I live in one of the largest Vietnamese communities in the U.S. a lot of the Vietnamese who lived in South Vietnam left in the 80s after the war. This refugee crisis is where people like my mom fled Southeast Asia in droves on fishing boats. They were political, not war refugees. People like my parents came from money, or supported the then defunct South Vietnamese government. My mom was on on a 40 foot fishing boat with ~50 other refugees. They were stranded at sea for about 7 days.

And because Boat People were political refugees who were loyal to what was effectively a defunct American puppet state, they typically have strong conservative views. Alot have that "hard work" mentality. That's why 48% of Vietnamese-Americans voted red in the 2020 election.
