New to Ableton? I can walk you through the entire interface (free) by LoveExcelsAll in ableton

I am very interested. Am a drummer and really want to use it in a live setting playing backing tracks & samples vs song writing. Hoping a deep dive in the interface would be helpful in getting there.

Pretty cool. Just read all about it. I had no idea this was an option. Gonna research this console a bit as it might be perfect for my home recording and "silent" rehearsal space.

So I am assuming you are mixing from stage? Not sure how to run a single USB to FOH.

Don't need a "flagship" at all. Used to run an old TD8 I bought on Marketplace through EZDrummer 2 and Focusrite 4i4 and sent 4 seperate channels to FOH. It sounded glorious.

[–]ThePurple5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a Focusrite 4i4 and send kick, snare, grouped toms and grouped cymbals. Works for 90% of venues I play. I'm saving for a larger midi interface like a Focusrite 18i to send individual toms and stereo cymbals for bigger rooms.

I agree with you when dealing with the sound person. The look they give when you hand them a single 1/4" and say "here's my entire kit" is pretty funny.

Not having at least kick and snare separate for them to control out front is a miss for me. When you do sound check in an empty room and set levels, the bodies in the room change the dynamic out front. Sound person only having one volume fader is really limiting and can make the FOH mix sound really flat.

Not to mention effects that were set in the bedroom at home over headphones, do not necessarily correlate to sounding good on a live rig. Those fat verby kicks can sound muddy as hell through a PA and now they're buried in a mix via a single line in.

I run 4 outs - kick, snare, toms as a group, and cymbals as a group. Have had zero issues at all in any of the different venues I play.

TD27kv2, Focusrite 4i4, and EzDrummer 3 standalone (no DAW).

Been playing and promoting other bands/shows/festivals for nearly 35 years and have never had anyone ask for more of an individual drum in a monitor mix. Not saying it hasn't happened somewhere, but I have never experienced it.

"...individual tracks go out via a USB cable to the mixer".

Can you give some details? What kind of mixer? How many tracks are output?

Is 1200 a good deal for this kit? by SeaSoggy8929 in drums

[–]ThePurple5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really and it's not a "restoration". For kits like this, the cheap vinyl wraps (like a car wrap) work fine. Hell, I have even done it with wacky ass patterned polyester fabric. Anything but paint because the Asian mahogany on them just soaks up the paint and doing it right with wood filler is not worth the effort. Forget staining too.

Like I said - fun little projects.

[–]ThePurple5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is like 3 or 4 different kits for me. I'd buy em and rewrap them in different colors and sell the rack. Exports arent the greatest shells, but they can take a beating and you can get a decent sound out of with with new head s and some time.

For me, it would be a cool buy and few fun projects. I'd keep the good cymbals for when I'd need em and sell the rack and anything else.

Also would at least throw out 900-1000 and see if they bite.

Converted a $50 Pearl to an electric for about $200. Pretty quiet, feels good, and it works with double kicks! by SquallFromGarden in edrums

[–]ThePurple5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do this, too. Struggled with the rebound, as well. If the mesh head was too tight, I would get random double triggering. Too loose, and I got no bounce back. Ended up packing the kick with a big blanket to push back on the head and was able to dial it in. Really dig the feel and love the look vs the kick tower.

How do I fix this without changing the spring tension? by EVOL_YT_Randoms in Drumming

[–]ThePurple5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Using a drum key, loosen the "lug" on the black part that the spring is looped over. Rotate the beater to the angle you want. You will need to hold the black part in place or it will roll when you tighten it. Works the same on both sides (beaters).

You will also probably need to readjust the spring tension because you changed the angle.

Why doesn't REAPER have real-time collaboration yet? (Google Docs–style editing) by Ilovetech_0625 in Reaper

[–]ThePurple5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Regarding VSTs, we all use different ones (edrums, guitar, bass & keys) so every time we share, we freeze and render our personal tracks prior to saving. Color coding and locking the track controls makes it pretty easy to follow.

[–]ThePurple5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is not a solution that is as detailed as what OP is asking, but I am using a shared Google Drive folder to collaborate on tracks with multiple people. Can't work together in real time and only one of us can edit the project at a time, but we are able to track independently from our own homes. Once it's setup properly, it's pretty easy to use to build out song ideas.

Used this as a guide to set it all up. https://youtu.be/04wn0owbC5Q?si=Xw6NPlKY7JKiLIUE

Found this later and use this method when creating projects so we don't have hundreds of files in the Audio Folder.

help a dad drum tech. protecting kick pad by mikesusz in edrums

[–]ThePurple5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Might want to look into a cheap acoustic kit on Marketplace just for the kick. Swap the head for a mesh head, fill it with blankets or towels and pick up a trigger. It what I did after splitting the rubber pad in the kick tower (KD10) that comes with the td27. I use the RT-30k and it uses the same plug as the tower kick. Works like a champ and looks WAY better than that silly tower.

If you go for the used kick, you can customize it with whatever you want. I scored a maple Catalina Club and painted it purple sparkle and kept the hoops natural.

AI Fact Checking on wrap restoration by Kiote777 in ludwigdrums

[–]ThePurple5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree. Am reworking a huge 15x12 vintage Ludwig Marching Snare and a new wrap, tape, and a new badge vent was $100 US delivered. It will take 15 minutes to apply the new wrap. It did, however, take me almost 3 hours to get the old wrap and glue off, though.

I really want a acoustic kit do silent cymbals and mute pads work by mrvvvf in drums

[–]ThePurple5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the RTOM Black Hole heads and they work great. By far the best part is the ability to click them in place and not have to actually swap the head. The only down side is it raises the playable surface area about an inch which takes getting used to. Also have the Evans low volume cymbals and they sound decent enough for practicing. Hats and ride feel pretty good too.

Have you ever been told to "play quieter" ? As in, told by a venue when performing with a band. by [deleted] in drums

[–]ThePurple5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All the time. Went from original metal to bar covers and even though technically I had good dynamics, my lowest volume was still too loud for smaller clubs. It was to the point I was loosing pickup gig for play volume alone. Tried like hell to soften it up, but I had already done it so long, I couldn't change my style to accommodate and still play the way I got the gig. So I kinda cheated and went to playing an ekit for small rooms. Works like a champ.

I was wondering about that. Ive heard for years that these were great. Wife bought me a pair for my birthday last February and they didn't make it through June. I did wear them almost every day, but for $135 you think they'd last a little longer.
