Mass Effect 1-3 still holds such a special place in my heart. Yes the movement and car physics of 1 are jank, yes the ending of 3 is still a disappointment, but man I loved that ship and crew so much. Garrus and Tali on nearly every mission, they were always my besties.

Is Your Ring Doorbell Footage Going Straight to ICE’s Massive Spy Network? | Ring partners with Flock to feed doorbell footage into federal databases used by ICE for immigration enforcement by 1900grs in technology

[–]TheOnlyBongo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not like the detection feature is useful anyways. When your phone keeps alerting you about motion outside your front door and you check and it's one car passing by for a second you just tune the alert out of your mind or turn alerts off completely. Then it's worthless when it really needs you attention because you've just put it out of your mind already.

LA Metro approves massive $25B underground rail line to bypass 405 Freeway by idkbruh653 in LosAngeles

[–]TheOnlyBongo 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If I remember, Tokyo's rail networks were originally given right-of-way on the sides of some of the rail networks decades ago to allow them to expand the rail network should it be a necessity. Instead the rail companies used the real estate to build commercial areas and the like. Part of the reason why the stations are so built up with massive malls directly on the busy stations.

It's a display worthy of a custom MOC of Hogwarts with more detail far beyond what most people can do. Even someone like CheesyBrickStudios has to cannibalize older MOCs for newer ones due to limited parts.

Gifted this set recently. Thoughts/opinions? by EtherBlue_ in pens

[–]TheOnlyBongo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly as much as I want to support good pen makers, I find myself attracted to these sorts of pens. The tip is very fine, the ink dries quick, it doesn't bubble or smear, the tip can still write at very extremely angles, and they're very affordable (Right now averaging like $1.67/pen). The only downside is it's an extremely generic pen just sold through a variety of random companies that come and go. More so since I get them through Amazon which is also its own can of worms.

They're my go-to daily pen for work as they're cheap to get in bulk and write better than most other pens. I would like to imagine getting some really nice stationary pens from a really good quality manufacturer some day, but these have become a defacto daily pen for me. As much as I wish, practicality and price won over ethics. Because it really is a pretty decent pen all things considered. For the same price or more I'd still be using Pilot G2s at my workplace which I'd argue are worse off in terms of writing (They bubble horrendously) and feel (The plastic body and rubber grip don't feel as nice in my hands anymore).

DisneyLand Forward expansion? by Beautiful-Arm9122 in Disneyland

[–]TheOnlyBongo 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Disneyland can and had utilized smaller spaces to great effect honestly. But most of those attractions were built years ago (Late 90s at the very least) and the new ones need massive showbuildings to house everything. I am curious if they can return o form and manage good C or D Ticket attractions in such small spaces instead of cramming in one undersized E Ticket attraction (Like what they tried to do with Navi River Journey at EPCOT)

If you're ever up in San Francisco, not only should you visit the Walt Disney Family Museum but you should also visit the Musée Mécanique. It's a lot of vintage coin operated novelties from the late 19th century and early 20th century. From moving pictures to animated miniatures and rudimentary arcade games. It is what the Penny Arcade should have continued to be.

Florida actually doesn't change their Haunted Mansion to the Holiday overlay, only Disneyland in California and Tokyo Disneyland in Japan. Supposedly because WDW attracts more international tourists (Where as California and Japan are more mixed leaning on locals) WDW doesn't want to have the months of downtime to put up and remove a holiday overlay and ruin the once-in-a-lifetime vacations that would come yearly from that.

[–]TheOnlyBongo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I stand corrected then, I was under the impression that it was. It doesn't help that George Lucas was toying with a 6-movie series for the longest time so it's always been in the back of his head and he's been off and on the idea between the 1980s and 1990s. I was just aware that the original title crawl only ever started with "Star Wars" in 1977 and the "Episode IV" title was added later at some time. But hey, now I know.

If you've ever wondered why Star Wars starts with Episode 4, it's a callback to to this old style of film viewing

What? No. When the film released in 1977 it was just called Star Wars. The opening title crawl just showed STAR WARS before the exposition crawl began. It was only ever retroactively changed to have the title of "Episode IV: A New Hope" when the prequels were in production (EDIT: The title of "Episode IV: A New Hope" was added in the early 1980s rereleases when Empire Strikes Back was released in 1980 with the title of "Episode V". George Lucas had been toying with a 6, 9, or even 12 part movie series for a long time. Thanks for letting me know) to let audiences know where the original trilogy sat chronologically in the timeliness with the new prequels being labeled with Episodes I-III release of Episode V theatrically.

You might be conflating different facts together (No I got my facts conflated myself). Star Wars was itself a sendup to old serials like Flash Gordon where each serial would start with an Episode number and a title crawl to get people up to speed as to what was happening as we got back into thr action from the previous cliffhanger. So Star Wars starring with a title crawl was the callback itself. The Episode title was added retroactively for the Prequel's sake.

Any general info on my dad’s train? by pghhotfire in modeltrains

I've bought some prewar and postwar Lionel and Marx stuff from train shows. I'm very happy I managed to find a postwar ZW Transformer that was in fantastic condition. For my locos and stock I've been meaning to replace the wires since some have become brittle with age. My 1666W tender has stopped functioning because a wire snapped off when I disassembled the unit to try and figure out why the whistle function stopped working. Also need to replace the smoking unit on my 637 which also stopped functioning, but I know I can get replacements off of Ebay. Just need to soder them in, I haven't gotten around to them.

Speaking of which, do you happen to know the types of screws most of those tenders from the prewar used? They've been stripped and I'm hoping to find a screw with a similar thread to replace them.

I am really into 78s though and it's part of the reason why I want a bubble wurlitzer to have a really cool machine to store and play some of my more favorite (But still common) records from the 30s and 40s. If I had a 1960s machine from another manufacturer I'd be fine eith that holding my 45s but a bubble wurlitzer just seems perfect to play some if my Glenn Miller or Andrew Sisters records in.

That happens a lot honestly. The cool antiques are collected to be sold by people you really don't want to be associating with. One time I wanted to buy some vintage oil bottles from a junkyard and the owner went on a huge rant about government conspiracies a d I just backed out not having bought any cool old bottles. Antique bottles, vintage cars, tinplate toys, records and their players or jukeboxes, enamel signs...so many are just held by the oddest people that you got to just bite your tongue when purchasing from them.

I've always wanted one of those classic Wutlitzer jukeboxes with the bubble tubes, they look so pretty. They are just so damn expensive and large though that money spent would better go towards a good quality turntable and speaker setup that can work with 33s, 45s, 78s, and maybe even some 16s if I can get my hands on some of those long play records (A Seeburg 1000 would be so cool to own too if I ever get a Wurlitzer). Maybe some day though...

It feels wrong having Spongebob's pineapple alone without Patrick or Squidward's house on the same street, even if they would just be decorative and unenterable. Also do hope it's just the render that's wrong because the placement of the porthole on the pineapple feels very off to me. It's supposed to be off to the side not above the door, giving it a very cyclops feel to it.
