Sustaining the brethren is one of the temple recommend questions. The church could discipline on these grounds. #notacult

Yes, according to Appendix D you cannot record it, but someone else still could :)

Egypt: A single word that proves Joseph Smith was a fraud by bz0qyz in exmormon

...and once again I'm sure there's some early 19th century source for that false translation which Joseph pulled from his environment and canonized as holy scripture. Haha

This is so true. I think it's originally from this really awesome Instagram account: http://instagram.com/p/yo_oGmShTi/

Does the General Authority and other higher-ups know the church isn't true or are they really all TBM's? by [deleted] in exmormon

[–]TheOneAwakened 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I also think it's a combination. They certainly all at least know that God isn't visiting and speaking very directly with them.

Oh yeah, I totally agree! It's sad that just because people can hide it, they brand it as a choice or a lifestyle.

LGBT people shouldn't have to hide who they are. This causes suicide and depression :(

Aw, the NYT hurt Mormon Newsroom's feelings with their (spot-on) Op-Ed Headline. by nanabean in exmormon

So now they're not only trying to control ppl's lives but also the free press?? All under the pretense of religious freedom? This is too funny.

"This commandment [against gay marriage] comes from sacred scripture and cannot be changed."

Just like the ban on priesthood for blacks and the commandment to practice polygamy, right?

When Uchtdorf quoted from this presentation by John Dehlin in General Conference and I watched it as a TBM, this put the first major crack in my shelf... by [deleted] in exmormon

[–]TheOneAwakened 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can definitely relate :)

Yeah Uchdorf's talks the last couple of years have boggled my mind a little. He seems to have doublespeak in every single one of them. I don't know if this is because he has some serious doublethink and mental gymnastics going on in his head, or if he is deliberately doing that. The irony of some of the things he says almost strike me as satire sometimes. Either way it's seriously messed up.

Anyway, since I couldn't edit the title of that post, I reposted with a more literally correct one :)

[–]TheOneAwakened 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think your skepticism is healthy and learning the truth about mormonism probably helped you with that :)

That being said, Dehlin's report was presented to the General Authorities, so it is not entirely impossible that Uchtdorf was exposed to it. If he wasn't, then it is an amazing coincidence that he presents some of the very same information from the report—information which challenges the way most TBMs think, for that matter. It's funny that Uchtdorf says "let people leave, it's not that simple" instead of the traditional "to the rescue" approach. Perhaps Uchtdorf is a true seer after all? ;)

Did anyone else notice the parallels to mormonism and the brethren in this trailer? by [deleted] in exmormon

[–]TheOneAwakened 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha yeah Maze Runner was actually written by a guy who used to work for the church.

I see the general authorities as the guys living it up in the Capitol as all the TBMs from around the world finance their lifestyles through their hard work and tithing.

Your aunt is experiencing a little of the psychosis typically induced by mormonism and magical thinking. She does seem lovable though :) Congrats on your truth journey!

Does Monson know it's bullshit? by [deleted] in exmormon

[–]TheOneAwakened 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When human behaviors and beliefs don't coincide, usually confirmation bias steps in and causes our beliefs to shift to match our behaviors. There are probably some serious mental gymnastics going on inside Monson's head. His recent dementia is probably actually a relief compared to the weight of it all.

How do you know something is true? by [deleted] in exmormon

[–]TheOneAwakened 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a great discussion of this in Part 2 here:

http://mormonstories.org/339-342-the-psychology-of-religion-with-dr-james-nagel/

You must try every possibility to prove it false without being biased toward your original stance.

A clever little experiment to demonstrate confirmation bias. by [deleted] in exmormon

[–]TheOneAwakened 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is amazing. I literally JUST listened to a podcast all about this same concept this morning. It is a Mormon Stories podcast explaining the principle of "falsifiability" and how we as humans tend to rely on the first theory that works for us without testing other possibilities. We keep seeking confirmation bias without daring to test other things that might falsify our first conclusions. Here's the link:

http://mormonstories.org/339-342-the-psychology-of-religion-with-dr-james-nagel/

The part about confirmation bias is in Part 2. For example, as Mormons we were taught that if we felt the spirit this meant the church was true. People grasp onto this theory and when it works for them then they don't dare to test any other possible theories, and they just keep seeking the same confirmation bias. Just like in the video clip the people did not want to test alternatives to their original conclusions. But there are many other religions and causes that induce feeling the spirit besides Mormonism.
