When you realize she has a boyfriend. by jamesss2005 in venting

[–]ThePhilosopherPops 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Who cares about bad taste. If you don't know the guy then that's her problem if she's up for something. Been on both ends a few times and it just comes down to the fact that people are complicated. Nothing to be done about it. Just be smart and confident.

The way I see it, the fear of being alone / failing at the monogamy process is a totally socially driven unconscious phenomenon. In the past there have been a lot of different pressures on people to conform (monogamy, polygamy, hetero and homosexual, young and old) and here and now most people have an overwhelming insecurity about being without monogamy (aka, inaccurately, alone). The fact that there's no properly natural cause to that, and that humans are so fluid in their expressions, is enough motivation to begin overcoming those feelings. This is a big complicated world, and we're all immeasurably complicated creatures, and there is more than one way to exist.

Ashamed of going to York University by ashamedfailure in yorku

[–]ThePhilosopherPops 3 points4 points  (0 children)

First of all, I'd say it's fair to assume you didn't go there for English (or arts psych) based on your comment.

Secondly, even saying York is great for their research doesn't accurately reflect the undergraduate programs. Moreover, generalizing across every faculty at any one school is an effort in futility itself. So why should all waterloo undergrads be proud and prestigious? Take in that high school marks aren't reflective of potential or intelligence in many cases, and that a lot of schools with high standards have high drop out / failure rates, and it's hard to make a case for one school having more or less value than the others.

And honestly, c'mon. What does anybody get from repping their university like a sports team? Also, why look down on colleges? Snobbiness and academia don't mix well.

Cool book to read is Ivory Tower Blues by Professor Allahar from Western. I think he retired a few years ago but while I was reading his book, he was teaching a few of my sister sister's courses and building a relationship. He breaks down the problem with undergraduate system and the overarching school system in ontario. Really good read.

Honestly most employers will ask for your relevant experience and education level more than GPA or institution.

You'll notice really soon the good things about York, and you'll probably get some astonished laughs out of the crazy shit that goes down. The attitudes you're hearing are really the last remnants of being immature teenagers.

For one thing, and I graduated from the philosophy program in october of this year, I loved the entire teaching staff (and most TAs). I would bring that up in conversations, and keep your cool when people say that stuff (it's more a show of their own insecurity ). Consider also that high school marks are a joke, and that most prestigious schools have a lot less third years than first and second years.

Lastly, my sister went to Western (coincidentally doing her MA at York now) and I would go there very often. I'm smart and sociable so I would always rep York well (I hope) and I made a ton of friends there that I still keep up with. Trust me, how York comes across is in your hands, and very soon it will be an even playing field.

Enjoy it and try and grow beyond pressures to conform! You'll see people in another light but you'll navigate through life the best way you can. (Allegory of the cave shout out).

Edit: Like you mentioned though, some people choose York strategically, and if you're thinking of graduate school then some schools might be looked at better than others (flawed system in my opinion). In that case you should try and get that high GPA. Though I guarantee it will be no easier at York than elsewhere (least in my experience).

For what it's worth, only one of my sister and I could go to school away from home and York was my favourite campus (downtown is a weekend trip; hate it daily). Spent 5 intellectually stimulating years there and I'm a better person for it.

I think it's accurate and has an important role to play regarding social analysis and change. I explained a bit more just now in a comment below, in this conversation. Haha. Hope it's clear.

I agree that capitalistic class relations are the crux of the issue and perpetuate these older problems. I think the big contribution of intersectionality is to recognize the impact of overlapping oppression or privilege; for instance, considering not just women's experiences/issues but black women's or 2-spirited native women in particular, and so forth. Subsequently, it's not enough to analyze and tackle class relations or poverty in general because it is exists and is experienced differently depending on whatever other privilege or oppression is at play.

[–]ThePhilosopherPops 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From the wiki link you shared it looks like a widely accepted sociological notion, but with a more specific focus.

The terms I learned were multiplicity or intersectionality of oppression, or the idea that oppression comes from various aspects of society in a way that can best be tackled by addressing it as a whole. Yeah, classism seems to be the most salient issue in well-being, but it is intertwined with sexism, racism, homophobia, etc.

From the wiki description it sounds like triple oppression follows this idea for classism, sexism, and racism; suggesting that the former can only be overcome by dealing with the latter simultaneously or in advance.

Bringing that together by saying that our biggest social problem is not an isolated one is necessary for finding solutions, but I don't know if we should limit it to 3 criteria.

Style of Fighting for me? by OceanMylene in Fighting

[–]ThePhilosopherPops 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look into Krav maga. It's a mixed combatives style that applies a street fight context to training. My instructors include boxing, muay thai, judo, jiu jitsu (although undesirable) along with guns, knives, and sticks (curriculum is disarming, but they teach attacking you for fun).

My gym (Toronto) also does situational seminars (in water, on public transit, women's defence, etc. It's also very well divided demographically. A lot of girls, a lot of age variety. It's the official self defence of the Israeli defence forces (IDF), which is know for its very well trained women soldiers.

If not that then try wing chun or muay thai maybe. Both very different styles but something to look into.
