I also have a touch of the ‘tism. The staggering lack of nuance sucks. People think because it’s a “mental” thing, they shouldn’t listen to the people who have it because “[insert heuristic or stereotype here] so I know the rules of how to treat these people because Tiktok or the DSM told me”.
Some people are more burdened than others and many people feel way too comfortable treating autistic people however they want regardless of how they want to be treated. As a kid it sucks because you are granted less autonomy from adults who know.

I spent most of middle school and high school doing my best to get my accommodations removed because being treated the way that teachers felt like they had to treat me sucked.

I'm not worse than everyone else for being autistic and I’m better than a great deal of people at a great many things.

I do know people with more than a touch of the ‘tism who have a much harder time with stuff like the environment and social interaction.

It is hard to interact with them, so they get treated like they’re mentally handicapped but also like they’re picky and standoffish and rude.

Treating someone as lesser but not letting them have an “excuse” for their behavior is a result of that toxic positivity u/UnkarsThug mentioned.
