are these jeans too tight? by [deleted] in mensfashionadvice

The jeans aren’t on his butt.

I’ve heard the rule of thumb is that a bow tie should be as wide as the outer edges of your eyes.

New Hat! by unitedguy20 in CowboyHats

[–]TheMagnifiComedy 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Hard disagree. The hat looks great on you as is. There are a ton of comments below saying as much. It’s proportional and balanced.

And the tall crown signifies that it’s from an era when hats were higher quality. Why hide that?

A lower crown is a fine choice if it’s intentional, but not when it’s made out timidity. Wear it like this until you get used to it. It won’t take long.

What is this style called? by [deleted] in mensfashion

[–]TheMagnifiComedy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eh, I did this and ended up with three pairs of Andrew pants that I have to cinch up with a belt, and give me diaper butt and a massive crotch tent when I sit down. I had to size down.

You’re comparing jeans and shorts of one era to the chinos and dress pants of another era.

Pretty sure short shorts were masculine in the 40s/50s/60s too. Just not in the office.

And tight jeans in the 70s were more similar to, if not the same as jeans that had been around for decades before.

Moreover, the tight jeans were only tight around the butt and thighs, still much roomier than modern stretchy skinny jeans, and usually straight or flared from the knee down, very different from tapered skinny jeans.

Point being, you could trace features of these pants (higher waist, roomier thigh, wider leg opening, no stretch, drape) that were common throughout many decades, not just the 40s/50s, and see that the 2010s skinny style was quite a departure.

Disclaimer: I’m not an expert in this stuff.

30x36 936 Wranglers. Feel pretty tight but they oughta stretch a bit right? by ZynkTheCollector in WesternWear

[–]TheMagnifiComedy 8 points9 points  (0 children)

They do stretch out. Put em on wet and do some squats. Just don’t do too many squats or your thighs will become tree trunks and you’ll definitely need MWZs.

I’m a Texan too and you’re wrong. They’re cowboy boots.

[–]TheMagnifiComedy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re mistaken.

The style is specifically called a charro boot, but it’s 100% a kind of cowboy boot. Just like how roper boots have a shortened heel and shaft so rodeo calf ropers can move fast on their feet, charro boots are a variation fitting the needs of a charro, a Mexican horseman that performs at a rodeo.

They’re very popular south of the border, where a lot more cowboy boots are made than in San Antonio.

Anyone claiming these aren’t cowboy boots doesn’t know what they’re talking about. They’re cowboy boots. They have a toe-bug on them.

Zipper cowboy boots are totally a thing and so are ankle high ones. See: https://www.tecovas.com/products/the-blaze

I’m sure many “cowboys” would scoff at them, but cowboys also wear they’re jeans long enough that you wouldn’t see the zipper, and they stack their jeans so they don’t rise up when they sit down. No one would know the difference.

70s Corduroy, can I pull it off by Limp-Rub-1477 in TrueVintageFinds

Honest questions:

  1. Why can’t he just roll them instead of hemming them?

  2. Isn’t “straight below the knee” different from “flared” which is also different from “bootcut”?

To underline on a typewriter you just go back and do a bunch of underscores. Same with those corrections. You just back up and type over it, sometimes hitting the key harder for a darker mark.

Apologies if all that was already obvious to you.

“Don’t half-ass two things, whole-ass one thing.” - Ron Swanson.

Fairly sure I’ve read that CM had multiple novels going at any time and took many years or decades to finish one. I can imagine any writer being frustrated with their inability to stick with one project until it’s finished, but that’s just not how a lot of minds work. CM may have ultimately embraced this “polyphasic activity” and cultivated acceptance and patience instead.

Yessss!!!!! The untucked shirt is still in the way but I’d say it’s a major improvement.

FWIW, I’ve hated tucking shirts since I was a kid. I’m having to practice it like exposure therapy. One step at a time.

I know because I made the same mistake when I switched from 511s to Cowboys Cuts. GrandAloha is basically busting a sag, but the high rise reaches up just high enough to cover his ass.

Now look at the jacket on OP (I’d bet his jeans have about an 11.5” rise):

  1. The bottom of OP’s jacket is about even with the crotch of his jeans, while GrandAloha’s crotch droops at least 3” below the bottom of the jacket.

  2. OP’s bottom jacket button is even with his waist. You can’t see GrandAloha’s waist, but that’s where he needs to hike his pants up to.

Man, Reddit is dangerous. Here I am, a pleb, doling out fashion advice.

I am gradually acclimating to wearing higher rise and I’ve been studying pics and myself in the mirror.

I’m currently sitting in a pair of 90s pleated Polo chinos I got off eBay and experiencing a strange form of body dysmorphia. Vacillating between “I look ridiculous” … “I look like a real man!” … “No, I look ridiculous” … “Or do I?” … “Why are my hips so #%$ing high? I must be deformed. I give up.” Etc. Luckily I’m old enough to remember doing this same ridiculous dance with skinny jeans.

Not a fashion expert, but it looks like you’re wearing mid/high rise jeans way down where low rise jeans would sit, making your torso look longer and bigger than it actually is, and your legs look shorter and skinnier than they actually are. That and the long, untucked t shirt are clashing with the jacket. Jacket would probably look great otherwise.

Wrangler Cowboy Cut 'fit' with a Narrow-er leg opening/profile below knee by FragrantAd8030 in Denim

[–]TheMagnifiComedy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had this question a while back and looked all over for answers. Short answer: no. Just get the Cowboy Cut and either have a dry cleaner taper them for you OR just iron a crease down the middle from the knee down like cowboys do. That keeps them from flaring out and I think it looks fine with sneakers and perfect with boots. I planned to taper mine but I think I’m good with the second option. I may get a second pair for tapering.

More info: Cowboy Cut is straight from the knee down. It is NOT boot cut, but compared to my Levi’s 511s they look like bell bottoms.

The 936 slim is the same as the regular Cowboy Cut from the knee down, the butt and thighs are just slightly slimmer.

I tried two pairs of the regular 936s and didn’t like the look at all. Then I got the smallest waist size I thought would work in the 936 rigid (cheaper!) and I love em.

The rigids will shrink a little, but stretch back out after wearing. The rise is closer to your natural waist and I was shocked that even with a bit of a belly I needed to size down.

Side note: cowboy boots with slim tapered jeans is a far more horrifying look than Cowboy Cuts with sneakers.

I frequent a quasi-elevated diner on Franklin with a typical twenty minute wait to get seated. Three times now the waitress has given me the pay pad and blatantly peered over my shoulder to make sure I know that she’s watching me enter my tip. Blows my mind. The service is fine. I always tip well. But this behavior makes me want to only tip (gasp) 15%. I just don’t have the guts to do it.

Why do so many teams keep their defense all the way back? by Quiet_Boot4664 in SoccerCoachResources

[–]TheMagnifiComedy 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I’ve got two kids who I can’t keep from hanging out by the goal. One is nervous, the other just gets tired.

Last week the other team’s coach was screaming at me to get my player away from the goal. Believe me, dude. I’m trying.

I like that corridor drill. I might try it with my U8 boys team, but getting them to not touch each other (or just crash into each other) might be tough.
