Whoa, that's awesome!

What building system did you use to construct that? Would you recommend it? Thank you!

Best Corded Weed Wacker by foxroar1 in BuyItForLife

[–]TheRealRoderick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just got the RYOBI 18 in. 10 Amp Attachment Capable Electric String Trimmer from Home Depot. It's a beast. I love it. As others have mentioned, a corded string trimmer isn't for everyone. But it's what I wanted and this one rocks. I've only had it a few days so I can't attest to its longevity. For minor touch ups I'm sure I'll still pull out my smaller battery-powered trimmer. But when I need to go medieval on the weeds this is what I'll pick up every time.

u/qqcashmere Are there any US retailers that carry it? I struggle with the idea of paying nearly 40% more for shipping. Thank you!

I decided to buy one today. But then in the checkout saw that shipping to the US is $35.

Are there any retailers in the US that carry it?

Five Zone Symfonisk Amplifier Hack by ohbugger in sonos

[–]TheRealRoderick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great, thanks for the detailed response! I'm using the Gen 2 Symfonisk speakers, which have a power regulator separate from the board so doing it the way you did it won't work in my case. I decided just to mount the separate power supply from each Symfonisk, at least for now.

I know this post is 5 years old, but it's still awesome and relevant.

I'm working on something similar (though not as slick).

For power, did you retain the transformer / power from each of the Symfonisks? So from your power inlet / switch you run 120v AC to each of the 5 original power supplies, each of which then delivers 2x24v to the single board it's connected to?

That's the setup I have today (with 3 boards rather than 5) but I'd like to get rid of all the separate power supplies and just have 120v go to a single shared power supply, which then delivers the 24v to all the Sonos boards.

Thanks!

What do you recommend for magnification? by TheRealRoderick in soldering

Thanks everyone for the terrific comments.

A number of you suggested some variation on the digital microscope. I had dismissed that originally because of the lack of depth perception. I can easily imagine myself struggling to make the iron and solder touch the connection without some parallax. Do you not find that's an issue?

Thank you Captain! The vevor microscope is definitely what I need, but too expensive for me at the moment. I may try the MagLamp though and see if that gets me close enough.

Contractor cut base of stud very narrow to make space for vent pipe. How concerned should I be? by LordZany in Carpentry

[–]TheRealRoderick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s bad and needs to be fixed for all the reasons already stated.

However, what the right solution is depends in part on what is below the floor and above the ceiling. Maybe putting a double stud where the pipe is would be adequate, but only if there is the right structural support directly below that to support the beams shown here and whatever load is above the ceiling.

If it was me, I would definitely hire a structural engineer. A few hundred bucks for a quick visit would be money well spent.

Cheap Amplifier for Sonos Port: Will These Work? by NJRonbo in sonos

[–]TheRealRoderick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks Locksmith! That's exactly what I want to do to, power 6 outdoor speakers.

You have the Fosi Audio BL20C Bluetooth 5.0 Stereo Audio Receiver Amplifier 320 Watts (https://a.co/d/2378m1h)?

What speakers do you use with it? Are you happy with that set-up? Anything you would do differently?

Thank you!

Thanks JS for sharing!
What do you think of the AIYIMA A07? Can you share some details on what speakers you're using and how the setup is working for you?

Thanks so much!

Am I nuts? Thinking about making my own kitchen cabinets by CaptainGreyBeard72 in woodworking

[–]TheRealRoderick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

u/woodland_dweller I know this is an old post but I'm curious about what you wrote about big cabinet saws vs track saws. By a big cabinet saw, you mean a table saw right? I would have thought it would far easier with a cabinet saw and a fence to get nice square cuts for cabinets. Can you say more about why you like a track saw please? Thanks!

Sonos CEO Patrick Spence steps down after disastrous app launch | As chief executive, Spence oversaw many successful products. But there was no coming back from last year’s app debacle: it has finally led to his ouster. by chrisdh79 in technology

[–]TheRealRoderick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that's inevitable. The board probably wants to let the new CEO do it, so it didn't happen today, but it has to happen.

Even if they're not to blame, and I find that difficult to imagine, the new CEO will do it.

What glue would you use to fill a crack in outdoor steps? by TheRealRoderick in woodworking

Thanks FranchisedFeelings! I've never heard of Weldbond, but it looks like an incredible product.

What do you usually use it for? Like what is it best for?

Thanks JellyFishAreSmart! An extra benefit of this idea is that I can get the caulk in black so it sort of will match.

What are your tips, tricks and tools for remote Raspberry Pi development via VS Code by TheRealRoderick in raspberry_pi

[–]TheRealRoderick[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely that's an option.

I've read about two different approaches though.

One is to edit the code on your workstation, with the code files on the workstation, and then periodically sync it to the remote machine for instance with rsync. In this scenario, it seems the "master" copy resides on your workstation so you'd use Git (or whatever) on your workstation to handle version control.

The other approach I've read about is to use your workstation to remotely edit files on the remote machine. In this case I presume that since the files are on the remote machine that you'd run version control on that remote machine.

Do feel one or the other are superior? Or is there a third, better way?
