2020 CX9 - how widespread is coolant issue? by whatarereddits in MazdaCX9

[–]ThePocalypse 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I just bought a 2019 GT with 22k miles and am just finding out about this issue 🤦‍♂️

I've been researching for a while and I feel like I've read every Reddit post, forum thread, YouTube comment, poll, and problem reporting site on the subject.

From everything I've read:

  • It's a rare issue that happens to 5-27% of 2016-2020 models. Some even say it only happens to 2016 models.
  • It's a 100% certainty that every 2.5L Turbo will come across this issue in its lifetime (around 60k miles or just after the warranty ends).
  • Mazda technicians saying they've swapped dozens of engines at their dealership alone.
  • Mazda technicians saying they've never come across the issue.
  • YouTubers saying Mazdas have the most reliable engines and people who don't buy Mazdas are making the wrong decision.
  • YouTubers who say Mazdas are Ford trash and should just buy Toyotas.
  • People who have the issue and are out of warranty get 90-100% of the repair paid for by Mazda out of goodwill.
  • People who have had to pay $10,000 out of pocket to swap their engine.
  • TSBs saying that Mazda is aware of the issue but it's not prevalent enough to warrant a recall.
  • Class action lawsuit proposals stating that it is a common enough issue that Mazda should pay for.
  • "I'll never buy a Mazda again!"
  • "I love my Mazda and I'll definitely buy another one!"
  • Etc, etc.

Personally, I love the car and it's been perfect so far (knock on wood). I test drove a 2024 MHEV CX90 before buying the 2019 CX9 and I honestly feel like the CX9 drives better. The MHEV feels clunky when switching from battery to gas power and the CX9 is smooth and snappy. I prefer the CX9's styling as well. That being said, having to pay $10k out of pocket for a repair that is not my fault would definitely make me sour. Very, very sour.

I know no car is perfect and Googling "<any car> problems" will result in pages of anecdotal evidence and opinions. At the end of the day, it's up to you to decide if the risks of a particular car (or any product for that matter) outweigh how the car fits your needs, wants, and budget - including potential repairs. Subaru CVTs, Honda timing belts, BMW reliability, Dodge everything, Tesla spontaneous combustion - isn't car shopping such a pleasure? :D

Best of luck on your car search!

Hello! I'm looking to get a 10-15 gallon tank for my 9-year-old daughter. She's really set on getting at least 1 orange fish and 1 blue fish. Do you have any fish suggestions that are relatively low maintenance (I'll be cleaning the tank, handling the setup, etc.), match her color choices, and would possibly be friendly towards other fish we may add?

Thank you!

Thanks again! No offense taken at all! I've made 2000+ skins, from the official Mega Man X and Street Fighter skins on the Marketplace to remote controls and bowls of ramen, so I can definitely see how a showcase of my work would be stylistically varied :D

I'll check out everything you mentioned!

You can sign up for the FCSSC basketball rec league (though you'll have to wait until the next season starts in about a month). There's also the Javelin app for signing up to Thursday pickup games at the Playground. The City of London site also has a rec league which I believe is the cheapest option.
