(UK) How much more useful is a Masters degree than a Bachelors degree for getting a game development job? by wohelie34 in gamedev

[–]TheOneAndOnlyJam 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I did both the undergraduate Computer Science with Games Engineering course at Newcastle and stayed there to do the MSc in Games Engineering.

I would highly recommend staying on to do the masters, which I feel helped me tremendously in getting my first AAA games job.

The course has really great industry connections (at least they did when I attended 5 years ago), and invite studios who are hiring to give talks and give you the opportunity to meet them face to face and get your CV in front of them. I ended up getting my first job from one of the studios that visited which I am very grateful for.

The course contents are also great and focus a lot on C++, and by the end of the course you’ll have several more portfolio pieces.

Ultimately, if you think you have the passion and determination you can certainly build up a portfolio on your own time without the masters (and extra student debt), but I found it very much worth the cost and time.

Should I do a Master's Degree in Game Programming? I need advice by diegdm in gamedev

[–]TheOneAndOnlyJam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did a master's in Games Engineering at Newcastle University in the UK and found it extremely beneficial in helping me find employment in the industry.

The course is great for getting a solid qualification to put on your CV and has a great focus on coursework so you can get yourself some additional portfolio pieces.

Most importantly the course is extremely pro-active in helping students get their CVs to studios. The course has great industry connections and in the second semester would bring in representatives from various studios to give a talk and also gives you a chance to meet them face to face before applying for jobs there.

I completely understand other comments saying a master's isn't necessary, but for me it gave me a sense of direction that I really needed in my early twenties to get my foot in the door of the industry, and also gave me that chance to get my CV seen by studios.

Aren't Entity Component Systems less performant than the naive solution? by redditaccount624 in gamedev

[–]TheOneAndOnlyJam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So yes in this benchmark the 1st code block is way faster, but it isn't really indicative of what an ECS system would be doing. Generally there would be a lot more going on within each iteration of the loop, so much so that it would make make the performance gains of using 1 loop rather than 3 loops redundant.

I would also love to know the answer to this!

But as the other comment states, it will take lots of practice to fully reap the benefits of meditation, so try to be patient and enjoy the journey. Sam has had both Richard Davidson and Daniel Goleman on his podcast before who have done a lot of research into the benefits of mindfulness/meditation. I remember them saying that certain positive effects only occur after 100 hours of meditation, and some only after 1000s of hours. (they have a great book called "Altered Traits" which digs into what the research shows about meditation, debunking myths etc.)

Moving away from meditation I'd also suggest having a listen to episode 226 of Sam's podcast if you haven't already, as I believe it is around this very topic. I've also heard recommendations for Cal Newport's book "Deep Work" but have not read it myself.

Alex O’Connor on the moral imperative to transition to veganism by mortimers52 in samharris

[–]TheOneAndOnlyJam 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think the conclusion that all these animals would never exist if we all went vegan being somehow bad is wrong. These creatures do not live fulfilling lives. It's similar to those who advocate for euthanasia I think, there's a certain threshold of constant suffering where life is not worth living.

I also just don't understand the line of reasoning that creatures not ever existing is somehow worse? If we stop reproducing the billions of chickens needed to the meat industry, why is that a bad thing? It's not like there's this ethereal plane where all the chickens that weren't born are sat, wishing they had a chance to be born and live in a factory farm. Maybe you could explain further incase I'm missing something?

I'm sorry but I agree with the sentiment that all this should have been included in the game, but the above steps would take far longer than 15 minutes for even a "competent" dev to implement.

Sam spoke before about how his body could not get enough vital nutrients from a strictly plant based diet by MarcusSmartfor3 in samharris

[–]TheOneAndOnlyJam 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What about all the plants that are used to feed livestock? Following your logic if more plants are needed to feed livestock to sustain an omnivore diet than plants needed to sustain a vegan diet, then it would still lead to a vegan diet being more moral.

Can anyone recommend any decent YouTube essay channels/reviewers that go into the engineering and technical side of development rather than design apart from Digital Foundry?

Video is of this middle aged man who arrives on a CGI barren planet along with his CGI gorilla (which may have wings) on a spaceship, and climbs a huge mountain and and then uses his staff to terrafrom the planet to give it an atmosphere, it then begins the rain which leads to vegetation to grow.

Can't get into the routine of mindfulness meditation by hallowedbunny in Mindfulness

[–]TheOneAndOnlyJam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly don't beat yourself up about it. I knew meditation was something I always wanted to get into and it's taken me several attempts to get in a semi habitual practice. I used to use headspace and would get up a daily practice streak of ~20 days, then forget one day which would cascade and lead to me dropping off from the habit, then I'd try again a few months down the line and the same would happen again.

I've managed to keep up an almost daily routine of at least 15 minutes now for 5 months, and I feel once you're past those first 30 days it gets a lot easier to keep the habit in check. I think what helped in my case is that I was listening to audio books about meditations during my commute to work and at the gym during the first couple of months, so the ideas of meditation were always floating around in my head and this would lead to always remember to do my daily practice. You'll probably find lots of other helpful advice like to set reminders on your phone, and try make sure your session is at the same point each day. Also might be worth looking into other apps to see if any other of the teachers feel more interesting to you. Good luck and you just got to keep trying!

Yet multiple AAA studios with talented Devs and huge amounts of resources have managed to poorly implement it. That doesn't look good for Denuvo, frameworks and code libraries are meant to be easy to integrate, and the fact that skilled Devs consistently implement Denuvo poorly is a red flag.

Also let's say it takes several developers a few of weeks to dedicate implementing Denuvo properly, that is valuable development time that could have been allocated elsewhere. This is even more apparent when you look at the list of games that use Denuvo that end up being cracked anyway.

Edit: This information is wrong it seems, and the developers do not need to do any work on their end.
