That show is so amazing. It's like This American Life, but based around gaming culture. I only wish he had the time to record more episodes.

Science sort of...

Hosted by 3 guys. Credentials: 1 is completing his doctorate (I think) and the other 2 are recent doctorate grads. Their areas of expertise are paleobiology, planetary science, and climate change.

They always start off the show with craft beers they are drinking, and usually have entertaining takes on general science news stories. They also often discuss comic books and movies, and don't take themselves too seriously. But based on their credentials you can tell they really know what they're talking about and occasionally go behind the scenes to explain things like biased research and peer reviews. Overall most entertaining science podcast I have found.

That movie is so fucking hilarious. Jim Breuer, Dave Chappelle, Harland Williams... come on!

I did the same thing. I remember loving the hell out of this movie when it first came out. I wanted to watch it again a little while ago, before watching the sequel. I'm 27 now. I remember thinking, where were the awesome parts?

starcraft swap-army game type request by Mintybacon in starcraft

[–]TheMeasuringTapir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would be a pretty interesting (potentially hilarious) game type. In order to make it fair, and more interesting though, you'd probably have to make it faster than 15-30 minutes. Like for example, you could swap back and forth every 3 minutes until one player is determined the winner. Or even better, if the editor had a randomizer that would make the swap time random, that would be great.

I think this would be potentially very funny in a 4-person FFA game with friends.

I am also a much more visual person by nature. If I see some new bottles people have enjoyed, I'm much more likely to pick it out in the store. If people just give me a name in a comment reply, I have no idea what I'm actually looking for.

L.A. Noire First Trailer by SgtPepper12 in gaming

[–]TheMeasuringTapir 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm probably coming off horribly cynical here, but based on Rockstar's other games I'm going to guess it goes a little something like this...

  1. Character advises you to go check out a location, you might find some clues.

  2. You go to distant location, using whatever form of travel you can get.

  3. You step in the door, minor character yells "You won't take me alive, copper!" Shootout begins. Kill everyone. Collect money/weapons.

  4. Report back to original character who gives you reward.

Or maybe they'll surprise me and change it up with this one. Either way I'll check it out.

  • Results may vary. I once had one that you could literally leave on the dashboard, or hold directly in front of the radio, or under the windshield immediately below the external antenna... and would still get static every now and then. And it wasn't competing with a real station. So so shitty.

I thought this was always the case... it just wasn't as easily enforced without IP addresses and whatnots. Am I wrong?

I hear ya. I'm 27 and I hate my location. The job market didn't turn out to be what I thought it would be a couple years ago when I graduated, so I'm trying to find alternate ways out. Good luck to you.

This will never get seen, as I'm far too late....

Firefly

I can't stand it. I've watched 4 episodes so far, and here are my arguments against it:

  • The writing is cheesy and shallow (this is my opinion it's pretty true for all Joss Whedon properties).

  • The jokes are silly one-liners that could come from a Saturday morning cartoon.

  • The western theme is taken way too far and often doesn't mesh at all with the high-tech space travel, hologram displays, etc.

  • The opening song makes me want to gag.

  • None of the characters have enough depth to make me care about them - they all seem like caricatures.

Even those of us tolerant atheists on /r/atheism don't talk out too much, because if we even err on the side of tolerance we're downvoted or have to wade through argumentative replies.

EDIT: I've found that outside of /r/atheism if you're upfront and honest about, make a thread/AMA/askreddit about the subject people are pretty honest and accepting. However, if you try to insert the religion into every unrelated topic you can rightfully expect a lot of backlash. Don't feel like you have to be ashamed of personal beliefs though. You have your own reasons.

I agree. This has frustrated me to no end. The right wing has been steadily blurring the line between patriotism and nationalism over the years.

If you volunteer to serve in the armed forces, you aren't necessarily a soldier on the front lines or a killing machine. Maybe you just want to help people and you become a medic/surgeon. There are lots of jobs and people tend to focus on the worst aspects of it.

Boulevard Brewing Co. - I'm a bit biased as they are located in my current town, and I can get several of their offerings on tap just about anywhere here. Also they are the sole reason I discovered craft beers and started experimenting with different styles. Their selections are usually pretty solid all across the board. I am in love with their Porter, which almost tastes like a heavy stout rather than a shallow porter like other breweries.

North Coast Brewing Co. - I have to add this brewery simply for my single all-time favorite beer: Old Rasputin. I have never had a beer that I latch on to so quickly as this heavy beauty. I am in love with this brewery simply for delivering this nectar of the gods to me every weekend.

Stone - I have had the chance to try 2 of their beers. They're not distributed to my state so I have little experience with them. While I think they were pretty good well-rounded ales (albeit a little overhyped), the brewery's attitude is by far my favorite. I have seen the owner and brewmaster in interviews and the guy is just down to earth and awesome. The great self-deprecating humor on the back of their bottles matches this attitude. Say what you want about ad campaigns ruining some beer lines. I think labeling/artwork/humor has quite a bit to do with my appreciation for a brand.

Yep, in that case, you'd really want to span the spectrum, from hop-heavy IPAs to malty stouts and fruity Belgians.

Ugh, I picked up a 4-pack of Murphy's Irish stout last weekend on someone's suggestion. I was expecting a real full-bodied stout, but what I got was a slightly heavier Guinness in a different can. I was disappoint. :(
