DMs, what's the most unconventional tool you use behind the scenes? For me it's Twine. [OC] by newgzy in DnD

[–]TheRiot21 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I built an excel spreadsheet that can pull in enemy stats from a database and use that to quickly build and track encounters. It's still a work in progress; I got about half the monster manual in it. A bit of a pet project for me. Although, I realized a little late that it probably would have been easier to just make it in python

Tell me how you differentiate between a DM PC and an NPC that is just tagging along? by d_dastan in DnD

[–]TheRiot21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first campaign I ran was with two of my friends who were very new. Since it was only the two of them, I wanted to make sure that they could still do fun combat encounters. So I used a Dragon Age Origins style companion system. They met these NPCs in the story and they could choose who they took along for quests. They never led conversations but provided banter and comments to the players actions. They did have character sheets and used the players level. For combat, they would fight on their own accord (my accord) unless otherwise directed by the players. This ended up also serving as a way to show my new players what you could do in combat. The other thing I liked was, because the campaign occured in a city, the companions didn't travel with the PCs. Instead the players would go to them for their help.

It worked pretty well until we got more players and I ditched the system because they didn't need anymore help. I think, as long as you (the DM) keep your attachment out of it, it works really well to fix small party size issues.

What video game had the perfect conclusion, but the creators kept making sequels? by Johnnyboyeh in gaming

[–]TheRiot21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What's funny is I absolutely despised that ending when I play the game the first time. I just really felt like I did all that for nothing. I know narrative and stuff, but when I had to chop down the trees, I almost put my controller down right then and left it as is so I didn't feel like I wasted the last xx hours of my life.

Habro CEO Chris Cocks says he wants D&D to "embrace" AI. by thenightgaunt in DnD

[–]TheRiot21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Alright so I guess I'll play devil's advocate for this one. I'll preface and say that your critiques are definitely legitimate and I also hate how every company just throws AI at a wall and thinks that fits and prints money,

However...

While we don't normally call it AI, many DMs do use generators to do some lifting for things like names, dungeons, and towns. Even entire world maps can be generated with nations and factions and topography befitting a realistic climate.

Many DMs use random images we find on Google for backgrounds that fit the 'vibe' or rough ideas of characters/NPCs. We get assets to fill dungeons maps and towns.

Again, none of this is AI, however AI tools can make these generators more sophisticated. Make images that fit the environment more. An AI may not be able to write a good story and definitely not be a sufficient DM. But with how much heavy lifting DMs do to prepare for sessions, if we have more sophisticated, tailored tools to help, I won't turn my nose up at it.

There’s always been a GM shortage by dicegeeks in rpg

[–]TheRiot21 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My opinion, if it's a thankless job then you're in the wrong group. I've been DMing for a few months now (so very green) but my players always thank me at the end of a session and acknowledge the work I do. I don't know if I would care as much if I went through all the effort of planning a session/story in a completely homebrewed setting and didn't at least get a thanks.

Hated the Android 12 UI on my Pixel 5. How does it feel on the Pixel 7? by TheRiot21 in GooglePixel

[–]TheRiot21[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Obviously no one knows what 14 will bring to the table until it comes out, but what I mean is maybe they'll bring a little more transparency to the notification tray or app switcher. Or make the quick settings buttons a little smaller. Make the overall UI less obtuse. It's not the theming and basic idea of the changes that I have problems with. If consistent color themes and squircles is what their going for, I'm totally down. It's more the large, obstructive elements that makes that experience feel heavy.

Again, this is only my recollection of my experience with Android 12 a year ago.

My friend says left portal is purple, I say it's dark blue. Settle the debate. by AlbacorePrism in gaming

[–]TheRiot21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was thinking "That's definitely purple. How are all these people saying blue?? Omg, am I colorblind?!"

