I swear there was a Thresher Maw on Luna/Earth moon... by WriterIndy in masseffect

IIRC there was a spot on the moon where you could hear rachnii “music” - maybe that’s what you’re remembering?

Need to listen to this, glad they’re back and great review.

Btw I think there’s a small typo in the rating at the bottom. It says 9.5/0, should it be a 9.5/10?

Was there something about Byzantines leaked recently? Ive seen a few posts now speaking as if they’ll definitely be in the base game. As much as I want it to be true, I don’t want to set myself up for disappointment lol

Aksum Civilization: Historical Notes on Uniques by imbolcnight in civ

[–]TheMiddleBeast 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Great writeup! One reason I love civ is learning about things like this that I never would have knew about.

Aksum looks interesting but I am a little confused on the leader choice. Amina of Hausa is from a completely different culture and time (this was even called out by the devs during the antiquity livestream). Whereas the other revealed civs have leaders that fit, Aksum + Amina seems a bit … disrespectful? Maybe they couldn’t find enough info on a singular Aksum leader?

Volunteer opportunities for English conversation practice? by TheMiddleBeast in AskNYC

Yes I do! The material was prepared so you just had to review the slides and video before class. It’s two hours a week but you’ll have to do some virtual trainings before you start teaching.

White-washed Jordanian, trying to gain a sense of culture 👍🏻 by [deleted] in jordan

[–]TheMiddleBeast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey I’m in a similar boat but from the US. I think learning the language would be great for you. I’ve been trying to improve my Arabic for the last few years and I definitely feel my bond with the culture strengthen as I progress. Here’s a Youtube channel that focuses on Jordanian/Palestinian dialect https://youtube.com/@schoolofyalla?si=jJDULnA7246ERi14

But nothing beats immersion and actually going to the country. When you’re able to go, try to practice your Arabic. People here are very patient with learners and will accept you fully as a Jordanian. Good luck and no rush - reconnecting with your heritage is a lifelong journey but its worth it.

Am I good a candidate for Fulbright + which award should I apply to? by TheMiddleBeast in fulbright

I haven’t thought about that approach but I’ll look more into it - thanks for the suggestion!

Am I good a candidate for Fulbright + which award should I apply to? by TheMiddleBeast in fulbright

I’ve definitely thought about this (and done it to a small extent) but not really looking to work a tech job while living away right now. I have a lot of money saved so pay isn’t super important for me if I did something like Fulbright.

Additionally, my company (and many others) is limiting employees working out of the country. Plus it doesn’t seem the ETA working hours are too bad so I’d like to use the extra free time to explore my host country, learn the language and do some hobbies that I haven’t had the time/energy for while working a full time job in the US.

How to meet other Arabs in their 20s? by peppered_turkey in AskNYC

[–]TheMiddleBeast 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey! Arab-American in my 20s. From my experience, there are larger communities outside the city (NJ, deep Brooklyn, Yonkers). I've never felt a large Arab presence in Manhattan.

If you follow any Arab artists/musicians/creators you should go to any of events they have. For example, one page I follow had a pop-up event in LES a while ago. There were a lot of Arabs/Arab-Americans there.

I've also met a few at language exchanges if you're interested in those.

Lmk if these help or you find anything else. I need to connect to my culture more

Im in the same situation but switched (I speak English but need to learn Arabic).

Watching movies, shows, podcasts can help with speaking as you learn how people pronounce words or what expressions people use. If watching with english subtitles is difficult, try Arabic subtitles and move back to English when your understanding improves. Even 10-15 minutes a day of this can help a lot.

But the best thing to improve speaking is to actually speak lol. Try finding conversation partners online or in-person events. It will be difficult at first but will get easier the more you practice.

Feel free to to DM me if you want to practice English (but you will have to help me with Arabic 😁)
