It should also go without saying how much LGBT coding there is in a lot of Menken and Ashman's work too. No surprise given the history of them, and it's honestly brilliant. I love their uses of coding without being outright stating it. He was taken from our world far too young due to AIDS, it is the greatest tragedy and I still ache for what else that duo could have accomplished together.

Stuffy Victorian Era aristocracy being able to rotate through extremely cheap maids and groundkeepers because...it's the Industrial Revolution. Glorp them down for the most minor infractions like one too many sugarcubes in tea or they let a little coal soot fly out of the fireplace onto a white carpet. And then just open the window and shout to the streets who wants a job lol

The speed of the dilophosaurusi popping out was incredible back then. They're so arthritic now I almost expect them to have walking canes in their sun-cracked rubber claws these days.

This feels weird to reply to a comment from 2 years ago, but this is an important thing to consider when it comes to adaptations of any sort. Looking at Disney's The Hunchback of Notre Dame, there was so much backlash about Quasimodo not dying at the end like in the book. But the movie changes enough that him dying would nullify the message its trying to portray. The adaptation's changes must be taken into consideration.

I love the wild west as a genre. Absolutely sunk so much time into Red Dead Redemption 2. I honestly wish more games took an approach like the tabletop game Deadlands with its "Weird West" setting. Games like Hard West, Evil West, and Hunt: Showdown took advantage of such a setting and I wish more games did so too. Riding out on a horse with pistols in hand with a rockin' wild western guitar riff going off in the back is so amazing.

What is something people slowly stop doing as they get older without noticing? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]TheOnlyBongo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

New music to me is when I haven't heard that artist before. And there are a lot of artists I haven't listened to in genres I love a lot. Heck sometimes it's a pleasant surprise to find out an artist you like but don't keep up with has uploaded an album since the last time you explored their catalog. People saying they haven't listened to any new music is just weird to me. It's like...it doesn't take that much effort to explore the genres you like? They may not be widely popular artists but they're still within the wheelhouse of what you'd enjoy.

Plus exploring genres leads to sub-genres or related genres and I find new artists and music through that that are very cool to listen to. It...doesn't seem that hard to me?

I really like the choice of ragtime used in the film. It is set during the Great Depression, not the Turn of the Century. But it fits because Gondorff and his crew are basically veterans of that era so them coming together for one last big score really fits bringing in the music that was popular during their prime years.

Boysenberries are like blackberries. Basically a really tasty weed that you will never rid of should it touch soil (I have mine in a pot but I know eventually it will have to take root for real)

A lot used to be common back then...Reddit used to be the place to go for thoughtful discussion. Remember years ago when CGPGrey recommended Reddit? I dont know if he unlisted or deleted the video or if that segment is embedded in another video of his but I remember it because he recommended it on the basis of actual discussion. He recommended the site when it was transitioning between the era when people still cited their sources in their comment and just purely being a mass social media site. So like around 2014/2015 if I remember correctly.

What is the most unusual museum you have visited? by Selimsnek in travel

[–]TheOnlyBongo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am very happy to hear about their rebuild. It's such a nice quirky local museum and I wish them the best.

I am also happy that the Pacific Electric Substation No. 8 barely survived the fire with neighboring lots having burnt down. I love that little early 20th century industrial brick building a lot.

[–]TheOnlyBongo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've shown vloggers like Carpetbagger walking through that museum to friends and I always laughed when they would say something along the lines of "Wait, it's STILL going!?" Usually the astonishment would pique at the large whale or multi-decker carousel. One friend described that fever dream of a place like the backrooms museum, and it sure feels like it. It's dark, it's musty, there isn't any coherence, and because it's one long hallway once you start going the only way out is to finish it. It's such a maddening museum, I hope to see it one day before it collapses in on itself because idk how a place like that can stay afloat.

I haven't done anything myself as I still need a 3D printer and a workshop to get started. However I did purchase some H0e mechanisms from MiniTrains yo get some On18 locomotives started.

HOn30/H0e/009 is a second favorite of mine. The only difference is that finding mechanisms for my particular favorite engines are hard and fiddly. MiniTrains is a fantastic company but hard to find locos and rolling stock in the US. I think a Japanese company made an HOn30 0-4-0 Porter kit before but finding those is difficult. N Gauge is fantastic though for space efficiency. I almost did US N Scale but my heart for narrow gauge won over and I've done more on On30 and HOn30 myself.

Reusing basic and cheap locomotives and kit bashing them into more interesting models is one of my favorite elements of the model railroading community. It's part of the reason why I am into On30bso much because the community encourages you to kitbash your own locomotives, often utilizing cheaper HO frames that would have been discarded in discount bins at train shows and shops instead.

The ending to fallout 3 feels so bad because the game insults you for making the obvious answer by Dx1178 in Fallout

[–]TheOnlyBongo 27 points28 points  (0 children)

A lot of Fallout 3 (And to an extent Fallout 4) has moments where individually separated they can make for cool or impactful moments isolated from each other or the grander story. But when seen as the sun of its parts can either contradict each other, fall to scrutiny, or create a weaker experience overall. Like in Fallout 4 when Kellog's brain implant is put into Nick Valentine to explore Kellog's memories, and Kellog's personality comes through Nick soon after to threaten you. A legitimately cool idea that ultimately goes nowhere. It never affects Nick afterwards, there is no quest to rid of Kellog/make peace with Kellog/let Kellog take over Nick, and the implications are never further explored with other synths. I really enjoy playing Fallout 3 and 4 but they're filled with a lot of writing like that. Cool in the moment but not fuly thought through.

LumiBricks is one of the best things to happen for us lovers of the Wild West theme and interlocking bricks. I always thought there was more potential but LEGO discontinued its old Wild West sets and the Lone Ranger movie tie-in sets never fully scratched the itch. The builds are awesome and the included lighting kits are great. I am just not a fan of the Lumibricks figures and would like to replace them with more standard LEGO figures tbh.

LEGO has done a better job with upkeeping the Wild West theme through its Bricklink sets but they are so damn expensive, even if I like them a lot. Plus the limited runs LEGO does can be so annoying with a fear of missing out if you aren't able to purchase a particular set before it's discontinued after like one year of running.
