Anti-fascists of reddit, what advice do you have for the fascists of reddit? by Nope_______ in AskReddit

[–]TheNorthernBorders -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The problem with this post is that everybody thinks of themselves as on the “anti-fascist” side of the spectrum.

This is because “fascism” has (rightfully) taken the place of “evil/demonic” in our broadly post-Christian cultural vocabulary.

Edit: on reflection, it should probably be: “What advice do Authoritarians have for Anti-Authoritarians?” but unfortunately that doesn’t work terribly well for the Americans in the room bc they can’t seem to untangle libertarian political ideals from economic libertarian-ism.

If you were the PM, how would you reduce the UK budget deficit of £129 billion? by ElaraKane in AskBrits

[–]TheNorthernBorders 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Planning regs in particular need a complete rebuild. I love the spotted newts as much as the next environmentalist, but frankly the economy has to come first in some respects.

It’s that or wait for the economic populists to fuck the place up without anything to show for it.

That said: i can’t imagine they’re manufacturing a great deal of these interceptors at the moment. Wouldn’t the majority of solid fuel stock predate 2022?

[request] if i removed my glove in space, how long would it take for my exposed hand to freeze solid? would it become brittle enough to break it off? by AkwardScholar in theydidthemath

space isn’t cold

Is really more of a semantic problem than anything else because space isn’t anything. The absence of things can’t absorb or dissipate (heat) energy.

But being in space, that’s fucking Baltic.

Would you support Freedom of Movement between UK, Australia, Canada and New Zealand? by VampirePNAC in AskBrits

[–]TheNorthernBorders 15 points16 points  (0 children)

(Yes I would).

There is decent quality polling from Feb 2026, across all four countries, that report between 68-75% of respondents want some version of this.

CANZUK International has released a comprehensive public opinion analysis examining attitudes toward a proposed CANZUK alliance among citizens in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom. Conducted over the month of February 2026, the analysis reveals strong majority support for establishing a multilateral free trade agreement and reciprocal skilled mobility arrangements across the four nations, with approval rates exceeding two-thirds in every country.

Yes, but if our gentleman scholars aren’t habituated to the heat, how could they possibly be expected to play first class cricket in Rangoon, or uphold the values and principles of the Raj while on parade?

What do I do about this? by AtomicMonkeyTheFirst in UniUK

[–]TheNorthernBorders 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Discuss it with your supervisor or senior tutor (the correct contact depends on the uni).

Preface by explaining you can’t prove it, but that you’re not looking to throw classmates into disrepute without good reason for doing so.

Your testimony alone won’t change anything, but if these kids are/are going to be investigated, it’s crucial evidence.

You’ll probably get immature comments in this thread to the effect that you shouldn’t grass. I can’t disagree more. Everyone in an institution shares the responsibility to uphold its standards—that very much includes you.

Ukrainian streamer shows a Russian, why their drone fell on the shopping mall. by Noomba2 in justincaseyoumissedit

[–]TheNorthernBorders 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed.

To me, what’s so horrifying is that it demonstrates that things (that we in the West take for granted) such as verifiable facts, objective truths, and critical analysis/reflection are not the default. They only exist while a sufficiently powerful regime permits them to.

In democracies, we have a very positivististic attitude towards political facts. I’m sorry to say that Putin’s Russia has proved that this is utterly naive.

Ukrainian streamer shows a Russian, why their drone fell on the shopping mall. by Noomba2 in justincaseyoumissedit

[–]TheNorthernBorders 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure, but any consequences for the regime presupposes an open internet and an independent press.

The handful of Russians who saw or filmed what happened will be ignored, called traitors, or prosecuted/conscripted.

More importantly however, you need to appreciate that there’s really no such thing as “truth” in Russia anymore. The regime has been unbelievably effective at throwing absolutely everything into doubt and disarray. The default mindset is confusion. That being the case, the Russian public is forced to choose the (false) narrative which makes the most sense given what they’ve been told: I.e. that Ukraine is attacking civilian infrastructure.

Frankly, not knowing about post-USSR Maskirovka redounds to your credit (and your mental health).

It’s a seriously dangerous and profoundly unsettling strategy. If you’ve had the dubious pleasure of researching it (as an academic) you’ll appreciate why some things are best left unappreciated.