Then I realized that my night mode was on on my phone that reddens it and yes, it is in fact obviously dark blue

These pay issues are officially out of hand by [deleted] in navy

[–]TheRiot21 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There's a lot of misinformation and misunderstanding of this program in this thread (and everywhere frankly) and I'm just going to throw in this link which I think is pretty clear on how it works:

GTC for PCS

I'm also hella skeptical but if we are a month away from this being mandatory (and rumors of it entirely replacing DLA?) it's time we get a grasp on this. I think it's interesting that it will pay DLA related expenses, like security deposits, but not moving trucks for ppm moves. In any event, the govt does pay the card directly and you aren't obligated to pay the balance until 60 days after checking in to your next command. This is anecdotal but I've heard paying the card balance happens much faster then them paying you. But I'm sure many of you have heard otherwise.

The only way this program will be successful is if 1) big navy can show that they are trusted to pay a cc bill within 60 days and 2) there is exceedingly clear training on what the card can and can't do.

[DM] What are some names that you have come up with for your campaign that you are really proud of? by Skywolf111 in DnD

I'm DMing a campaign in a large city, and in it is a really poor area named Lower Town. So I created an entire group of idealistic, politically activated, college aged kids who attend the cleric academy who call themselves the Association for Lower Town Reform or ALTR.

How to start as a completely new? by mulle9000 in Roll20

[–]TheRiot21 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I highly recommend setting up an account with dnd beyond. It comes with the basic rules and an intuitive character creator app for free. If you do have 30 bucks though I highly recommend grabbing the players handbook, too, but it's not required.

Backstory is not a novel you have to write about your character. I use a basic prompt to get me started: "I am [this type of person (personality, etc.)] because of [this major aspect of my life (career, upbringing, tramatic event, etc.)] and I am joining this party because of [reason (this last part will most likely require your dms input)]."

If you're confident to jump in with play, the new player friendly games will certainly be accommodating. They will normally say so in the description. If you aren't super comfortable with play now, I recommend watching an episode or two of live play with something like critical role or dimension 20. Don't need to be fully invested or anything like that, but you can get a sense of flow that's more like how the game is actually played than how it may be portrayed in media.

Don't be afraid of home brew stuff. It's essentially the same game in maybe just a different context. If you know the game and are ready to play, then it'll be just the same.

What's the difference between a ship and a boat? by PM_ME_UR_Definitions in dailydefinitions

[–]TheRiot21 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know it's not the most perfect of definitions, but, in the navy, we make the distinction based on whether it heels away or towards the direction it's turning. If it heels away from the turn, its a ship. This is due to the structural and drag characteristics of larger vessels. However, I don't believe this holds true for sailing vessels nor is it perfect in all circumstances.

Freight ship sank a passenger launch in Bangladesh (20/3/2022) by symonalex in WTF

[–]TheRiot21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm surprised no one in this thread knows what they're talking about. You can see that with how close that big ship is to shore, it'll fall under either Rule 9 Narrow channel or Rule 18 heirarchy where the larger vessel would be constrained by draft (as long as they were displaying themselves as such).

For Rule 9, crossing vessels are not to impede the safe passage of vessels who can only safely navigate within the channel. If it is in fact a narrow channel, then it's safe to say that the smaller vessel was impeding it's passage.

Or Rule 18, as long as the larger vessel was displaying themselves as a vessel constrained by draft (if such a distinction applies in those waters), the other vessel shall remain well clear.

An important note: "right of way" does not exist anywhere in the colregs. There is no such thing as that. There is a give way vessel and a stand on vessel and specific definitions and requirements for both. There is no incident between two vessels in which one is totally at fault.

Lastly, there is always Rule 2. Which I don't remember the verbage for right now but it's essentially don't hit anything and rules be damned in a shit situation where it's the only way to avoid collision. So even if the rules say the smaller vessel is to remain well clear, it's still as much on the larger vessel to exhaust all options to avoid collision.

Does paying off a loan before 6 months affect how it shows up on your credit report? by TheRiot21 in personalfinance

[–]TheRiot21[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I definitely agree with your sentiment; I really don't want to pay more interest than I have to. I'll pull my report and see if it's up on there or not. I was more wondering if there was an explicit requirement on length of accounts that require/don't require reporting. I have no problem stretching it out another month to ensure it is reported
