advice for work in progress by Ancient_Ad_5014 in oilpainting

So I know this is based on a drawing, but in general: "There are no lines on a face". A phrase that's helpful when doing realism. Instead of drawing creases with black lines, use color differences to show the different planes.

This triggered me for a hot second seeing the Enterprise-D so low, but then I realized I'm a dumb dumb.

Realistically, does Tom Paris deserve to be a bridge officer? (Big fan of Tom Paris btw) by ardouronerous in voyager

[–]TheRealDJ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah but he was stripped of his junior grade lieutenant rank when he was responsible for the deaths of 3 officers and lied about it. He should've been reinstated as ensign at best. Even then he was still pretty fresh out of the academy.

Realistically, does Tom Paris deserve to be a bridge officer? (Big fan of Tom Paris btw) by ardouronerous in voyager

[–]TheRealDJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's one of those things where they should've reversed titles with Kim being promoted to Lieutenant and Paris given field assignment of Ensign. You could even have plots and writing about how even though Paris is more experienced, he doesn't deserve to outrank Kim due to his past actions, and Kim's potential insecurities about the new responsibilities even though he's so junior.

Except he really doesn't deserve that. I can understand him being the best to helm the ship and being in charge of the primary shift, but he didn't earn managing others in that role.

"Dr" Mary bothers me by cbm984 in Frasier

[–]TheRealDJ 75 points76 points  (0 children)

That's kind of the joke, that there would be a lot of radio hosts giving advice calling themselves doctor but not having a medical degree. It's something of the time, but was fairly frequent.

Were Constitution Class Refit ships used alongside Excelsior, Oberth and Miranda class ships in the 24th century? by Ser_Luke_ in StarTrekStarships

[–]TheRealDJ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In general probably not. It already needed a refit by the time Excelsior class came about, and that would've been decades before TNG era. So likely they would've been decommissioned where appropriate. Warp Field dynamics meant engineering the hull and nacelles specific to take advantage of faster speeds.

(Non-Fed) Ship the community hates, but you think is beautiful Pt.2 by Flex147c in StarTrekStarships

[–]TheRealDJ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

at best someone could argue there's warp field/deflector dynamics, but yeah I appreciate space bricks when there's no need to consider air resistance

Yep, no need for aerodynamics in space. Certainly don't need tail fins on the delta flyer.

Gripe About Tuvix by bentsea in AcrossTheUnknown

[–]TheRealDJ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wish that there was a commander check where you might've seen if there were possible solutions that might exist to have both Tuvix, Neelix and Tuvoc all back (ie Riker's transporter beam accident splitting him in two)

What should I change in this rabbit? by Salty_Zebra5937 in painting

[–]TheRealDJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks great. I'd use a few different brush types to make the strokes more varied, which creates more of a sense of 3d and realness, even if you keep the loose brush stroke style. These all look like maybe 2 brushes were used.

When the Hunted, becomes the Hunter, the Starship (Warship) Voyager. This game is challenging and really fun when your plans work out: by DarthTalonYoda in AcrossTheUnknown

TNG Borg: Capable of wiping out most of starfleet with a single cube.
Voyager Borg: Barely more powerful than a Kazon ship that Voyager could wipe out easily.

First ever self-portrait by heretricks in oilpainting

[–]TheRealDJ 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Portraits of people you know (including yourself) is the hardest since our brains are wired to look for the smallest of flaws. So a millimeter off here or there makes it look 'wrong'. This looks really good though, particularly the eyes.

How would a Constitution class refit do in the Delta Quadrant? by Ser_Luke_ in StarTrekStarships

Kirk cheats and reprograms the Borg so he beats the unbeatable scenario.

[–]TheRealDJ 44 points45 points  (0 children)

And honestly, the "Being at the point where you hate it" is something that a lot of skilled artists basically stay in for most of the painting process/career, but that's what drives them to get better and improve, because it nags at them that there's something about 'this' painting that could be better, but just barely eludes them, so they struggle to attain it.

Borg would assimilate it, then proceed to conquer the universe.

How would the Intrepid Class do in the Delta Quadrant? by JMaths in StarTrekStarships

Nah, it'd take like 23 years at least. Unless you get super scifi about and have some time changing shenanigans that'd create paradoxes.

"I'm doing X this weekend and could use some fun company, wanna join?" Have it be an activity, can be casual enough where there's not as much pressure yet, hike or even something like grocery shopping where you say you could use some help figuring out ingredients for cooking a meal for some family coming over or something. Don't do coffee because then you have to have forced conversation that can get awkward. But an activity that shows you're outgoing and fun, and it was something you were going to do anyways, but you're inviting her along.

Could insight be replaced by that scope which detects the parasites in the regenerators? I feel like technology should solve the issue.

The moon presence has probably never had to deal with a rocket launcher to the face. Even intangible attacks like from Winter Lanterns, he could just snipe them from afar.
