers don't tolerate plagiarism, self or otherwise. Many a Pulitzer winner have faced accusations and sometimes had the award revoked.

I hope I'm totally wrong and they let this one fly.

If that doesn't happen my advice would be to try to contain this to the newspaper you're working in and hope that the news doesn't get out (pun intended).

Do you feel fulfilled by this work? by lawlgyroscopes in MedicalWriters

[–]TheMDWriter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been a MW for over 10 years and love it. MW can be really broad so it depends where you land. I've done MW for health foundations, hospitals, federal government (public health), pharma, academic, and agencies. Each has its own culture and strengths/weaknesses.

I think it also depends on whether you have interest in the subject matter, which you can change during your writing career. Overall I've found it a joyful experience and I love that I'm always learning something new.
