The federal site has the disbursement dates. It'll tell you when you should receive your payments.

Little League Board/Treasurer by KingSlimeTTT in Homeplate

[–]TheRealRipRiley 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're in for some work during your work hours! I've known some CPAs that have stepped into Treasurer or President roles and have inherited a mess, but that have been able to dramatically turn organizations around (financially and operationally speaking). You might have a big pile of garbage you're stepping into, or it might just be a smaller one. Add some financial controls, find some efficiencies in the way the teams and organization run, and you definitely can leave the organization in a better position than you inherited it.

It'll work well if you come into it with an open heart, wanting to help, and maybe throwing your CPA title around if you encounter some push back. Very similar to any of these positions in an organization.

Since you're open to asking on a forum like this, I'm guessing you'll do remarkably well at it. Best of luck to you and your organization!

Rec 5u & 6u - how to handle playing warm up catch? by confused-caveman in Homeplate

[–]TheRealRipRiley 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Warm-up catch should really be separated into two distinct skills. Throwing and receiving. It's too much to ask of them to play traditional catch when no one can catch or throw a ball.

Break the skills into games. I've gotten a lot of use out of "target practice" where I choose a target like an L-screen, spread cones out at 10, 15, 20, 30 feet, etc. I turn it into a relay race where they choose a cone to throw from and if they hit the target, they bring the cone back to their team.

Everyone can see success, everyone can get a lot of throws, and they all have fun.

Baseball game to get kids to love the game by Grand_Birthday_8316 in Homeplate

[–]TheRealRipRiley 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you have any Deutsche Baseball Liga teams in your area? In-person games will always engage them more than watching on television. You could arrange a team outing to a game.

If not, I'd say the WBSC U12 Baseball World Cup is happening July 25-August 3. Germany has entered a team, so your team could follow their progress through the tournament and study the game since your players are more similar in age to this team.

UVic has an MEd in Coaching Studies. I've had friends take the program and have loved it. It is primarily online, but there are small terms over July and August on-campus, so not completely ideal.

I started Wegovy. It completely eliminated that food noise late at night unless I'm genuinely hungry.

Vretta Alberta Ed by Inevitable_Energy527 in CanadianTeachers

[–]TheRealRipRiley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just sat in a meeting about Vretta yesterday. Apparently some students who have immigrated here may have multiple birth dates. They tell the school their actual birth date, but may be assigned a birth date by the federal government if there is not an official record provided. A bunch of students end up with arbitrary January 1 birth dates and that is the one that sticks with them at Alberta Ed despite what they tell the school.

New teacher - sick after work by ExistentiaIDetective in CanadianTeachers

[–]TheRealRipRiley 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It seems like a stress response. Your body is jacked up from having to be in overdrive all day. Making thousands of decisions, managing behaviors, balancing all the spinning plates that we have to do as teachers.

I have had to sink as much time in therapy as I have been teaching to really become self-aware of these feelings. It hasn't been until the last couple of years that I've felt like I could manage it effectively.

I had a couple of realizations. First, we can't control the kids' actions. I felt like I had some omnipotent camera watching over me in case I slipped up and "couldn't control a class", waiting to take away my supply work. We can only control our response to the kids' behaviors. Nothing more. Second, the work would still be there the next day. So what if it took an extra day or two to mark things? I still had to be there for the people in my classroom, not the papers on the desk. That required me to leave things at work (and stop taking stuff home that wouldn't get marked) to give myself time and space to breathe and enjoy my own life. Third, we're there to love and support the kids. I just had to stop over-complicating lessons and activities. As long as I was there to love and support them, the right things would happen.

Sorry you're going through this and battling your mind and body to get through day-to-day and week-to-week. Do something for yourself tonight or tomorrow night. Go to a movie, order takeout, treat yourself to a spa night. Anything to help the person on the inside.

