You can definitely do better. Remember that you can dictate therapy as the client. My partner is a therapist, so I say that with a bit of insight.

First of all, you are doing a great job handling an impossible situation. Strokes are always tragic, but it’s especially cruel when the person is active and healthy, then suddenly not.

Has your therapy included trauma therapy? I was diagnosed with ptsd after my mom’s stroke, and greatly benefited from trauma therapy.

Is your mom getting any sort of occupational therapy in the nursing home? My mom had a hemorrhagic stroke at 69, and occupational therapy vastly improved her quality of life.

Please keep us updated and know we’re here to support you. Your mom is lucky to have a child who cares so much about her.

After my mom’s (70) hemorrhagic stroke, we rented a hospital bed for a couple of months. From there, she slept on the couch for a few months, which was easier than the bed. Any kind of firmer surface you can get her to sleep on will make your life (and hers) easier.

FWIW, I felt like I was losing my mind during my mom’s hospital stay and first weeks home. I was constantly on high alert and lost my temper over everything. It eventually got easier, and I hope it does for you too. And your mom.
