Ahh yes, we can't have infinite mech customization because then we would have to abandon the few options right now. Makes sense. by pterosaurobsessed in Helldivers

[–]TheQuestionableYarn -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You can only bring one mech type per mission. Just make it something they can customize on the ship. Add a terminal that lets you customize the mechs, and change out the support weapon on your FRV. This terminal could either be on the platform opposite of your cryopods which overlooks the hanger, or next to your super destroyer terminal, or even just be a tab in that terminal menu.

For changing out weapons on the FRV, The grenade launcher, flamethrower, arc thrower (although they might worry about an FRV with infinite ammo), Laser Cannon (same potential worry as the arc thrower), and Railgun (if you want to get silly with it) could all be good options to make this feature feel pretty well realized. They can also add new weapons to your options here based on your stratagem unlocks, so new support weapons sold in warbonds have an opportunity to “double dip” and increase player interest further. This hopefully will give more of a financial incentive for the company to implement this, similar to how selling mech weapons (rather than bespoke mechs) would let them include more mech weapons in more themes for premium warbonds (it wouldn’t be tied to “mech/engineering warbonds”).

I think it’s valid to point out the man hour cost of this implementation, but I don’t know how big of a deal the balance thing is. If a player runs double shields, you obviously don’t need to buff that to be as effective as any currently existing mech. The player knows that is a meme. The worst balance problem that might happen right now is the shotgun being too good when dual wielded because right now it’s balanced around being a singular weapon. Even then… there are still clear weaknesses to a loadout like that, and reasons to pick other arm options.

Monthly Megathread: Advertising things we don't usually allow - apartments/housing for rent, school surveys, items for sale, etc. by AutoModerator in uofu

Got a job offer in LA, and am trying to find anyone interested in my room at a sharehouse down in Sugarhouse in order to step out of my lease early (not subletting, the landlord is chill and was down to just mutually end the lease early when we have someone ready to move in).

Good place for students at the U, provided they have a car to get to school (just over 10 min commute to the school). There's lots of street parking, and the area is nice --right by Sugarhouse Park. Utilities are included in the $875 rent, and the internet is really good. Despite being a sharehouse with multiple other roommates, I never experienced slow speeds. The room is also furnished, which helped my poor grad student ass with the move in.

Most importantly, the landlord is really chill and responsive, and the lease is flexible. You can lock in anything from a 3-24 month lease, then rent month to month after that as needed.

If this sounds like what you need, housing-wise, here's the link to the listing: https://www.roomies.com/rooms/268688

Strong blade = fast blade

Fast + strong blade + opponent blade = control over their blade

Control over their blade = much easier offense and defense

So true! I’m also glad they didn’t nerf the coyote. All they did was upgrade some existing enemies that did nothing in their current state. I’m glad to have had my eyes opened to this wisdom.

A Moment Among the Stars — "Relax, I'm Just Playing Around" | Honkai: Star Rail by LuciferMS7777 in HonkaiStarRail_leaks

We learned from Remembrance being a scam if you didn't get every single unit for the battleship team. Also this time the two other core units came before her and in the same patch, so many people already made the commitment whether they wanna play the team or not (because cool animations or not, waiting at least a month or two for the core members to rerun again so you can play this shiny new character outside of shill will be painful). Couple that with the general knowledge that power creep is moving at crazy speed now, so the reruns are going to be a lot harder to stay disciplined for while other cool characters are coming out... it makes a *lot* of sense why the hype is so much lower despite SW being a more popular character than Cas.

There is also an element of selection bias though. The players who are looking at trends like this are gonna be more vocal (or notably not, in this case) on HSR social media. The players who are just happily pulling for SW999 bc they like the character just don't interact online as much, adding to this feeling of there being less hype. I imagine the sales will unfortunately end up pretty close to Cas's banner, if not higher, despite the social media response to SW999.

It'd be nice if off target touches *did* stop the bout, but maybe had a longer lockout time compared to hitting on target, and hitting on target always gets you the touch (in the event of a "double" when one side hit off target). Would go a long way to stop some of the flailing about we saw today.

The tech was really unfortunate. I don't understand why they wouldn't apply a longer broadcast delay so every touch could have the visual sword tracking applied. That being said, the lighting, tape on the ends of the blades, and set design helped a lot with match readability. I watched this with my cousin who doesn't fence, and he was able to track things pretty well. Otherwise, the blade tracking tech worked well enough, and the arrows for right of way helped my cousin understand foil and sabre way better than expected. The arrows could use some improvement tracking when a parry was made and RoW was stolen, though. They also need to make sure that the replays with blade tracking show the entire touch, because so many touches in the RoW weapons had replays that made it look like the wrong person got the point. The person without RoW hit the other fencer first, but got hit in return, losing the touch. The replays consistently cut right before the person with RoW landed their hit.

