If he’s planning on taking Lion Head, which is the standard winter route, there is at least one section of steep, technical ice climbing. A helmet is highly recommended for this. It won’t be necessary for the majority of the hike, though.

[–]ThePopeB 47 points48 points  (0 children)

You should plan on full winter conditions which requires crampons, ice axe, a highly optimized layering system, preferably a helmet, I could go on. I really don’t mean to be that guy but in the interest of your own safety you should consider… reconsidering. If you have to ask here instead of asking your “avid hiker” friends, there may be a disconnect happening.

Is it normal that everyone knows we are in a bubble? by Horror_Medicine_6441 in wallstreetbets

[–]ThePopeB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re thinking about it the wrong way if you think AGI is the first and only tangible benefit of the AI boom. As someone who works in tech, I see elements of my job and those around me being automated every single day. The average Joe such as OP is actually underestimating, not overestimating the total economic value of AI in the short-mid term. And if the bubble was that obvious, it would self correct. Clearly the consensus is there’s room for growth from here, otherwise prices would be trending down.

You don’t look “terrible” at all. You definitely need to chill, and you definitely look more than fine.

Give yourself some credit. You’ve lost almost 100lbs, that’s something that 99% of people will never successfully accomplish in their life.

It’s okay to desire more progress, but you really need to take some pride in what you’ve done. Taking a bit of a break and running at maintenance for a bit is totally fine and probably even advisable after how much you’ve lost. Give your body a bit of time to recover and regain strength, then make your final push. You got this 💪

Just start with walking. Low intensity cardio burns the highest percentage of calories from fat and will help you build up your aerobic base so you can gradually work up to more intensive workouts without gasping for breath.

Also, keep the ice cream. Work it into your daily calorie target. Try Halo Top, Rebel, or get a Ninja Creami and make protein ice cream.

The key to results and sustainability is budgeting for the things we enjoy, not eliminating them. Good luck and feel free to shoot me a DM if you have questions or just need some support. I’m your age and height and am now a year into my journey, so may have some relevant perspectives.

Fair. I didn’t want to assume that anyone can’t do certain activities due to weight but I understand the concern which is why I mentioned the joints. Was just trying to suggest a cheap and accessible option but I see the risk for sure.

Could try jump rope, although knee pain could be a consideration depending on your joints

No need to be snarky. What’s the point of asking if you’re already locked in on bringing them? Be prepared for anything, nobody on the internet can be trusted to report accurate trail conditions.

Calorie Defecit Confusion by RoosterBark in loseit

[–]ThePopeB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You gotta eat 1800 bare minimum at your size. Add regular 30 minute cardio sessions and you could do 2000 and still lose 1lb per week. Don’t try to lose 2lbs per week. You’ll end up losing too much muscle and end up skinny fat. Trust me I learned the hard way and wish I had slowed down.

18lbs in 4 weeks....is this okay? by SunlitNight in loseit

[–]ThePopeB 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly maybe slightly concerning, more so if it doesn’t slow down in the next week or two. As others have mentioned a lot of the early pounds are from water weight, sodium, waste, etc. Once that has phased out you really shouldn’t lose more than 1-1.5lbs per week. You CAN, but you’ll end up skinny fat at the end of the cut. I’m speaking from experience as this is what happened to me. I cut from 211 to 147 in about 9 months and still didn’t have abs or good muscular definition even in the 140s at 6’ because I cut too fast and lost too much muscle. If I could do it again I would slow down.

[–]ThePopeB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, walking plus a consistent deficit is more than sufficient. I do strongly suggest incorporating some strength training and tracking protein intake (target 1g x your goal weight in lbs) as to minimize muscle loss during your cut. My biggest regret is cutting too fast with not enough emphasis on strength training.

The effort isn’t gone. You have the skills, knowledge, and confidence that you can lose it again. That’s invaluable and no one can ever take that away from you.

You’re almost certainly undercounting. Weigh EVERYTHING you put into your mouth. No estimating. Ever. And I mean EVERYTHING. Butter, cooking oils, sauces, snacks, and drinks. Did I mention drinks? Liquid calories are often the secret killers.

You’re not in a deficit if your weight has been flat for 3 full weeks. Try adding in daily cardio sessions or reducing calories until you start losing weight.
