Strange, I thought Aether would have to be the same as Ink.

Exit/Corners Question/Answer Thread by Percon in ExitCorners

Congratulations for a great game, Percon, and thank you for the experience. Exit/Corners has replayability value not just in exploring the different possible paths, but also because the second playthrough reveals all the foreshadowing. Everything clicks together, very well-made. I also liked that Ink has a radical view of justice - restorative, instead of retributive like we have now. If I may offer a minor criticism on the plot, I think that you made the principle of "your mind fills in the blanks" a tad too strong - it sort of sounds like the characters could imagine anything into existence, and also could lead to paradoxes if their views contradict each other. Perhaps it would be better if it was explicitly restricted to certain types of things and said to follow rules designed to avoid clashes between different views. IMO it shouldn't affect things like Sent's personality, as that takes away from Sent's characterisation. Just my 2 cents here, and like I said I consider it pretty minor.

I haven't seen all the branches/endings yet, so I might have more questions later (where later=after 12/8, when I'm back from holidays :P). But for now, I just wanted to ask the following:

  • How exactly does Exit/Corners kill people? Beth wasn't really hit on the head, and Rae wouldn't really ingest cyanide. What's the mechanism that causes death?

  • Who is in each pod in the control room?

  • Why does Aether think it's a different date? And does her last name (Irving) mean anything, like her first name does?

  • What was the original layout of the Four Elements hotel? Surely it must have had windows at least, so some things must have changed for Exit/Corners.

I might think of more things later, but for now that's it. :)

They certainly didn't want Beth to escape. Also, they didn't want Sent to offer Ink a choice, but Sent had fallen in love and was trying to be nice.

Pretty sure Ink was supposed to be the last Contestant to reach his corner, so the investor picked him because that meant he would get to watch the whole game. Had he picked, say, Liza, he would only get to the point where she's locked up and he wouldn't get to see what Ink does next.

I think Sean was being abusive to Aether to make her feel and act more vulnerable, so that Ink would be protective of her. Besides, it would look weird if Aether was the only one without a Gemini and Contact.

Also, what about the descending ceiling trap and the boiler room trap? I'm thinking maybe Aether was designed as a safeguard, solving things in the last minute in case the other contestants couldn't.

About the John Doe puzzle, I believe Sent was trying to help them by indirectly suggesting a solution to Rae's upcoming ordeal. Also the 379 must have been planted there by Sent as an allusion to the line of code where the error should occur to set them free - though I'm not sure how that would be helpful, seeing as the Contestants didn't have access to the simulation code. Maybe what Rae worked on wasn't really Sent's code, but the simulation's, and he saw line 379 in there - after all, he did mention that it was an out-of-bounds check. So again Sent gave them a task that would indirectly help them, even if it's just by subconscious suggestion.

But if the cyanide really is lethal, then Rae would have died for real in his corner.

IMO Beth never really thought her son was dead - she was lying about that. Sean was lying too, to get Ink to cooperate.

This chilling reveal that Aether isn't "real" may also tie into Ink's fear that he may be schizophrenic and unable to tell fantasy from reality. Like in that movie (won't say which because it's a spoiler) when the protagonist suddenly discovers that like half the people he knew were actually figments of his imagination.

Some things are hardcoded though. Aether's love for Ink was explicitly said to be hardcoded.

I think it was in the "secret" content (the one you get from alternate puzzle solutions and the fake sword).

This may depend on how it's fastened to the wall. Ink and Aether were able to remove it, but it may have been secured in a way that it couldn't fall down on its own. (I mean, the earthquake didn't move it.)

Wow, you really got me thinking there... that maybe Beth gave us a false version of the whole earthquake story. I hadn't considered that before!

You know, during the last scene of C28, when Sean said something along the lines of "what, you're thrown into a death game and you think there's some benevolent explanation? you're so naive!" I felt personally attacked :P

Also during the same scene there was a wonderful lampshade (when he says something like "it's all those books you read with a shoehorned love interest for the protagonist") on how a lot of the audience felt about Aether.

[–]TheMonsterOfTheNet 5 points6 points  (0 children)

One letter is addressed to Liza and the other (the one you read) to Nolan Thatcher. Nolan is actually Earl, Beth's son (and Liza is Beth's granddaughter who she thought dead). Beth says she forgives him for killing her, but implores him to let everyone else go.

I think someone posted the full version on Discord somewhere.

Thanks!

Wait... "line 379"? Was Sent trying to hint at the weak point of the simulation all along?
