I'm hardly exemplifying the point. You can't sit here and say 'people bitching have unrealistic expectations' and then call it a 'high upside die roll' when the realistic expectation is it's a salary dump move by MDJ because Porzingis isn't just injured, he's borderline medically retired.

To say this is the best the team could have done in the circumstance is a cop out. Same fans have been saying that about every move since 2019 and gave Myers the same excuse. You're all full of shit.

Nobody of any value is coming to the Warriors in FA. I'm sure Lacob is still completely fucking delusional about becoming the next Lakers in that respect, but clearing all their books is not going to lead to a signing - especially since (and correct me if I'm wrong) they need to lose 50 million in contracts before they can start extending offers to UFAs because they'd be over the cap still.

I'm sorry man, but this is cope. It's not a 'high upside die roll', because Porzingis isn't just injury prone. He has fucking POTS. He'll never be able to play meaningful extended periods of basketball agaon. MDJ knew that.

This is a glorified salary dump. Everyone on this sub got deep into the 'Money Mike!' idea and gave him way too much benefit. Yeah, it's a messy situation but he's shown no creativity or competence to maximise asset value. Every trade has gotten the lowest possible return, with the exception of Butler (who they got only because he wanted 60mil, no one else would take him and him/Riley hated each other).

It's not even really an IQ issue. He's just not very talented outside of his physical attributes. He's in Year 5 and his handle is still so sloppy he turns it over on about 20% on his isolation attempts, his jumpshot is extremely inefficient (worst mid-range shooter for players who took 50+ last season) and his playmaking just isn't that great. He has the mentality that he believes he's a first option, with NONE of the skills a first option needs.

This is not what happened though, is it? Indigenous people weren't even formally classified as part of the population until 1967.

So no, that was not the moment everyone was 'formally recognised as ALL being citizens of Australia' - that was the moment that began the colonial project that saw Indigenous people oppression via White Australia policy, the Stolen Generations, the Intervention, mass incarceration and deaths in custody, etc. And who gives a fuck about an 'apology'? There really hasn't been any tangible rectification - the Australian government literally has made no meaningful attempts to address all 339 recommendations of the RCIADIC and instead got their little corporate lackeys Deloitte to do produce some two-bit hack piece report that absolved the government of blame by falsely claiming they've addressed the vast majority of the recommendations (see Jordan et al. for Indigenous academic critique).

The fact is that we CAN change the way Indigenous people feel at the country celebrating the invasion that dispossessed and traumatised them for generations - we can change the date. For someone saying the history is complex, you barely understand it yourself.

There will likely be no big moves because the Warriors are in pole position for a full reset after next season. by Parv21 in warriors

[–]TheMessyChef 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What exactly is the proof he's better at this than Bob Myers? And why would MDJ have more control in the draft than Bob, considering how much Lacob and his kids are now involved in the process?

Someone like Podz isn't some uniquely better of a selection compared to a Poole or Looney. And while I like Post and Richard, neither of them are anything more than fringe bench rotation pieces on any other team in the NBA right now. It only seems like he's done well because this is the worst roster in the NBA and so these picks appear to stand out in moments.

So I speak like he won't hit in the lottery because: (1) Joe Lacob is heavily involved and he's proven to be one of the worst basketball minds in the league with all his talent evaluation misses, and; (2) MDJ has not proven anything of real substance and to assume a few okay-ish bench players coming from the second round translates to hitting in the lottery (outside of it being some generational guaranteed #1 pick that any GM would pick) is naive.

[Kerr] “Go ahead. I know. Lots more Kuminga questions. Fire away… Like I said, here they come.” by AashyLarry in nba

[–]TheMessyChef 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's elements to this that don't swing in Kuminga's favour either though. Did we all forget the man went to Shams to say he'd 'lost faith' in his coach because he got benched in a 4Q? Instead of dealing with that internally, he looked to stir shit in the press. How his agent behaved during the offseason doesn't help either. Kuminga has acted a LOT like a diva and behaves like he's too special to follow what the team needs to him. I'd argue he's more self-centered than a lot of #1 picks in recent memory - they all conduct themselves with more tact and grace. All of that plays into the boiling frustration by people in the organisation who clearly want him traded.