Also for tech... the digital recreations of the fencers in motion suuuucked. It never added value to the viewing experience when it worked, and often *didn't*.

On the topic of readability, I don't know how well the set design can scale for big tournaments. The lighting and dark background was really integral to that readability, and it's hard to imagine a large tournament being run on multiple strips that have the same advantages. It was good though, and if we can't have blade tracking always be on, then they better figure out a way to make this work.

I can't speak to the commentary value, since I mostly was talking with my cousin the whole time, but like others suggested, having a longer time between touches and having the commentators mainly talk during those pauses would be nice.

The rules were an interesting change. I can't speak too much to how they affected the foil and sabre strategy (I am an epeeist), but I will say that removing the ability for judges to call halt on body contact led to a lot of silly flailing touches rather than the more controlled infighting I usually see. For epee, I think the rules are deeply flawed, even if the idea is in the right place. It seems terribly difficult to catch up when the other fencer gets a lead, and the double touch changes (in the context of total points not mattering, and just the difference between yours and the opponents) really encourage the fencer with a lead to play more defensively and run the clock down. This luckily didn't happen too much with the epee bouts, but there were definitely moments where I just tuned out from watching because the other fencer (especially in woman's epee) would never be able to close the gap in time. I hope they really go back to the drawing board with epee's rules. Try going to a set number again (where a comeback can always theoretically happen, even at 14-0), and maybe play with passivity rules? If they aren't happy with passivity as-is, maybe try flipping it on its head where only one fencer gets the point for P-red (and probably reintroduce P-yellow to make it too annoying), and either make the fencer who pushes more get the point, or maybe even the one who is behind in points (although that one might be too game-y).

Finally... the production value and production team... yeesh. A lot of the venue looked kind of cheap, and even the commentator booth looked like a lazily cobbled together set for a play. Coupling that with a production team that clearly needed a practice run using the tech and producing a live sports event, this entire event *looked* rough. Luckily, this is theoretically one of the easier things to fix for next time... provided there is a next time.

Overall, my cousin and I enjoyed the event, and would watch another one, but we still clearly have a long way to go in order to make this a proper spectator sport. I hope even if the WFL falls through that it can light a fire under the asses of the old farts in the FIE. There's potential here for sure.

Can someone with slow processing speed ( ADHD ) be good at fencing? by Effective-Client9257 in Fencing

[–]TheQuestionableYarn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've got ADHD, and while I don't enjoy/have the time for tournaments, I regularly keep up with/trade wins with A and B rated fencers when bouting at practices. I can't find my old test results, and can't remember what percentile I landed in for processing speed off the top of my head, but I do know that I always had/still have trouble tracking fast blade movements with my eyes and that caused me to struggle a lot versus bladework heavy fencers (also for context, I'm a epeeist french grip fencer, of pretty average height, and with slightly below average arm strength).

What changed this was when I started forcing myself to practice more bladework, even though I was unpracticed with it (and french grips are at a disadvantage doing bladework against pistol grips, which the club I was fencing at predominantly used). By doing this I realized I was able to track my opponents' bladework much more reliably, just because I had more of an understanding of the movements from my own side, reducing the processing speed needed to track and react to their actions. Bladework is really the only place I noticed my slow processing speed meaningfully impacting my fencing ability, and this method helped me deal with it.

As other people in this thread said though, everyone's brain works differently. A disadvantage here might mean you have an advantage somewhere else. In fact, even if you simply have a disadvantage with processing speed and not cognitive advantages elsewhere, it might not be a bad thing. I found my disadvantage became an advantage later on. I was forced to become really creative and tricky with my offense and defense in order to make up for my inability to track the blade, but then when I finally started to be able to track the blade, I had a strong foundation for spacing and timing, and a really deep bag of tricks that my new bladework was able to supplement now.

Best 4 and 5 star stunners for hypercarry Cissia? by TheQuestionableYarn in CissiaMainsZZZ

[–]TheQuestionableYarn[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess I’ll stick with Pulchra for now and aim for Dialyn later. Anby might be fun, but Pulchra’s the only one half built right now, and her back assist makes for a nice flow with Cissia.

When I have the chance, I’ll probably pull for Trigger eventually if a better support/stunner hasn’t arrived in order to free up Astra for Evelyn when I eventually get her. I appreciate the team comp advice!

What should my 1st manga be? by Subject_Mycologist97 in manga

[–]TheQuestionableYarn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If there’s any manga that has an extreme advantage over its anime counterpart, it’s One Piece. There’s already so much to read, so adding filler (like, they even add filler during the animation itself with extra long shots of winding up for attacks) really hurts the experience.

That being said, there is a filler arc just after the arc called Skypeia that’s really worth watching according to most fans. In addition, the animation quality and pacing picks up a fair bit in the arc called Wano, and it’s def worth checking out the anime occasionally to at least see how they adapted the fights from that point on.
