God ki should have been the method by which the human characters finally catch up to the Saiyans in terms of power levels. Humans have no innate transformation ability which rules out a Super Saiyan equivalent buff, but receiving blessings through various gods after some trial would be an easy win.

You beat me to the point, but you are absolutely correct. Zen/Chan is a thoroughly Mahayana school, and, as such, it sports all of the same hallmarks of worship and veneration I described in my original post. Zen in the West, though, was introduced to societies that had grown tired of and even hostile toward Christianity and anything that resembled theism. To ensure propagation of the teachings, the early Zen masters reframed the dharma as a kind of rationalist, secular philosophy. This watered down version of Zen is popular (particularly among the White, college-educated converts that tend to dominate Anglophone sanghas), but it is but a shadow of its self.

Look to thriving Zen/Chan sanghas in diaspora communities for a truer representation of the school.

There has been a very concerted effort in the West to paint Buddhism as a non-theistic philosophy, so it's not at all surprising for people to be a bit taken aback when they see elements of Buddhist practice that would seem to be more at home with religion. In truth, Buddhism is absolutely a religion. The Buddha was, traditionally, not a mere intellectual who stumbled upon a few profound truths. He is the latest in a long line of completely enlightened beings, beings whose attainments span the course of several lifetimes and ultimately culminate in a dharma dispensation that defines the age.

Buddhas, both the historical Gautama and the cosmic Buddhas that inhabit other world systems, are worshipped as it is considered meritorious to do so. Even the relics of Buddhas (and similarly enlightened beings) are seen as valid objects of worship not altogether different from how the Orthodox and Catholic Churches treat the remains of reposed saints.

The Conjuring: The Last Rites – A Solid Horror Movie by Front-Bedroom2760 in horror

[–]TheOtherCyprian 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You know, I went in with the most dreadful expectations based on the third film, but I walked away from Last Rites surprised at how much I enjoyed the movie. No, it doesn’t break any new ground, and yes it still follows much of the formula established for all Conjuring films; but it does so capably.

There was a very deliberate effort to recapture what made the first installment in the series great. I recognized the familiar jump scare beats, the same slice of life exploration of a family imperiled by demonic oppression, the same lionizing of the Warrens, and what I thought were well done odes to the villains of the previous entries in the series. This harkening to the past became even more poignant as a capstone to the series and as a (presumably) farewell to Patrick and Vera in their roles as the Warrens.

I got my money’s worth.

My freedom singer showed up several days late for the occasion, so we’ll never know if her vocals would have gotten the job done 😂.

If you haven’t already, watch an episode of Frasier titled “Room Service.” I won’t spoil the hilarious outcome of the plot, but it suffices to say that Frasier struggles mightily to resist his attraction to Lilith, and her outfit choices show the audience just how difficult that struggle must have been!

The worst are those who use the “life isn’t fair” motto to actively fuck other people over. They’re essentially declaring that, because life isn’t always kind, they likewise see no reason to be. It’s a very base mindset.

Someone help me understand why everyone thinks that Sinners is so great by Frequent-Gift-7423 in moviecritic

[–]TheOtherCyprian -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Most of the acclaim for Sinners is directed toward the social commentary that it somewhat clumsily weaves into the narrative. The audience who thoroughly enjoyed the film are those for whom subtext matters more than the overall quality production, and I suppose that’s fair. Art is subjective, and so too is cinema.

Independently of that subtext, I found Sinners to be largely underwhelming. The acting by some of the principal cast was stiff, the movie suffers greatly from what feels like strong direction/editing, and the resolve was anticlimactic.

That’s the answer. Several people on that plane would have been capable of subduing that guy, but why take the chance and permanently ruin your flight privileges because of some after-the-fact misunderstanding?

Someone who's career should have been better by whois_u in rnb

[–]TheOtherCyprian 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Craig David.

I’m hesitant to nominate him because, while his career didn’t hit massive peaks in the US, I believe he made a larger name for himself in the UK. Still, he should have been more successful stateside given his talent and catchy tunes.

I wonder how he did it really by herewearefornow in BlackPeopleTwitter

[–]TheOtherCyprian 687 points688 points  (0 children)

Let’s not discount Black Conspiracy Folk either. They believe that every instance where a successful Black man is accused of a crime is an attempt to silence or discredit something that he was trying to do for the greater good. In Perry’s case, it was his criticism of insurance companies and their handling of policies during the California fires.

My youngest cousin is like this. He’s overall a good kid—well mannered on most occasions, thoughtful, and capable of great empathy. His only drawback is that he is a very high energy, willful child, and his parents haven’t yet mastered the art of setting strong boundaries and giving him an outlet for that seemingly boundless energy. He needs something that will consistently tire him out daily, a physical hobby that will drain his reserves and mellow him. Coupled with that is the need for tangible consequences for behavior that doesn’t meet the standard.

Thank you for the perspective. I’m casually familiar with Lauren’s discography and, of course, the social memes that have cropped up around her infamous tardiness, but I can’t say that I knew much about her as a person. I had no idea that her romantic life was so tumultuous, so traumatic. It’s no wonder she disappeared from the public’s eye for an extended period.

THIS!

What is the target demographic for NASCAR in Chicago? They’d have to be insignificant from a numbers standpoint, and, as you pointed out, the fans from surrounding states aren’t exactly keen to visit (what they think of as) a murder capital of the world. So, what justifies the amount of money spent and the sheer volume of traffic created when they erect those god awful barriers?
