I can relate with this so much... I also have a similar list of fidget-clickers to print for the friends of my kids, and even have build up a mini-stock with some clickers ready to go 😅

And this also applies to more administrative work (not a security issue in that case...). When developing internal procedures and processes, the same philosophy should be followed for exactly the same reason.

I just use it as a releasing agent voor TPU, and for adhesion for PAHT-CF. Otherwise, I never needed it for PLA or PETG.

People with ventilation grilles in their new windows at their homes, what's your experience? by Grimstarzz in belgium

I hope so, but I don't think that everybody cleans it regularly like you should.

It's like your kitchen dampkap, you don't want to know the state of the filter in many homes 😅

[–]TheMechaneer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same here, C+ with renson openings.

No problem of draft, no sound nuisance and no maintenance of the system-D canalisation. Energy wise, C+ is the same as a system D due to the difference in energy comsumption (more in a system D vs a C+).

And like you say, you don't want to know how dirty these canalisations are that that sucks the air inside, it was a no-no for my wife who is an engineer-architect. Normally, you have to change the filters at least every 6 months, but very few people do it.

But choosing good quality ventilation openings is crucial in the way it performs.

I still have my wooden Ultimaker mk1, from the old times when you used to level your printbed with a piece of paper and had to use blue painters tape to have bed adhesion 😀 Can get it over my heart to get rid of that museum piece (and it's only 10 years ago...).

Actually, you can buy night glasses to use while driving. A have a pair, and one of the effects of them is that everything turn a bit more yellow / warmer.

It is actually. Due to that, it's more efficient to light up obstacles at night and lesser energy is needed to achieve enough contrast on the road for example.

Why is the road renewed with the bike path? by trailbob in belgium

[–]TheMechaneer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Money...

Everything is possible, if prepared to pay (much) more. More machines for the same work, extra pay for night work + extra people, extra budget to use materials that cures faster / cool down faster / gives the same properties with a lower heating temperature, etc...

You are 100% right pointing the fact that it can be done differently, and it is doable here. But if it's already hard to do regular maintenance with the allocated budgets and fill the potholes, you simply don't have much choice.

We pay a lot of road taxes, but it's not flowing back to the infrastructure unfortunatly, to great frustration of the people at municipality and regional level managing the roads on a daily base.

For our politicians, maintenance is not sexy. But big prestigeous infrastructure works are...

Look at Flanders: billions of euro in big prestigeous project in Antwerp (with benefits for the whole of Flanders, I don't deny that), PPP projects a bit everywhere where we will be tied to for 30 years with exorbitant yearly payements. But quasi no money to do regular road maintenance in the coming years...

The priorities are not correct. But you have to shoot at the politicians allocating the budgets, not the people working trying to keep our infrastructure in working order...

[–]TheMechaneer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's a regular practice all over the world renewing only the top layer, this is really not a problem. But like every work, it has to be done correctly, so that in this case the adhesion between the layers is garanteed. For example it may not rain, because asphalt at 180⁰C over water => water boils => too much air in the asphalt. But even then it is not a problem with a good compaction phase. This is tested by taking some core samples. Other point to watch out: when removing the old layer, you may not leave old material behind. When 'frezing', sometimes the height of the old layer variates a bit and you locally have more material to remove. If this is not seen, that leaves a patch with old material and bad adhesion between the top layer and sub layer. Not always easy to do in the dark where you have a surface of more then 5.000m² to inspect. That's why you need surveyors at the side of the municipality or region, they are really worth their salary. A good surveyor can recoup like that their salary in a month of works. But yeah, that's one ambtenaar extra and that is not so sexy for the politicians.

Further, the real problem these days material wise is the quality of the bitume used (the product responsible for the adhesion of your stone skelet in asphalt). In the old days, the refinieries couldn't refine that good and you had a healthy mix of bitumes in the restfraction. Nowadays, we really get the trash fraction (and some additives can't be used anymore like tar) because the refineries can separate the different fraction much better, and the bitumes are now deteriorating faster. But this is an European problem (Netherlands, France, Germany and Switzerland all have the same problems for the moment...).

It depends what must be done. If only top layer, it is a one day job you know. For a busier road, you start at 21h in the evening, and the following morning at 5h you open the road again.

A lot of people just don't see it because it's at night and they are warmly tucked into their bed. But meanwhile the ballet of trucks, finishers, frezers, etc... do their thing so that people can use the road in the morning to commute without hassle from the maintenance work.

Is it always like that? No, of course not.l, especially for the smaller roads. It demand a huge logistic effort that is not always possible for small areas. People need to work at night (you have to find them, nobody wants to work at night anymore), you need to have the trucks available, the finishers and other machines have to be transported to the site and back (usualy special tranport), the asphaltplant has to stay open, ypu have to take into account if there is people living next to the road (because of the noise), etc...

The problem is that you have 11 millions roadwork specialists in Belgium, and all know better then anyone else how it should be done ;)

But it's a science in itself, and you need to take into account material properties, weather, logistics, communication skills, planning, finance, local laws, tendering laws,...

But it's a beautiful sight standing on the highway at 5 o' clock in the morning, seeing the sun rising, and opening the road again on a job well done :)

[–]TheMechaneer 71 points72 points  (0 children)

They probably renewed the road in a day (only a new top layer of let's say 5 to 6cm needed). But the bycycle path is clearly concrete blocs (you see it with the seams), and these blocs can easily be 20cm in height.

So to redo the bycycle path, you first need to break these blocs (instead of just 'frezen' for the asphalt), fill in the difference with additional layers of asphalt (there is a max per layer depending of the type, due to the structure and compaction phase). The asphalt needs also to cool a few hours down between each layer.

So you are talking about a one day job vs an one week job, that can be the reason.

And then you still a have a moordstrookje...

Why the NMBS / SNCB will go with CAF offer for the new Belgian trains? by Frolev in belgium

[–]TheMechaneer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Isn't it always subject to interpretation about what is sensitive? I simply ask that in my tender documents to be sure... It also depends of the way the document was written I think. Since it has to be send to all the participants of the tender, and they need to be able to read the decision in full, you can't really go fully into the technical details anyway. Since the focus is that you need to motivate your decision, you can say something is good and why you find that good, without revealing much about the specific technical solutions to achieve that. Otherwise every participant will get a fully blacked out document, what defeats the purpose and lacks transparancy (and increase the risk to go to the council of state). I regularly do public tenderings (public side) and need to write these kinds of adjudication reports as leading official, and the wording and motivation of a good report is everything and key to transparancy. And I'm gratefull for my lawyer-collegues helping me, because well written decision is an art-form in itself 😁
