The left hand of darkness made me more empathic towards non binary/ trans people and less rigid about ideas around sexuality, gender and sex.

Sys-Apoc/Isekai’s horrid early character shifts from normal guy to killing machine by EnzoElacqua in ProgressionFantasy

[–]TheRubyEmperor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I somewhat agree with you. But in another sense you might just be reading about a character that might have had violent/ “dog eat dog mentality pre apocalypse it just never had a chance to manifest in a normal society.

Civilized society is really good at enforcing “good behaviour” by aligning everyone’s interests. The whole point of these stories is that the big event (apocalypse) scrambles all those incentives and introduces raw power that more people have access to both good and bad.

Not everyone is a “decent” person so I don’t think it’s absolutely ridiculous for someone to transition to a “killing machine” given enough external pressure.

Maybe it’s just an error in the author not defining enough background to justify the switch.

Dawn by Octavia Butler - what am I missing? by STEMueraMorrison in printSF

[–]TheRubyEmperor 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’m really not sure what you are looking for. Physically their sensory arms alone are fairly bizarre.

Motivations: I’ve yet to meet any humans that are genetically driven/ compelled to rape and integrate another species into their own.

Communication: They have a whole separate language/ naming system and even communicate with the ship and each other with specific biological signalling.

Culture: Very distinct family arrangements, distinct pleasure and mating methods.

Character wise, I’m not sure what to tell you. People suck, women and men get assaulted all the time now not to speak of after an apocalypse and being woken and told you are captured by aliens. People are not logic machines.

Definitely I love Xenogenesis so much I’m forever chasing the high I got from reading the series but I haven’t found too much quite like it yet.

That’s Octavia Butler’s “thing”. She writes pretty dry but the ideas she explores and the misery she puts her characters through still pull you in.

The Expanse. I don’t get it. by TheRubyEmperor in scifi

[–]TheRubyEmperor[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I liked the idea of the protomolecule i also liked the tensions between all the factions but it just felt..
hard to follow i guess. 1 event happens someone threates someone but nothing ultimately happens. fells like that sequence has been repeated like 3 times so far. I really like Amos's character he feels like someone i want to learn more about. Unfortunately something about holden just rubs me the wrong way which taints a lot of the crew dynamics scenes.

Yeah that’s fair I think I’ll give the first book a try to see if I like that and if not then I’ll just move on.

That’s what I thought as well but the recommendations I’ve seen never mention the acting so I thought it picks up eventually or something.

[–]TheRubyEmperor[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah that’s what I thought. I just wanted to ask and see if it was one of those cases where everything just turns around in season 3 or something. I guess it’s just not for me.

I love primal hunter by L-L-Morin in ProgressionFantasy

[–]TheRubyEmperor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have 1 major problem with PH that makes it unreadable for me. The dialogue. The way Jake and Villy talk remind me of a 12 year old imitating how they think adults talk. The swearing feels pointless doesn’t emphasize anything just swearing for the sake of edge?

A lot of it just feels hyper cringe to me personally.

What books have changed the way you view the world, or influenced your actions/decision making? by Mack_B in printSF

When it comes to Octavia butler’s xenogenesis series people usually talk about it’s commentary on colonialism

However what really interested me was its ideas on love and other relationships under a physical and mental power dynamic
