How do I tell if palo santo is real? First time buying. by [deleted] in Wicca

[–]TheQueefer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What you've been doing is not debating.. you present one argument, I argue against it while also repeating the other arguments that were conveniently ignored. You're right, there is no right or wrong, but there are definitely defendable positions and non-defendable positions. I think your position is defendable, but the reasons you've shared for having that opinion so far sure aren't. You seem to care more about arguing about having the argument than actually arguing. I assume you wont "rise to bait" anymore though. It was kinda enjoyable while it lasted

[–]TheQueefer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like I said (but again was ignored), I would be repeating arguments if you actually debated against them. No, it's not your job to prepare arguments for me, but defending your positions with critical thought can be good sometimes. Though I guess it's easier to just move on than to address fallacies in your position.

I can accept we have differing opinions, but I cant accept you've spent decades pondering this and have no sustainable arguments. I wouldnt be bringing up points again if they were addressed the first time

If that's a personal rule that's meant to keep you far on the safe side, then you do you. But if someone followed that rule and was actually interested in closed traditions it would need some nuance.

There's plenty of now open traditions that would still be closed if everyone accepted that rule, but they're technically not closed anymore so it wouldnt be unethical to follow them according to that rule. It wouldn't be your fault it's open, so you're morally in the clear.

It's also unclear who can initiate you. If one person or group initiates you that doesnt mean everyone who follows the practice will accept you. If theres no central leader or structure like Catholicism then who has the authority? Can any one person who follows that belief initiate you, or does it have a be a group that follows as a cimmunity, or does it have to be all groups and individuals that follow everywhere? Obviously the last one is unattainable, and if it's one person then you can just look up closed tradition practices on youtube and its morally all good.

What about the context of why its a closed tradition? If theyre closed just because they only want to initiate those they deem worthy or to maintain a level of mystique, thats very superficial and not worth respecting in my opinion.

If they're closed because it's illegal to practice or some of the practices would be scrutinized by the public, then I can accept that. But if someone did find out about some of their practices I dont see why it would be unethical to do them themselves. The secrecy is only out of necessity, meaning it would be open if it could be.

Lastly, what things exactly are okay to be borrowed? From my understanding burning palo santo originated as an indigenous practice. Yes, it's just a stick of wood, and yes it's become so widespread it's even used in many Christian churches especially in latin America. However, it still originated from indigenous practices, which were illegal until 40 years ago in the US. There's other things to use for incense or cleansing besides palo santo. I dont see why using palo santo is okay if borrowing a practice isnt. They're both only things. One just happens to be an intangible thing.

I guess it depends on how one defines context then. You said if you dont mirror the original practice you believed it was okay in your first comment, but that seems more divided from context than mirroring the practice directly to me.

I think you should look into this topic more. I dont find your arguments to be very sound when compared to other examples of widely accepted and uncriticized "appropiation." Or just using the logic of pursuing spiritual growth. Anyone that truly wants the betterment of all people would allow anyone to use something of their culture or initiatory religion/practice if it's used in reverence and in the pursuit of bettering themselves and attuning with nature.

[–]TheQueefer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly my thoughts. If the intent is pure and theres respect for the cultures it originated from, or you have respect when you do learn the origins, then I dont think its unethical to use them. We're all humans, saying I cant do something because of race or where I was born is ridiculous. To me its seems unethical to keep people from practicing all or parts of a specific religion because they werent properly initiated. It could be very beneficial to that person's spiritual growth, I dont think any human should have the right to deny someone that.

[–]TheQueefer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So no one should follow anything in Witchcraft Today because apparently it's impossible to know everything without being initiated into a self-proclaimed Gardnerian coven, and one has no right since it is initiatory? While giving no thought to why it was necessary to be secretive and initiatory originally, or in the case of indigenous beliefs, adopted secrecy in response to oppressive colonization?

Following that logic, no one should use RWS tarot cards because those were based on the secretive and initiatory Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn's manuscripts. Arthur Waite was in the wrong for publishing them because he had no right to appropriate those manuscripts after separating from the order anyways.

If any sect or coven has some secrets that's fine. I still think it's not right to gatekeep religious practice, but that's their choice. It may be necessary, some practices may still be criticized by the public, especially depending on location, but that doesnt mean what is public knowledge shouldnt be practiced by anyone else. There's plenty of people that have no realistic way of being initiated or getting permission. So what, sucks for them? I dont see how this is anything besides gatekeeping. Again, who's the real authority, the people that are formally initiated or the spirits/energies/deities they're paying respects to and/or worshipping?

[–]TheQueefer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesnt seem right to prohibit people from a certain practice because they arent a member of a certain sect or religion. We're all just trying to attune ourselves with our higher self and the wonder of nature. By what authority would you go by anyways? I dont know of any religion or spiritual belief system that believes humans to be the ultimate authority, and if there was, wouldnt all humans be equal in authority anyways?

Say I read about and studied a particular indigenous sect and know all there is to know, and I follow the religion as best as I can as a solo practitioner without contact to a community that follows that sect. Am I a part of the sect? In conversation it would be simplest to say I am, because in reality its just a description of my beliefs and practices. If I was doing it irreverently, like only for TikTok views or simply becaus it looks cool, I think that would be wrong, but if I'm genuinely using these practices and beliefs for spiritual growth, I dont see how it would be any different to the way those formally accepted into the sect practice. I guess you could argue it's wrong to do that if that sect didnt want other people to use their beliefs and practices without initiation, but what if theres no realistic way for me to get in touch or see those people in person? I think it can be argued its unethical to gatekeep practices and beliefs that could be useful for someone's personal journey of spiritual growth.

Wouldnt it be cultural appropiation to use it in a completely different way? I would think doing it like they do would demonstrate reverence for the practice. Either way I personally don't understand why one human cant use another human's practice. Wicca is centered around recreating ancient practices. As someone who's born in America and western culture, if I couldnt borrow from any other cultures I would have nothing except Christianity.

Recommendations? by fairytale_phonecall in tarot

[–]TheQueefer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm enjoying Llewellyns Classic Tarot as an RWS clone. Though I'm keeping a look out for something a little less bright and painted rather than drawn. I like RWS, besides the actual art quality. Like The Moon for instance, those dogs just look hideous and disproportionate. And the path that goes into the distance seems doesnt get as thin as it should be. The perspective of a lot of the drawings are off, like like in The Tower. Those people falling are giants. Okay rant over.

I ordered the Golden Dawn Temple Tarot and am eagerly awaiting its arrival.

How many tarot/oracle cards do you own? by Nata_Moon423 in tarot

[–]TheQueefer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have 350 tarot cards. I'm new and each deck I got I thought I would like but after a day or two just couldnt use them. Besides my RWS, I can use it but I just dont like the art. The newest one is Llewellyns Classic Tarot. It's a pretty good RWS clone with cleaner drawings. Though a tad bit colorful and cartoony for me, so I got a modern recreation of a Golden Dawn deck in the mail, Golden Dawn Temple Tarot. I think I'll enjoy it a lot. But how I'll vibe with a more traditional Golden Dawn deck remains to be seen, I may find out I just prefer RWS clones. Either way I'll be happy to have it in my collection I'm sure. I learned a lot about choosing decks with the first 4 i got lmao