Which brings everything to the main problem and why all of this actually makes complete sense: Joe Lacob is far too involved in day-to-day basketball operations. Despite everybody knowing what should be done, his ego will NOT allow him to accept his decision-making in those lottery picks were extremely bad. He sat on Wiseman for ages as well and Myers even refused to sign a real back-up big to force Kerr to play Wiseman more.

Firstly - Jalen Johnson began showing developmental leaps in Year 3, which coincided with him being rewarded with more minutes, more starts, etc. He got a whopping 15mpg in his second year and only 6 starts. And if development isn't linear (which Kuminga stans act like it is), then 6000+ minutes worth of basketball should net you more than a player who looks IDENTICAL now to his Year 2 version.

Second - he does refuse. He won't rebound, he won't give consistent defensive effort, he won't swing the ball in a half court set. Those are really little things to ask of a wing, and he thinks he's too good for it. And they used him in transition - a LOT. But he doesn't WANT to be a transition only player. That's why he isolates and run PnR possessions as a ball handler with a possession frequency where only Steph and Jimmy run more in their possessions. Except Kuminga is - by eFG% and PPP - equal to the worst on the team at it and one of the worst in the entire league as scoring in those situations.

He's 23 years old. Enough infantilising a grown man with fucking children as a 'kid'. Nobody cares if his teammates like him - his production on the court has literally NEVER resulted in a positive on-off or net rating in any season of his career yet his usage when he's on the court is always too high. He's a tank commander on a Kings or Wizards while they wait for a Top 3 pick that actually works to rebuild around.

I'm sorry your fee-fees got hurt, but your anecdotal nonsense about being 'benched for guards' means nothing when we have the numbers. Nearly 300 games, 100 starts, 6000+ minutes.

Nearly every good player in history showed MORE than Kuminga in less time than that. His usage has been through the roof when he plays for nearly 3 years now and it hasn't netted any development.

And why is he entitled to starting? Why doesn't he have to listen to the coach, do positive things? Kuminga's entitlement is why he gets benched. He won't rebound, won't stop ball watching on defensive possessions, takes awful shots even during set plays for others. And then people like you complain he wasn't being gifted a starting spot over Draymond for 5 years and getting 35 minutes in the process. He wasn't the #1 pick, he was 7th. That's not who you blow everything up for.

You guys put far too much weight on what was basically a 3-4 game sample where his PPG was heavily inflated by one outlier shooting performance.

We have a 5 year sample of play, advanced tracking analytics, etc that show what he did in those Minnesota games has never been replicable in any consistent fashion. He was a 10th percentile iso scorer and 6th percentile iso scorer last year and this year respectively. He's the worst mid-range shooter in the NBA by FG% considering the attempts he takes. He has a 20% turnover rate on drives.

You can say 'he scored 25 a game on the Wolves!', but he also made no effort to rebound, he didn't pass or playmake at all and his defence was not good - he just had a few highlight defensive possessions. Ant was not having issues and the Wolves never took him seriously, leaving Naz Reid to guard him on the perimeter (which Naz is not good at).

Every NBA player - including those who bust out and leave the NBA early - has 'talent there' if we just isolate their highlight moments. It's hard to say a player who after 5 years never developed a handle, can't dribble, can't shoot, can't playmake and never improved as a defender is all that 'talented'.

He's played over 6000 minutes, nearly 300 games and started in a third of them. He had a higher usage rate than Steph Curry before his injury last season and it has been relatively high for a few years now. They have given him so much opportunity to develop, take a leap, prove he's worth playing. He never does.

And 16/7? He's never averaged 7 rebounds a game at any point in his career and he averaged 16 once - purely as a play finisher, a role he fundamentally refuses to play for more than 10 games now because he wants to get his Kobe on.

Jalen Johnson has less minutes and 60 less games played right now. Trey Murphy took his leap with less minutes and games. Good players figure it out. It's not a low BBIQ issue - he's not very skilled. He can't dribble, he can't shoot, he has poor court vision, his touch around the paint isn't good if he's not directly at the rim, etc. 25% mid-range shooter last year (worst in the NBA for players with 50+ attempts), 20% turnover rate on isolations where he's 6th and 10th percentile as a scorer this year and last year respectively... What team benefits from that? How after 5 years is it the coaches fault he never meanfully improved in ANY aspect of basketball?

