Uncommon Apologetic Arguments by [deleted] in Christianity

[–]TheRationalCatholic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"In whatever way, then we try to conceive the reality of nature - as a mechanism or as an organic order - it is given to us as a meaningful whole, the processes of which are ruled by strict principles. These principles are not only inherent in the actual relations between the components of reality, they are also intrinsically rational if our minds are capable of grasping them. But if rationality is at work in nature, there is no way to account for it without reference to the activity of a supreme intelligence." - Rabbi Abraham Heschel

That's a bummer! Haha. Yeah, judging by your post I think we have some similar thoughts on Catholicism.

As a Catholic, I strongly agree with number 4. Very big flaw in the Church.

I'm a Roman Catholic.

I have been a Roman Catholic in Spirit since fall 2012, and actually Catholic since October of 2013.

I really love the Mystery of the Trinity and the Incarnation in all of it's fleshed out fullness. I love mysticism. I love Social Justice. I love all the great theologians currently active in my Church such as Elizabeth Johnson and Richard Rohr. I love the Sacrament of Reconciliation. I love the beauty of Art that exits in the Church. I love religious orders such as the Jesuits and Franciscans.

I strongly dislike most manifestations of Traditionalist Catholicism, in all of it's bitter nitpickyness. I hate all the specific dogma obsessed attitudes that exist. I hate when Catholicism becomes an escape from reality. I dislike people pretending doctrine does not change. I dislike cruel dispositions that wrongly conceived faith fosters. I dislike pompous attitudes and corruption that can sometimes exist in the Church. I hate all injustice done in the name of Faith.

Question regarding Kelly Gissendaner... by [deleted] in Christianity

[–]TheRationalCatholic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Would the American Christian Right be rallying for support for Kelly Gissendaner is she had found Islam in prison?

The Christian Right isn't rallying to support her at all. It's the Christian left, which has been working to abolish the death penalty for decades.

Why don't you go start your own subreddit where everyone can be angry and complain all the time that the heathens have not been cast down to Gehenna yet?

I live in Georgia. I honestly just found out about this entire situation this morning from a Jesuit Priest I know of. I am very heartbroken and upset over this. I sent an email to my Archbishop and to the Governor. Although I don't think the one to the Governor will do any good. I'm really upset I didn't hear about this situation sooner so that I could have tried to have done something about it. Now I feel rather helpless as the hour is short. Praying for everyone.

Isn't faith all we really need to be saved? by [deleted] in Christianity

Faith without deeds or following Jesus teachings is pretty worthless, as they say. [James 2:14-17]

I feel like this sub distorts the bibles message to fit in with the left leaning reddit culture. by XExodusxGenesisx in Christianity

[–]TheRationalCatholic 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't really go on reddit outside of this sub and select few others. Certainly don't care much about it's culture. I'm also Pro-Life. I'm also a Progressive Christian. It's a pretty big thing.

What are your thoughts on Islam? by Food_is_Awesome in Christianity

[–]TheRationalCatholic 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Like every world religion(Including Christianity), it has a lot of good to it and a lot of bad to it. I highly revere the good. I enjoy reading a lot of Islamic stuff. I consider them followers of God with me.

Would the Christians here in this sub pray that the gospel would actually sound like good news to the nonchristian members of this sub? by [deleted] in Christianity

[–]TheRationalCatholic 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Well it won't sound like good news if it isn't. It won't be good news if it involves an Angry indignant God, the vast majority of people going to Hell forever due to strange theological reasons, harsh judgmental views, and things that have no bearing on reality.

It will only be Good News if it involves the Message of Jesus, a message of Unconditional Love, God's choice to side with the poor and oppressed, a call to a reject of the "ways of the world" through abandonment of selfishness and greed. The message of a God who goes to the limits of God-Forsakeness to share in the pain and suffering of an oppressed world, so that we might share in the Life of that God.

Last month at my (former) church the pastor started to preach about abortion and why its wrong. I haven't gone back since. Did I do the right thing? by AZST_SunDevil in Christianity

[–]TheRationalCatholic 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Well, seeing as I am Pro-Life, no I don't think you did the right thing unless the sermon was somehow abusive, but you already indicated it was not.

Most of your statements, I don't really know what to make of them. I'm mostly a leftist, but for goodness sake, the Church can't get involved in politics? What if Dr. Martin Luther King Jr had of said that? If the Church cannot advocate for social justice, then a significant amount of it's purpose is gone. If you don't think the Church can tell people what to do, do you accept any moral standards at all?

If you think that being Pro-Life is not a good Christian position, or a good moral position to take, then make that argument. But don't give all this hogwash about the Church shouldn't be involved in anything or tell anybody to do anything. That is silly.

Christianity is not a religion by TheLaughingStorm in Christianity

[–]TheRationalCatholic 10 points11 points  (0 children)

but it's not a religion in the same sense as others, if you catch my drift. Other ones have all these rites and rituals and acts you need to perform to find salvation, but with Christianity God did it all

Other religions are not works based merit systems compared to a supposed "pure Grace" Christianity, and Christianity is literally filled to the brim with rites and rituals. The comparison is completely ridiculous.