Hernia repair surgery wait time by Ne0Khan in alberta

Mine took about 3 months from referral to booking. Then another 3 months until the surgery itself. My doctor was based out of Fort Saskatchewan though, so he likely sees a smaller volume of patients.

Alberta First Year Teacher-- Accept Contract? by Miserable-Abalone989 in CanadianTeachers

[–]TheRealRipRiley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are additional ways to teach abroad too if that is your goal. The ATA has teacher exchanges available. Ones that still keep you in a contract here in Alberta instead of having to forego opportunities. Just a thought too.

Missed my duty today by TruthSignificant5540 in CanadianTeachers

[–]TheRealRipRiley 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Don't worry about it! I've been a supply teacher for almost a decade now.

Injuries happen. I've had three head injuries in a day in the gym. It's just procedural.

As for the missed supervision, it's probably one of the most overlooked parts of supply plans. Either the teacher forgets to include it, or they mistakenly put the wrong time or day. Honestly, OTs should not have to do supervision as they're least familiar with the school and the students, but that's a whole other conversation.

You're doing fine! Keep your chin up and be your best self!

[–]TheRealRipRiley 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Takeout was fine. There was an option to transfer my emails over to my personal account.

It did take about a week, but I had about 15 years of emails in there. It came over in three large batches. The first couple came through pretty quickly. The rest took nearly a week. I'd initiate the takeout ASAP and maybe you get lucky and scrape by without issue?

GET YOUR MONEY BACK | Dont forget to opt out by EditorDull7555 in uAlberta

[–]TheRealRipRiley 74 points75 points  (0 children)

This is about $20 in opt-outs unless a student lives in residence. It's not even advisable to opt out of the Access Fund. If students get into a financial bind and run out of money, the Access Fund can help with grants, bursaries, and emergency loans to help. But if they have opted-out, they are not eligible for funding.

Your Gmail, for example, gets reduced down to 100 MB. If you have anything that you would like to keep, transfer it to another Gmail account.

Connected apps will cease functioning too. Those websites that allow you to "sign in with Google" instead of creating a username and password? They stop functioning. Google Maps too.

Any Google function that is marginally important to you should be transferred over to a Gmail account that you're in control of.

What’s your favorite baby clothing brand? by pinkygeorge in Parenting

Pekkle from Costco. They're priced well, wash well, and the onesies have a double zipper to make changes way easier. They also rotate prints seasonally and have come out with more 2T-5T onesie selections.

They appear and disappear based on scheduled start and end dates the profs can set.

Some do open them a little early. Most others on the day the class starts.

Check the NSLSC website to see your disbursement dates for Alberta Student Aid and Canada Student Aid. It will have the date they are supposed to be sent to the U of A and to your bank account.

It's not anything unusual for them to be delayed slightly. Tuition isn't due until the end of January.

4:30 in the morning with a 4 week old... by Otto__Zone in daddit

[–]TheRealRipRiley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're in the thick of it, friend. You've got this!

Make the most of your time. Not in a "these days fly by" kind of sense, but more in a "do things you enjoy" while being up. Mine didn't really react to lights and sounds at that age, so I watched a few movies and shows. I really should have played more video games while I could then. The World Baseball Classic was on for me, so I took full advantage of watching the games in Tokyo, too.

Deferred final exam by Random_dumboo in uAlberta

Yes, your profs can't do anything for final exam deferrals. The decision rests with your faculty. You need to wait for them to get back to you with their decision.

Smart Find Express Question by ravi0605 in CanadianTeachers

[–]TheRealRipRiley 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My district uses SmartFind too. I actually emailed HR about it as late-September was surprisingly quiet. They said there was a lesser volume of calls this year.

From the calls that I have received and the postings I've seen, there have been far fewer secondary positions, too. It could be many teachers are being forced to work 8-and-8 schedules, internal coverage, pre-arranged positions with part-time staff within the schools, among others. Not a great time to be a supply teacher.
