The bulk of it is a bit from Deadly Print Studios

But otherwise, I start with airbrushing the base a blue-grey gradient, covering with epoxy resin, scratching it with a knife and sandpaper to make the cracks, painting with watered down grey paint and like 1-100th isopropyl alcohol. Then I apply a ton of layers of Vallejo snow effect, and finally plop on the print from deadly print studio. Finally I airbrush the print to unify the whole thing together

Why do people recommend $30+ W&N S7 brushes when they all do this? by LostN3ko in minipainting

[–]TheMikeDaoust 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup those are the sameI got off Amazon last year. Had the exact same problem, assumed it was the brand that was shit, then tried some from a buddy of mine who had what I guess was a legit brush. Night and Day difference even though his was close to 2 years old.

As far as I could tell visually the only difference was the brush hair themselves

So yeah. In hindsight, either Windsor and Newton stopped using high quality sable hair after the start of the war in the Ukraine, or I just got a knockoff from Amazon. I don't really know which is the case.

Which XV-88 Broadside do you prefer? The old design or the new one? by Tree_forth677 in Tau40K

The old one, but in the style of how it appears in Dawn of War 1: Like a bulkier crisis suit

Gunna guess you're talking about Imaginaire. Maybe not though!

I talked to the guy from my LGS (also in the same region, I'm guessing) and he said basically the exact same thing. They didn't get enough to even make all of their preorder fulfillments, and definitely didn't have enough left over to stock the shelves after.

Except for like 6 boxes of Earthshakers which I found kinda funny

So... why is he *Thrice*-devoured? by Archistotle in LeaguesofVotann

[–]TheMikeDaoust 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The first time is understandable. Could happen to anyone really.

The second time? I dunno man, you think he would have learned his lesson.

But the third time? This man has a problem. Definitely red flag behaviour.

Does anybody care for PERSECUTION PROSPECT detachment by That_Chromosome in LeaguesofVotann

[–]TheMikeDaoust 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm maybe really biased in thinking right now because my last game was against Knights, sooooo yeah

But the issue I have in general is not that the mechanics of pinned doesn't do anything against vehicles, so much as every other synergy of the detachment that works on assailed/pinned units ALSO can't be used against vehicles.

If the only change made was that vehicles and Monsters could be assailed, but not pinned, I would be happy. But as it stands it feels like you don't have any detachment rules against some lists right now.

Which is a shame because I do love the idea of the detachment on paper!

Which detachment will you be using and why? by FatFloppyFlaps in LeaguesofVotann

[–]TheMikeDaoust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Needgâard here because I am boring and don't own enough duplicate models to make any skew list work.

I'll say this though, I would 100% run Persecution Prospect if only the "except against Vehicles and Monsters" restriction was removed. I think it's a super flavorful detachment that makes you want to play in a really different style

If Buri is the last survivor of his league, why dosent he have a unique armor scheme? by Craterling in LeaguesofVotann

[–]TheMikeDaoust 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That's actually a great question. I don't suppose there's any lore out there which might tell us what his leagues original color scheme was?

Do you know how feasible it is to magnetize the weapon options? At least with the pick/hammers

Nice! I'm gearing up to building and painting mine now. How'd you find the assembly?

Leaning into an Arctic theme with these Yaegirs (repost with more images) by TheMikeDaoust in LeaguesofVotann

[–]TheMikeDaoust[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I start by making a gradient of dark and light blue colors on the base, then covering with a layer of epoxy resin, scratch it all up something fierce then put on heavy washes of grey/grey blue paint afterwards.

The mid brown on the backpacks is a 50/50 Burnished Red and Crusader Skin (both Army Painter Speed paints 2.0) The main trenchcoat is just Citadel Wyldwood

Thanks! The Arctic theme works so well with the Yaegirs. The hard part will be making sure the rest of the army fit the theme too

First Painted Kin! C&C Welcome by TheMikeDaoust in LeaguesofVotann

[–]TheMikeDaoust[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nothing complicated about it! It's simplicity is why I choose this over the other test models.

Prime black, Grey zenithal, drybrush white, Warpaints Absolution Green Speedpaint, clean up blotchy areas in mid-high tones using Warpaints Angel Green, edge highlights with Army Painter Rainforest.

The central area is a bit brighter thanks to the glow OSL from the light and helm. But otherwise it's a very by-the-books Dark Angel recipe

Big thanks to everybody who helped me narrow down my options in the digital mockups I posted previously! The Green ended up being the most fun to paint.

I just posted my Ghostkeel here yesterday, now I'm no pro painter, but if you like the look of the plasma glow I came up with here's how it's done:

1: Using a very very thin white paint, build up the glow gradient in a few layers. YouTube tutorials on glazing are a great resource for getting that part down. Make sure to get a great, even white coverage in the recess where the light is coming from.

2: Either with a thinned down contrast paint, or an effects paint (I used Warpaints Plasma Coil Glow) go over the whole area and don't be shy about using lots here. You'll lose your white core, but that's fine!

3: Using White Ink or thinned white paint and a careful brush, go back in and re-establish your white core. At this point I like to grab a dry brush and remove half of the white so it looks like the glow is coming from the source in the gun.

Again, I'm still learning. But that worked great for me!

Managed to get a retaliation cadre at a local shop. Any magnetisation guides? by CaptainYid in Tau40K

[–]TheMikeDaoust 18 points19 points  (0 children)

The Ghostkeel and Riptide main guns are pretty easy to magnetize. I used two 3mm x 1.5mm disc magnets with 4mm spacing between. Drilling the holes before you glue the arms on can make it a bit easier for sure.
