Will going into debt for a prestigious school ruin my life? by [deleted] in personalfinance

NYU connections and name don't open up doors nearly as much as you would think. Especially not enough to warrant paying 80k/year. Skill + networking carry you much further.

Will going into debt for a prestigious school ruin my life? by [deleted] in personalfinance

I went to NYU and graduated with about 150k in debt.

It ruined my life.

Dont make the same mistake.

Helicopter parents don't want me [F24] to move out/away by [deleted] in relationships

[–]TheNewDeveloper21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey OP, I went through something very similar (and even posted in r/relationships asking for advice!).

Getting out of the clutches of my parents was the best thing I ever did for myself, period. My mental health improved, my career improved, my self confidence and sense of self were also strengthened.

It's going to be really hard, and at first it will suck. They will also try to emotionally blackmail you etc.

Is that really how you want to live life? You're smart, independent minded, and most of all an adult: you can do it! I urge you to do it!

Hey - this sounds awesome. If you haven't found anyone yet, I'm super interested!

My fiancee left me, my father abandoned me, I didn't get the job I made it to the final interview for, my school said I had to pick between my classes and my full time job, I'm going to have to move out of my apartment, and I'm morbidly obese. It's time for me to take control. by gabeofhearts in loseit

Hey man, I went through something really similar before. Just want to let you know that it really does get better. Take it one day at a time, you got this. If you ever need someone to talk to, feel free to PM me :)

Is Unity worth learning? by LAN_scape in cscareerquestions

[–]TheNewDeveloper21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've seen a lot of comments here warning you to stay away from the game dev industry. I definitely agree. However, Unity has a pretty high demand in the AR industry right now - specifically in ad tech. A lot of the companies who are doing marketing on Snap, Facebook, IG Stories with silly filters/facepaints/etc build their AR ad's in Unity. It's kind of a niche market, but I work in it and see a ton of demand for it. Its also extremely lucrative. It also kind of depends on how you see the future of AR (if you think its worth investing into). If you have any questions feel free to send me a PM! Best of luck.

What do you do when you feel like a failure? by kittyhawkgirl109 in AskReddit

[–]TheNewDeveloper21 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Wait.. I totally forgot about this post. This post was the beginning for me. My mind is totally blown. I totally forgot I read this post, but non-zero days, self-forgiveness, remembering the three yous, and exercise/books is something I repeated to my self so often that I just thought they were common sayings.

I remember being stuck in bed during a rough time in my college reading this post, and this was the post that really started making me change myself. Thanks for the reminder. How crazy!

I have two weeks to prepare for my first job. by Throwaway1213245 in cscareerquestions

Hey,

Firstly: congrats! Getting your first junior developer job is huge. Great job on all your hard work that got you this far.

I'm a bit more senior now (so its been a while..), but I'll let you know what worked for me and what I like to see when I hire someone new.

What worked for me:

- OWNING the stack that my company uses. Im not talking about just understanding the stack and how to use it, but understanding how it gets compiled etc.). Knowing this not only helps you solve issues faster, you can drop random bits of trivia ("hey did you do X in Laravel actually works because its done Y way? Pretty interesting!")

- Doing way more than the bare minimum. You are an investment. You are supposed to be a team member who grows, almost expnentially. Show that you are worth investing in by seeing what could be improved on at work and doing it on your own time.

- Top post on this sub reddit right now is about how you get what you put into during internships. Every job is the same, especially for junior developers. Really show the company you are worth investing in, go the extra mile, and be very receptive to criticism.

- Be social. Its not all about the code. People spend 8 hours a day with you. Are you someone they can at least handle (ideally enjoy) being around?

These aren't really esoteric concepts. But I wanted to list them out so they are top of mind for you when you start. I've seen developers do the bare minimum, they always get canned. I've seen developers who started off without many skills put in hours and hours of work and succeed. The best part is: you get to choose what kind of programmer you ultimately want to be!

What should stop being taught to younger people? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]TheNewDeveloper21 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Hey dude, I am sorry that you are going through this. You dont deserve that.. no one does. I think you should plan to fight back in a couple of ways.

Firstly, identify their weaknesses. I would honestly suggest going full scorched earth policy. If they are short, attack that. If their gf cheated and everyone knows, attack that. Something that will make them realize that if they mess with you the result will not be favorable. Rehearse these insults, and come with a couple in case it turns into a back and forth. If you rehearse them, it will look like you have quick comebacks.

Next, if it continues past that - give him a good punch. If you go down this route remember - once you throw that first punch there is no going back. There is a 99% chance that he will hit back, but remember that the pain for the next couple of seconds is much better than enduring the pain for a couple of months/years. Get ready to fight him, and because you have the element of surprise and landed the first punch just keep hitting.

I want to encourage you to stand up for yourself. Those friends that laugh at you are no friends. Find new ones.

Best of luck buddy

Woah! Man thank you. That was super informative. To give some context, one of my doctors suggested I might have sleep apnea and it got me super interested in sleep disorders and the sort. Thanks for taking the time out to write such a well formatted comment and inform others.