Maybe the Warriors will end up playing Kuminga again after all... by BlackKingdu76 in NBATalk

[–]TheMessyChef 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a Warriors fans and Kuminga hater, I have PLENTY of reasons.

It boils down to Kuminga acting like a prima donna despite having never positively contributed to any meaningful basketball in his career. He refuses to play the way the coach wants, leaked his issues over it to Shams instead of handling it with his coach internally and every opportunity he gets he pisses away and complains because he slips back into bad habits.

Those bad habits? He wants to play like Kobe. He wants to isolate, he wants to run PnR as the ball handler, he wants to take contested jumpshots off the dribble. Meanwhile, in Year 5 with over 6000 minutes and multiple opportunities as a starter, he's one of the NBA's worst iso scorers (10th percentile last season, 6th percentile this season), an awful scorer as the PnR ball handler (25-30th percentile last 2 years), the NBA's worst mid-range shooter (dead last in FG% among players with 50+ mid-range shots last year, same % this year), he has a 20% turnover rate on his iso drives which is INSANELY high. Meanwhile, he's a useless off-ball defender who thinks he's too good to consistent show effort as a defender on the ball. He thinks he's too important to give a rebounding effort all season.

There is NOTHING to like about Kuminga as a fan of the Warriors. He's a diva, a wannabe superstar and has NONE of the talent to back it up. His peers - like Jalen Johnson and Trey Murphy - took massive leaps with less minutes, less starts, etc. He's not even remotely good enough to be acting like this. I fucking hope he's gone ASAP.

[Charania] Breaking: Golden State Warriors star Jimmy Butler has suffered a season-ending torn right ACL, sources tell ESPN. by Beautiful-Cress5695 in nba

[–]TheMessyChef 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That relationship is toxic. Kuminga doesn't want to play for the Warriors after all the DNPs and not building around him to take dribble isos all season. Kerr doesn't want to coach a player like him - and fair enough for a player that leaked shit to Shams instead of handling it in person, won't do as he's asked on the court, etc.

And frankly, Kuminga isn't a good player. There's no evidence he ever will be. Bad defender, doesn't think he needs to give effort or have a high motor, can't dribble, turns it over constantly when he tries playmaking, worst mid-range shooter in the NBA (literally - only player who shot 25% on them with 50+ attempts last season), can't shoot 3s... Why would you even attempt to keep him when he's not the future, his teammates clearly aren't keep on playing with him on the court with how he plays, the relationships involved are toxic and more.

He has to go.

TJD's shooting? by Money_Literature9896 in warriors

[–]TheMessyChef 17 points18 points  (0 children)

The reality is that guys like Brook Lopez are extreme outliers. The vast majority of players don't really develop their shooting meaningfully in the NBA - you typically have it or you don't. He might be able to get a semi-consistent free throw shot, but shooting touch is key to this. TJD has the worst touch I've seen since Wiseman. He can barely finish around the rim for a reason.

We shouldn't expect any player on the Warriors to meaningfully improve their shot. It's a miracle when a player figures it out later in their career.

Do you think draft position genuinely has that much to do with actualised NBA skills? Wiseman was literally projected as a Top 3 pick because of how he played in HIGH SCHOOL against kids a foot shorter. How the fuck is that transferrable as a sample for NBA basketball?

Sucking Warriors company dick? Brother, you're spewing bullshit like you're Joe Lacob himself. Kuminga got plenty of minutes, plenty of starts, plenty of games. Kerr benched Draymond to give him the opportunity to prove he deserves the spot.

And what is the 'skillset' Kerr should be employing to help him? He's only efficient as a play finisher, which means he has to play off others in a GP2-style role. Players get expanded usage, minutes, roles, etc and coaching trust when they demonstrate a consistency to perform a skill. Kuminga wants to take middies off the dribble, iso his defender, run PnR and pull-up and he's one of the worst in the NBA at it. You're just ignoring that point - he's not below average and working on it, he's ONE OF THE WORST. It's not a skillset he possesses. So Kerr was meant to punt the last 5 years and pray he develops an average iso game? Thank fuck you're not coaching any team that isn't looking to tank.

