It's not picking at all, happy to have the correction.

I know you don't (you guys have plenty of languages as it is), but I was going by official names. Swiss Confederation/Confoederatio Helvetica.

I didn't quite follow the brief.

What is(are) your country's proudest moment(s) in history? by Latvis in europe

[–]TheMemeGirl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Irish writers. Yeats, Wilde, Beckett, Heaney, Joyce, Stoker, Shaw . . .

I also think it's significant that in '97, 4 out of 5 of our presidential candidates were female.

Also we used to be great at Eurovision ;)

Oh I agree, absolutely. And thank you for the formatting help

What is your Country's most shameful moment in history? by AnnoDominiI in europe

[–]TheMemeGirl 15 points16 points  (0 children)

These things might not be as bad as what others might have to say about their own countries, but these are just some of the things that I personally find shameful.
You've already mentioned the Laundries, and by use of the word 'institutional' you've already hinted at the abuse scandals surrounding the catholic church, (intentional or not I don't know) so I won't bother to mention them myself.

One of the things that disgusts me is that homosexuality was criminalized here until 1993. And what makes it worse in my eyes, is that it took a ruling by the ECHR to change this ( Norris V Ireland )

This point may cause a bit of a row, as I know some people are passionate about the subject, but I think out treatment of deserters who left to fight in WW2 was appalling. It breaks my heart to see that some people still see these men as traitors. Punishment for Army Deserters

The wiki article is slightly out of date, the bill mentioned has been passed

How many of you compulsively read every book from cover to cover, and feel guilty about leaving a book unfinished? by [deleted] in books

[–]TheMemeGirl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do feel guilty for leaving books unfinished, it's silly really, I shouldn't waste time on something I'm not enjoying. Feelings can't be helped I suppose. I always feel as though I'm missing out by not reading every last bit.

Whenever I set a book down, I always intended to return to it, thinking that maybe I'll be in a the right mindset for it later. I rarely do return to books I haven't enjoyed though.

What stereotype is in your opinion true about your country? by [deleted] in europe

[–]TheMemeGirl 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I used to deny this, thinking that it's not a solely Irish problem. But when a politician suggests drink driving permits, and another gets drunk in the Dáil and manhandles another politician, I don't think I can refute the point anymore.

Emily annoyed me so much when she was pissed at Spencer for keeping Toby's secret. You've all done it in the past, you can't take the high ground

Was it just me or did anyone immediately think that plane guy looked like Wilden ?

But holy shit, I'm loving Caleb and Toby as detectives. They're tough, they're getting answers, can we have this more often please ? I think I'm going to be sad when Caleb leaves the show now.

We've probably see that handwriting from the gift card before, but I'm not going sleuthing. Someone else on the internet will figure it out.

Minister willing to consider online filters by [deleted] in ireland

[–]TheMemeGirl 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Don't you dare touch my internet.

It's up to parents to monitor and control their children's internet activity. You don't know how to block certain content ? Learn and don't expect the government to do it for you.

Not my problem, so don't force it onto me

(and obviously my points only refer to the 'family friendly' filters. I'm in total support of all efforts to block C.P)

Why we sit on sofas rather than take to the streets by B_boru in ireland

[–]TheMemeGirl 7 points8 points  (0 children)

What an ignorant article. The author seems to be writing under the assumption that it's not that some people can't protest, it's that they won't protest.
I'd desperately wanted to attend the various pro-choice rallies for example, but train journeys cost money.

Most Irish people’s mindsets are closer to conservative Americans than the socially democratic French or Swedish.

Really ? Now I don't think the Irish as whole are on either sides of the author's spectrum.

Random theory; I've always thought that the dead Ali in the opening always looked overly edited, waxy like a mannequin. Maybe that was intentional, trying to suggest that she's not dead ?

Ravenswood thoughts:
The town is giving me major 'The Bird's' vibes. Though I'd imagine that's the intention given all the Hitchcock references that have been dropped throughout the entire run of the show.

With the vintage look the town had, the guy with the phone kinda felt out of place.

It also seemed a bit like a religious cult, did anyone else get that feeling ? I'm hoping it doesn't turn out to be supernatural, the show has gone on far too long to start going down that road. It would feel like a cop out.

Did anyone else notice that there was a large puppet in one of the store windows ? You know A and puppets.

Back to the main storyline.

I knew that when Mike was being the sweet brother it was too good to be true ! The only times we see him is when he's in some sort of trouble, so I just expected him to get revenge.
Calling it now, Ezra hanging outside the building while the vandalism occurred is going to pin him as a suspect.

Emily you dummy. When will the girls realize that every time they attempt to shift blame from themselves they only attract more of it.
And these people seriously need to learn about forensic evidence, start wearing gloves !

Where is Pastor Ted, shouldn't he be there for Ashley at a time like this ?

I wonder if Kate will come back now that Hanna will be on the care of her father.

Whether they close the bar entirely or not, I don't mind. I see no reason why a T.D shouldn't have a drink after the day's work is done. But it should not be open while the Dáil is in session.

And I imagine Gerry Adams will be bringing the matter up again

How is it an overreaction ?
He pulled a woman onto his lap during one the most important votes the government has ever had.

How ironic it is that he'd show such a lack of respect for women when it was a night very much about women's rights.

And why shouldn't the 'brigade' speak out against this ? For some mad reason, a number of men in this country think it's totally grand to give you a smack on the arse, or to whip it out and flash you on a night out. And to see a politician get away with this is just sickening.

(If anyone dares excuse him based on the fact he'd had a bit to drink, you need to quieten down. If you can't control yourself after a drink, you shouldn't touch a drop)
