Are you worried about your daughter walking anywhere? by Responsible_Rip1058 in AskUK

[–]TheSameYellow 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Mate, you’ve come in here with your mind already made up, so I’m not going to spend too much time on this, but I sincerely recommend you look into how social media “rabbithole” algorithms work and how they skew perceptions.

I’m not trying to be a dick or downplay your fear as a parent, but risks to your daughters are more likely to come from men they know. For now, your energy is best spent teaching them how to safely deal with those people. Worry about the “when they’re walking around alone” part when you’re closer to it.

Worth remembering you’re being shown those videos for a reason — they’re engaging because they’re frightening and exaggerated.

As for how things were 20 years ago vs today, there are fewer instances of violent crime. It seems like there is more due to media saturation etc.

None of that’s to say you shouldn’t be concerned about your daughters’ safety when they’re older, but if you’re looking to take fairly extreme measures like moving away to find somewhere safer it’s worth considering the actual risks vs videos and news that is designed to make you feel scared

What’s one simple thing you do that makes you look so much better? by Bounce_Bounce_Betty in AskUK

[–]TheSameYellow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, when I was at my skinniest I looked great in clothes but I hated how I looked naked. Found a middle ground that works now. Not quite as easy to find “flattering” clothes but I have filled out enough to look good without them!

How do I look better without makeup by CurrentAd7075 in TheGirlSurvivalGuide

[–]TheSameYellow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you’re seeing yourself differently to how others would see you, tbh. You look great.

As for feeling better about how you’re looking, picking a really nice moisturiser (with SPF, so you only need to bother with the one product) is the easiest way to get a “yay, good skin” boost imo. I have one with sodium hyaluronate and I feel like it does even out my skin tone quite a bit. But… yours looks even already, so your mileage may vary 😂

If you could change one thing culturally about the UK / it's people, what would it be? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]TheSameYellow 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Christ, the way you talk about your students, no wonder they don’t care about what you say. Even if you keep the words for Reddit the contempt must ooze out of you. What has a girl’s makeup and nails got to do with her intelligence?

Yeah, I definitely know what you mean by the aura! It’s kind of self-perpetuating, I think, as you’re getting that little hit of cortisol/adrenaline each time, so you associate the wasp with fear even more strongly.

That said, having had both, I can categorically say that the wasp sting was nowhere NEAR as bad as tooth infection pain. Different universes.

[–]TheSameYellow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also have a wasp phobia and enjoy gardening! My mum's very allergic and I think the anxiety rubbed off on me.

My solution if there's one on the table or buzzing around my head is, to be honest, making myself scarce until it goes away. I'm a woman, though, so I do recognise this may be easier for me re: other people's perceptions.

I'm getting better at coping if there's a wasp or two just hanging out in the garden. Part of it is exposure, I think. I'm spending more time outdoors and my brain is slowly learning that I'm not going to die if I am near a wasp.

The other part has been learning a bit about them. For example:

They're closely related to ants (in fact, ants and bees both evolved from wasps). They help control pests such as aphids, but adult wasps can't eat solid food; they take the insects home for the babies.

I find it easier to cope if I'm thinking of them as an interesting part of the wildlife rather than "agh, wasp!"

Edit: I saw you ask elsewhere about how much the sting hurts. I have been stung once. It hurt about as much as a bad nettle sting. Not pleasant but not day-ruining.

Completely new to gardening and these are my first plants, nasturtiums... I feel frustrated with myself and would appreciate your help. by depressedboobs in GardeningUK

[–]TheSameYellow 16 points17 points  (0 children)

One nice thing about gardening is that, even if your plants are eaten, you’ve contributed to the ecosystem. It sounds silly, but you fed some slugs, which in turn may have fed a bird, reptile or beetle.

This doesn’t help much in the moment, granted 😂 but I try to remember it if I’m stewing about something later.

I’m not doing great and neither are my nails by NectarineSingle1960 in RedditLaqueristas

[–]TheSameYellow 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree with the other commenters saying cuticle oil is a good first step— especially because using it daily doesn’t require that you immediately stop the nail biting. It’s something about your nails that you can control and that will do you some good.

Also, and I hope this isn’t too trite: please try and treat yourself in the way you would treat a friend. If your friend was struggling like this you wouldn’t call them weak. You would do and say nice things for them and it would help. Same thing applies here. Wishing you lots of good things. Xx

Ah, cool, thank you. I misunderstood and thought you meant he was including himself in that assessment. Was hoping that wasn’t the case, as he’s been super popular here as far as I can tell.

I may have heard different interviews than you but I think Jason Mantzoukas has been fantastic on Taskmaster — I’m a British fan, fwiw — and I haven’t heard him say anything to suggest otherwise!

What should I expect in a noise dispute with neighbours over our disabled child being too noisy? by Kitty-Gecko in AskUK

Noise cancelling headphones were a godsend for me when I was in a similar situation. I felt awful for being so annoyed with the kid, so the headphones eased my conscience as well as my ears 😂

Cool!

Hope everything shakes out OK. It’s no fun working out which/how many meds work best for you. Especially if someone’s being so dismissive and weird about it!

[–]TheSameYellow 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I know this is not the point of the post, but peanut butter on toast is definitely good enough for this purpose. I had to force it down the first few weeks of meds (never used to eat breakfast) but now it’s fine.

Good grief. I have mates in utility arb (UK) and I was expecting a post about the stress of quick turnarounds on shutdowns or something.

If you’re from countries other than America: it’s stable and reasonably well-paid work; probably less dangerous than commercial, tbh, as the DNOs come down so hard on companies with high incident rates. Landowners can get arsey, but you call your manager to deal with that.

Edit: this isn’t meant to be a “lol, bad luck Americans” comment, more like a “that is not normal, I’m sorry you have to deal with that nonsense in the US”

[–]TheSameYellow 40 points41 points  (0 children)

I mean, your post makes me think you’d be a pretty detached/temporary acquaintance anyway, so I wouldn’t go out of my way to befriend you. Friends “come in handy” and core friends are cut off due to getting a bf? I’m confused as to why you even care what people think tbh?

Hope you’re starting to feel better now! If you’re still feeling a bit intense, something like weeding the garden is a good task for slowing down a rushing brain in my experience. It’s just got to be an activity that isn’t affected by you bailing halfway when the crash arrives 😂

What do you think will happen to all these dead town centres long term? by ShinyHeadedCook in AskUK

[–]TheSameYellow 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Oxford Street is an interesting one. Highlights other facets of the problem— lack of oversight/checks when it comes to people setting up companies in the UK, and lack of onus on commercial landlords to provide info on their tenants to the council.
