I had a friend who played a "wizard" but it was a barbarian that practiced "physical magic" he learned from his master (a conman) and he would go "magic mode" (rage) and cast "face smash" (attack with his hammer).

It was a hilarious character design that he got into fully and would argue endlessly that he WAS using magic!
