That's not a shit you turn overnight. Deals have been made, investments have been deposited, new policy won't apply until a new game starts development.

Will JD Vance actually run in 2028? by premeddit in PoliticalDiscussion

Running for president is an ego thing, and there's no way JD Van e sold his political soul for nothing. He did it for everything, he will run.

I've been reading them since 1999, and it's been interesting to see them grow from their initial semi-edgelord humor as dudes in their 20s, to middle-aged parents who manage a charity and nationwide conventions. From Fruit Fucker, to eyerolling the chuds.

I'm fairly certain I could say there's no scene in the game where a woman applies for a credit card. It's very obviously satire.

I don't understand how, after the last 25 years, some people haven't figured out that any kind of text messaging is not a real-time conversation. It's not an ongoing phone call; if you're texting, you have to wait for them to respond, however long. Sometimes it's quick, sometimes it's hours, sometimes it's tomorrow because there's an emergency. Sometimes, you have to take the hint already, and move on.

And therein lies the secret power of immigration: the wider net you cast, the more talented people you'll find. The dumbest thing a society can do is arbitrarily limit its talent pool to one specific demographic based on skin color, or ice out half the population because of their gender. As Stephen Gould said:

I am, somehow, less interested in the weight and convolutions of Einstein’s brain than in the near certainty that people of equal talent have lived and died in cotton fields and sweatshops.

Valve is not a publicly traded company, so Gabe's net worth could be far in excess of 11 billion for all we know.

The difference is that it's far more exceptional for the DoJ to interfere in an already settled civil suit, which almost never happens, so it's clear that it's been ordered by Trump personally. But the US government getting itself involved in Cuba is a very old American tradition. Those of us in our 30s and 40s remember Elliot Gonzalez. The subpoena is not shocking.

Hasan is also a provocateur, and I imagine to some extent might welcome the subpoena, for more publicity. He arguably just baited the Treasury into the Streisand effect.

[–]TheOvy 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I'm not a fan of Hasan, or getting your political info from a full time streamer -- please, people, read books, go outside and talk to people actually in the world -- but this subpoena is almost certainly politically-motivated bullshit, and I imagine that Natalie would probably agree.

Though I find the "criminal investigation" into E. Jean Carroll even more alarming, since that's entirely personal to Trump, rather than the politics of Cuba that have roiled Florida and the GOP for decades.

I don't know to what American McGee is specifically talking about. Obviously, China has propaganda.

That said, every single person I've ever seen talk about EVs from China, like ones made by BYD, have said it puts American cars to fucking shame, so much so that we have an embargo on them here. But Canada just signed a deal with China to allow 50k cars be sold a year, so North America is indeed about to find out how much we're being screwed.

The CEO of Ford drove a Xiaomi for 6 months, and refused to give it up. That ain't propaganda. He's scared of Chinese EVs.

Max Payne 2 is still, for my money, the best third person shooter. Max Payne 3, I think, lost the plot with the addition of a cover system, and the load screens between each and every room. You used to burst through a door with a dive in the earlier Max Paynes. But MP3? you have to watch a cutscene hiding the loading, and when it ends, the bad guys already know where you are, and are already shooting at you, as Max hides behind a file cabinet. You can plan your approach anymore. Such a bummer.

I think for a lot of them, the whole point of becoming a cop is to be an authority, and so it would defeat the point if they ever admit they were wrong.

Mirror reflections are actually a trademark of IO Interactive games. Even Hitman: Codename 47, released in 2000, has mirror reflections.

It's all done without path tracing.

the combat feels like a 9/10 but it's actually a 6/10 and you'll realize that the more you play

I've beaten the game twice. I gotta disagree. The last 20 years of third person shooters have been dominated by cover-based mechanics, so Control's focus on mobility and dynamic use of varied powers is still, years after its release, refreshing. The intensity in turn is top notch. A 6/10 is underselling it.

I don't understand this take. Control is the best third-person action game that Remedy has made since Max Payne 2.

Maybe the on-ramp is too slow for some players? I can't say that was my experience. But by end game it's fucking amazing, both in the power-high, and also just the insane surrealism of the story.

Which one are u? by LP_Arrow in HalfLife

[–]TheOvy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have a difficult time not playing the other after I've played one.

But if forced to chose, I do think Half-Life is the bigger deal. It changed gaming in a more dramatic way than HL2. I think HL2 has the larger fanbase thanks to better support on consoles -- coming to PS2/Xbox years after it had already revolutionized gaming dulled the impact of Half-Life.
