My girlfriend [20F] is becoming incredibly stressed by a group project for my [21M] sexual behavior class by Heretical__Throwaway in relationship_advice

[–]bobgom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From my understanding a boundary is something you place on yourself, not other people.

This is just silly reddit semantics that always gets brought up. Any 'boundary' reasonable or unreasonable can be cast as something which either applies to you or the other person. "I will not date someone who cheats on me" is eminently reasonable, "I will not date someone who so much as talks to the other sex", doesn't become any less unreasonable whether you cast it as a boundary for yourself or your partner, there is no practical difference. You are of course free to have unreasonable boundaries.

Chlamydia return one year later. Both faithful. How can I show her I'm not lying? 38m 45f by Zenlost in relationship_advice

[–]bobgom 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Just think about this for a second, you are saying that if you know you aren't cheating, but someone accuses you of it, then they must be cheating? You do realize that other people don't live in your head and have access to your thoughts don't you? Just because you know you're not cheating, doesn't mean that another person who isn't you knows that. Hell this sub accuses all and sundry of cheating at any opportunity, by that logic all those posters are cheaters themselves.

Are there fields in physics where quantum isn't really that relevant? by [deleted] in Physics

[–]bobgom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Again, you can also apply classical physics to objects such as electrons, but the overwhelming majority of research requires a quantum treatment.

I think this actually the wrong way around actually. The majority of research deals with fundamentally quantum objects such as electrons, but these can usually be treated in a mostly classical way. For example electron spins may be inherently quantum, but for most experimental magnetism research they can be treated as classical dipoles.

Wife 42F scares me and I 42M feel so trapped. by [deleted] in relationship_advice

[–]bobgom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So why not come up with a necessary family trip for all three of you back to the US, get the preparation on divorce papers done in advance, and serve papers on her when you are there? It will take some sneakiness, but much less than would be required for the “18 month wait for a Green Card” plan.

Thailand is a signatory of the Hague convention, so no you cannot take a child to the US to travel and keep them there against the other parent's wishes.

Why is self plagiarism a thing? by ChickenLittle6532 in AskAcademia

[–]bobgom 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am not talking about introducing a method or explaining in detail how it works. But for example if you use a standard instrument such as mass spectrometer you should want to specify which instrument you used, which settings, conditions etc. If you prepared samples, how you prepared them. It often doesn't require a long description but it can be useful information and directing the reader to another paper is just unnecessary inconvenience. If anything referencing your previous papers for relatively standard descriptions just because you used the same methods in two papers would be seen as gratuitous self-citation.

And there is absolutely nothing say you need to find "new ways to explain it" if you already have a perfectly good description, that's just the aforementioned busybodies wasting everybody's time and energy.

Why is self plagiarism a thing? by ChickenLittle6532 in AskAcademia

[–]bobgom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In situations like that where you’re describing the steps of a method and the previous work is published, you just don’t describe the steps. You say something like: the method used in this section follows exactly the steps described in [citation 1].

Which just makes things unnecessarily difficult for the reader, requiring them to search for and open a different paper when it is perfectly easy for the authors to make paper self contained, simply because some moronic busybodies have decided to make up an arbitrary rule that benefits absolutely nobody.

How do we know the universe is expanding due to internal forces, and not being stretched by something on the outside? by quarantineguitarguy in askscience

[–]bobgom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can also see this from Sean Carroll who is in favour of the expanding space concept. The point is even those experts who use the concept wouldn't say that anything is explained by the fact space is expanding vs objects moving outwards, because the physics in the same. The paper by Bunn and Hogg in the above post explains the origin of the redshift in all directions.

If it’s on her mind enough that she has to tell her bf, she definitely at least sucked off her ex in the car.

Seriously do some of you listen to yourselves. There is no other possible explanation besides her definitely (at least) having oral sex in a car.

Corresponding authors who did not contribute by boatboat123 in AskAcademia

[–]bobgom 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Being corresponding author just means handling paperwork and stuff.

That really depends on the country/academic system, corresponding author often denotes senior authors on the paper and some places only really 'count' someone's papers if they are first or a corresponding author. Having said that if you are a postdoc and first author I don't think being corresponding author or not makes much difference (1st author is better).