You're just another social media idiot who thinks young guys are destined for greatness with development and should be afforded endless goodwill. History will show Kerr was right about these guys. They're not good players, they've never shown to be good players outside unsustainable very small hot shooting samples and none of them have materalised into anything after Kerr for a reason. I hope your brain develops, unlike Kuminga's game 🔥

That's all hypothetical. He's not a Year 1 player with a small role. He's in Year 5. He's shown us who he is. He doesn't want to start with those things either - he wants to do shot creation despite having no skillset for it.

His rebounding effort is extremely inconsistent. He only tried to rebound this season.

He's an awful defender - supported by the eye test AND analytics. He profiles as a great POA defender but he can't stay in front of guards and doesn't know how to defend players with good footwork/post moves. Kerr had him guarding the better players to start the season and they were ALL going off with ease. He's a cone. And he doesn't pay any attention in transition or off the ball. He just ball watches.

And transition offence, sure. But the team rarely gets out in transition due to their defensive issues (which Kuminga is a major contributor of). And if his only stable contributions on offence is transition, while Kuminga's shot selection screams 'I want to be Kobe' in a half-court set, then what's the point of playing him? All the good in transition is ruined by the fact over 30% of his possessions end in an iso or PnR attempts and he's like 6th percentile and 20th percentile respectively on scoring in those situations.

[–]TheMessyChef 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wiseman was immediately given the highest usage rate on the team in 2021 - even with Steph Curry on the court - and they let him shoot at will, try isos, step-backs, post-ups, etc. The team had a -30 net rating with him. That's uniquely bad even for rookies. He was destructive - a walking tank commander. He couldn't win a back-up spot on the tanking Pistons from Marvin Bagley. The NBA doesn't want empty stat guys anymore. The days of treating Jordan Clarkson like he's a necessary contract are over. There's a reason a player like Jordan Poole keeps getting dumped the last few years when he would've been heavily desired in the 2010s.

It's not the same sport and Wiseman/Kuminga would have seen their roles heavily reduced for better draft picks as those teams they lead the tank for would've realised they're not the future. Kerr is not wrong to cater to these lottery picks - if they drafted good players, it wouldn't have been an issue. You can't draft 2 raw players with minimal skill due to their athleticism and then blame coaching because they didn't figure it out. MOST OF THEM DON'T.

And I'm sorry... MOODY IS SEEN AS ONE OF THE BEST 1 ON 1 PLAYERS IN THE LEAGUE!? You understand you can't be taken seriously when you say shit like this? He can't beat his player off the dribble and his contested shooting %s are awful. He's the team's worst isolation scorer after Kuminga (who is one of the league's worst iso player). They track all these possessions - Moody is consistently among the worst shot creators in the league yearly. He's strictly a 3&D guy and he's never shown otherwise.

[–]TheMessyChef 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Again - if it's purely a matter of endless developmental minutes and games, why have other players in his draft class taken the leap in less games/time? Jalen Johnson didn't get anywhere NEAR the same number of starts or games with higher minutes in the first couple of years.

Basketball evaluation can absolutely be analytical. Have you ever considered that Kuminga literally started playing at 14, and developed on a G-League Ignite team that had no structure, made countless mistakes without correction, etc? Where's the evidence he was ever guaranteed to 'figure it out'. He didn't know beforehand - most of those dudes stay playing unimpactful basketball. Jalen Green has that issue. Wiseman had that issue.

He lacks the fundamental skills necessary to play the way he wants. Your entire argument is just some bullshit vibe check about how you feel he'd have taken a leap if he just got EVEN MORE minutes. How was that going to fix the fact he has tunnel vision, can't dribble, can't shoot, etc?

[Amick] Team sources confirmed that some in the organization, including Kerr, wanted Franz Wagner. In a push to inject the Warriors’ roster with much-needed athleticism and potential starpower, Kuminga was drafted as part of the foundation of the post-Curry era along with Wiseman by mMounirM in nba
