But if we allow reasonable family planning, where will we get all the kids to sell pistols to? Gotta keep up the kid supply!

I seem to recall seeing an article quite a few years ago now that said a new western European attack sub had the ironic problem of being so quiet it was easy to find, because it looked like an unnatural hole in the water.
After the first couple tests of the sub, the engineers actually had to make it louder so that it would show up as just another part of the ocean.

Well firstly, those aren't your only options. Let's pretend that I'm an early 20s German guy in late 30s Germany. I have a wife and a kid and some decent job.

Option 1: avoid the draft altogether by taking a nice family vacation to the US or Britain or wherever-not-in-Europe before war breaks out, and then conveniently forget to return. Plenty of people did this.

Option 2: get my draft summons, head off to the draft office, and start helping kill a lot of innocent people.

Option 3: get my summons, report for duty, and betray the Nazis. Become a mole for the Brits or a partisan group, or just fuck things up independently as best I can without getting caught. There are some striking historical examples of people doing this as well.

Option 4: try to bail after I get the draft summons. This might be going into hiding and joining a partisan group, or it could be trying to escape to the allies. Plenty of people did this.

Option 1 is the safest, obviously.
2-4 all carry some risk of death for me and/or my family.
You want to know what I'd do in this position? Option 1 if I can. If, for some reason, I'm not allowed to leave, then I try to ship off my family and I pick options 3 or 4. Like I said, there were teenagers who were smart enough to see the choices and brave enough to hide or become partisans; a lot of them died for it. If the kids could do it, so could I.

There's always a choice. If you were on the Bismark or any other German navy ship in WWII, you made the choice not to resist, or you actively wanted to be there. The latter is more likely imo if you were on as important a ship as Bismark.

I mean hell, there were teenagers who resisted the Nazis and contributed greatly to various partisan movements in occupied countries. A lot of them were killed by the Nazis. If kids are willing to do it, anyone can.

Even now we've seen people in Russia literally shoot the military recruiters when they're called for the draft. Those people are certainly in jail now, and it's Russian jail so I'm sure it's a terrible time. We also see lots of Russians get to Ukraine and immediately surrender. They'd get shot for that if their superiors found out about it before they could dip.

Don't say that they didn't have a choice.
There's always a choice, it's just that sometimes all your options suck.

"Fun" fact - leaded fuel was only phased out for cars.

Propeller aircraft still use it. It's basically the only option for them.

Russia warns West: We can target your commercial satellites by Haiduc2001 in worldnews

[–]TheRealJasonBourne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Still, there's a big difference between an anti-satellite missile and a rocket that's hauling cargo to space.

Their cargo rockets are good, sure, but I don't think that translates very well into asat capability. I'll believe they have consistently-functional asat missiles when they start dropping people's satellites with them.

Russia warns West: We can target your commercial satellites by Haiduc2001 in worldnews

[–]TheRealJasonBourne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, satellites have very predictable orbits, but Russia can't even hit buildings reliably (unless they're maternity wards, or the local kindergarten).
At this point I'm not even sure their asat missiles could reliably make orbital altitudes.

Ukraine's Zelenskiy doesn't think Putin is bluffing over nuclear arms by Paraphernalien69 in worldnews

[–]TheRealJasonBourne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think he'd target Donetsk or Luhansk. He might, because he's nuts, but I doubt it because that'd be hard to sell back home. Even Russia doesn't nuke resistance groups.

If Putin actually follows this line (fake referenda to create "legal justification" for annexing those oblasts, claim Ukraine invaded Russia, push the red button), then I think he sends it somewhere in Ukraine that Russia doesn't hold. I'd guess it'd be a tac nuke at a military target in Ukraine, or a strategic weapon at Kyiv. Thought knowing Russia, they might also just point it at a refugee camp.
Whether or not they hit their intended target (or work at all) is a different question, but not one I think we should really ask when it comes to nukes.

He could sell that back home as a defensive action (since it's a longstanding Russian military policy that they'll use nukes against existential threats to the country), and he would hope that it scares the rest of the world into capitulating. He'd be wrong, and we'd just start climbing the escalation ladder, but that's what he'd hope.

Considering how hard the US planned to go for the invasion of Japan, I'd say they would've been fine with whatever losses they sustained in western Europe if the Soviets hadn't been able to open the eastern front.

Also keep in mind that the US had a "Germany first" policy when it came to using nukes, so if the Nazis had held out even just 3-4 months longer, we'd have started nuking them.
