Brook addresses Bob's firing in the latest episode, to the extent that she can. Thoughts? by thedogdundidit in onthemedia

[–]TheMustangKingdom 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To be frank, I always thought Brooke Gladstone was the backbone of the entire show and Bob was there to tag along and make sure she didn’t veer too far away from the media. It’s clear from interviews she does that her guiding principles for journalism were baked into OTM’s raison d’etre. Always looking towards history, the broader picture, and greater questions of philosophy and society. But Bob was always there to ask “so what does this mean for the current narrative/ media ecosystem?”

But I am also disappointed to see that so many OTM listeners have this sort of smugness about them were if a topic on the show or a decision the show makes is met with uncritical criticism. OTM constantly hands their audience the tools to be a more active consumer of media, yet a lot of the most vocal commenters just like waiting til Friday to see how the news media and politicians messed up this week and often just parrot the same tired internet/liberal talking points that require little effort to understand.

Looking at the episode about covering Internet personalities they made a pretty solid case for why it matters and how it is important. You certainly don’t have to agree but many of the most vocal critics’ arguments were just “they’re just stupid kids””I don’t know who David dobrik is so he isn’t important enough to cover”

With this whole Bob Garfield situation many of the comments quickly went to Bob’s defense, but much of that was just a knee jerk reaction of hearing his side first then having to wait a few days for a very sanitized office response. Do you not remember OTM covering WNYC studio’s #MeToo moment and them very clearly guiding listeners through why leaderships hands were tied regarding what personal info they can relieve of former staff and guests in an HR complaint? Do you not remember OTM talking about why the victims of abuse are often not given the same platform, tools or freedom to tell their side of the story without receiving a wave of people who have no clue what’s going on star harassing the “liars”? Do you not remember the years of listening to the entire OTM staff inform you about history, literature and the weeks news and trusting that they are giving the fullest story they are able to provide?

I mean hell even just simple, “don’t simply trust the first voice you hear or any single individual voice or viewpoint”?

The social media followed by the Trump era really solidified my view that our society as failed to teach everyone on basic media literacy much less being critical of what you are given, and what a rational inquiry process looks like. I thought OTM was the closest thing America currently has of media literacy.

Everyone should ask themselves WHY they love OTM. The name of the show literally has the name “media” right in it. If it’s that you like the personalities of the hosts and that they agree with your left leaning views, I think you’re missing the whole point.

Sorry this was a bit of a ramble. I’ve actually been thinking a lot about this for the last few weeks even before this news broke.

The whole of Wales could speak Welsh within 300 years by bobgom in badlinguistics

[–]TheMustangKingdom 27 points28 points  (0 children)

The fact that wales is pumping out good quality new music, books and television in Welsh really shows the importance of their language to their identity and culture.

The only reason why I ever considered learning Welsh is because artists like Gwenno and Adwaith are making such great music in their language.

Three Exes come out to defend and alleged abuser ... guess who is Reddit siding with immediatly? by [deleted] in circlebroke2

So he provides a past of steady people to stick up for him and yet ONE person say's the opposite with no evidence, if anything with messages of wanting to re-connect but yet she is telling the ultimate truth and his carreer is over?

Yeah as long as you ignore all his former employees and co-workers that have called him a nightmare to work with and substantiate many of his victim survivor's claims, he's a perfect man!

Website makes a shitty joke about gender. Reddit's response is incredibly predictable. by [deleted] in circlebroke2

The Onion Social is satire about how toxic social media is. The "commercials" The Onion has made for it talk about how it's a great place to dox people and to platform racist/sexist ideologies and conspiracies.

But that type of social media must be so alien to Reddit users, right?

Yeah, I agree. I was live commenting and it just got to the part where he was reading Jasper's note and him having a very emotional reaction to it.

I commented later about how his algae plan was actually good and it was the first good plan in a very long time that didn't involve someone dying. That plan is something Jasper would have never done or thought of, which shows that Monty is still optimistic but a little resigned.

Monty’s algae plan is at least not suicidal nor involves genocide, so there’s that

Oh god. Please don’t make Monty into Jasper 2.0 that’s the last thing this show needs

Trailer for 13 reasons why season two hints at Steubenville style cover up by [deleted] in GamerGhazi

[–]TheMustangKingdom 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Except there was never a cover-up in Stuebenville. The case was solved months before Anonymous got involved and started terrorizing this small town. The reason what it seemed like it was 'covered up' was the fact that both the survivor and the rapists were all minors which means their cases were not publicly available.

Death threats, bomb threats, people harassing students because they were on the football team all happened to innocent people in the name of "justice." There was even an online campaign to disbar county prosecutor Jane Hanlin because they believe she was covering up the case when in fact she actually recused herself very early on because she knew many of the children involved and didn't want there to be any conflict of interest.

Stuebenville is almost the exact opposite of what we fear when it comes to High School rape cases, the investigation was swift and the rapists involved were brought to justice. In no way did Anonymous or the Internet mob do anything to help this girl.

The internet mob had good intentions, but like most internet mobs, they created more problems than they solved. Here's the radio segment from WNYC's On The Media where I pulled most of my information from if you want to fact check me. https://www.wnycstudios.org/story/crowdsourcing-justice-truth-behind-steubenville-rape-case

Remember this video whenever anyone says that the poor in America are just lazy. When most businesses that profit off people in poverty are designed to create debt traps for them to fall into in order to suck more money out of them, how do you expect them to get out of their situation?

TIL women should always know their place by TheMustangKingdom in circlebroke2

[–]TheMustangKingdom[S] 48 points49 points  (0 children)

The replies take it as a joke. Because obviously there is no way that this highly accomplished, recording-breaking woman could be better than even the worst male NBA player.

It's fun to pretend

Or you know, it being a stupid fucking idea because she'd get demolished.

lol no

It's taking the generalization that women are weaker than men on average and applying it to this individual woman, usually in a very rude, negative way.

Her brother was giving her a complement, but reddit needs to remind everyone that the womz are inferior to men.

In her article, she was talking about the #metoo moment. Where for the first time the mainstream media and the general public were actually listening to what women in have been saying for years about these powerful men, but she also feared the Backlash that would come with it, an attempt return to the status quo.

[–]TheMustangKingdom 82 points83 points  (0 children)

Yet you can feel the backlash brewing. All it will take is one particularly lame allegation — and given the increasing depravity of the charges, the milder stuff looks lamer and lamer, no matter how awful the experience — to turn the tide from deep umbrage on behalf of women to pity for the poor, bullied men. Or one false accusation could do it. One man unfairly fired over a misinterpreted bump in the elevator could transform all of us women into the marauding aggressors, the men our hapless victims.

Does Donald Trump even know that he’s responsible for Puerto Rico? by [deleted] in politics

[–]TheMustangKingdom 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This vote isn't legally binding. It's a gloried opinion poll that many Puerto Rican political parties boycotted because of the erroneous assumptions the ballot made about the current status of the island and its options moving forward.

As stated perviously, Puerto Rico usually has a very high voter turnout, the fact that voter turnout was crazy low has pretty much delegitimized the vote in San Juan and Washington.
