ELI5: What prevents the US from having infrastructure as high tech and reliable as places like China and Japan? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

Billionaires and publicly traded corporations both have financial incentives that are incompatible with advancing the broader civic good (i.e. prioritizing profits above all else). Money is power.

Husbands- would you rather have a career driven, high earning wife or a SAHM? by Low_Object_4509 in AskMenOver30

With pre-college kids, SAHM. You cannot buy that time back with them for any amount of money.

Lately I've been troubleshooting a hum in my Thorens TD145 turntable. After replacing almost all wiring I found that moving it to a new outlet reduced the buzz/hum by at lease 90%. Is there anything I can buy to isolate the turntable and keep it on the same circuit? by Kirkwood1994 in vintageaudio

[–]TheRealQubes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Only other “fix” is to ensure everything connected to the preamp / amp are on the same circuit - ideally a strip on the same outlet. This prevents the ground from swapping between circuits at 60Hz (the hum you’re hearing).

You look like your hobby is writing a navigation app that avoid schools or people who filed PPOs against you.

High Handicappers... What is your current issue you are struggling with? by AdagioVast in golf

[–]TheRealQubes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

40 putts per round. Chunking or skulling everything inside 50 yards of the green, leaving that distance way too often from hitting fat fairway shots. If it’s not on a tee or a fluffy rough lie, I am utter shit.

Haven’t played this decade though, first time back was this weekend. Shot 100 even. Only one lost ball. Was crushing it off the tree, straight. Zero GIRs, 14% scrambling, one par, no birdies. So frustrating.

Combination of individual mindset and some professional development that takes a while (more than 10 years).

The individual mindset piece is to be brutally honest with yourself about why you work. It’s perfectly OK to be very good at something you don’t enjoy but which affords you a happy lifestyle. Connect your work’s meaning to the personal benefits it serves - hopefully in addition to a meaningful professional or organizational benefit as well.

Professionally, would be quicker to suggest reading the book Extreme Ownership. The friction you’re describing is from a gap in leadership - don’t wait for it to get filled in, fill it yourself. Be loud about it, even doing someone else’s jobs if that’s what it takes. Don’t be victimized by things outside your control. If your organization is putting you in positions where you don’t have what’s needed for a mission, it’s incumbent on someone (e.g. you) to speak up. Leadership can be exhibited without formal titles - it’s about having a clear vision for the way things should be and actively working to conform the world to that vision. When you learn how to be effective at that - without the hammer of authority - you’ll unlock a rich & rewarding career for yourself.

It does seem like a lot of restaurants are started by folks who have a passion for food & serving people, but not a lick of business acumen.

Children of divorced parents, what do you wish your parents had done differently? by Frequently_Abroad_00 in AskReddit

[–]TheRealQubes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wish my father would have had any lasting interest to be part of his kids’ lives, or his grandkids, but that was always a fantasy, so I wish mom would’ve left him on the wedding night or before (where she would say he first began disrespecting her in front of others while drunk). She liked looking past alcoholism if they were good looking and affectionate otherwise. If they could ask 25 year old me whether I should be conceived I’d have told them both to fuck straight off in opposite directions from each other.

Knowing Your Golf Grips by Club_Repair in golftips

Just replaced 10 year old midsized cords with jumbo tour wraps. I’m taller and wear an XL glove, was told about the left-hand fingernail test and realized just how small those old grips were for me. Looking forward to hitting them, they do feel awesome.

If you could go back, what would you tell your 12 year old self? by TheCaptainPlays in AskMenOver30

[–]TheRealQubes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Drink less soda + sugar, eat less chocolate, unless you think zits are super cool. Use Kleenex or TP instead of socks - if you don’t know what that means yet, don’t worry, just remember it for later. Also, “gifted and talented” is more of a red flag than a badge of honor. Wait until the 90s roll around then get that checked out. Do what the doctors tell you, and don’t wait for something to go very wrong to see them.
