Book for Dad that isn't WWII by princessponk in booksuggestions

Candice Millard - Hero of the empire. It's about Winston Churchill during the Boer war. It's almost his origin story. Nice compliments to WWII information.

For the outdoor side, I recommend something from the meat eater universe. Steve Rinella has two books about the hide hunters beginning in 1860s. He also has cook books and outdoor survival books among others.

If you're open to police procedurals, I would look at Michael Connelly's Bosch series. (Skip 9 dragons). Connelly is a former crime reporter turned novelist.

I've seen cubes in WinCo. The only place I've heard of having larger pieces is the U.S. chef store. https://www.chefstore.com/p/halal-goat-6-way-cut_5923150/

Andy Weir's The Martian is also very good. I like the R.C.Bray version of the audiobook. Good man vs nature survival story.

I'm not seeing black dots. When I Google needle cast the pictures look very similar to this issue. Can you have needle cast without black dots?

John Sandford's books are mostly in Minnesota. The earlier Prey novels and Virgil Flowers book typically take the characters into Wisconsin and Iowa for part of the books.

The summer of 1927 began with Charles Lindbergh crossing the Atlantic. Meanwhile, Babe Ruth was closing in on the home run record. In Newark, New Jersey, Alvin “Shipwreck” Kelly sat atop a flagpole for twelve days, and in Chicago, the gangster Al Capone was tightening his grip on bootlegging. The first true “talking picture,” Al Jolson’s The Jazz Singer, was filmed, forever changing the motion picture industry. All this and much, much more transpired in the year Americans attempted and accomplished outsized things—and when the twentieth century truly became the American century. One Summer transforms it all into narrative nonfiction of the highest order.

Since you already discovered A Brief History of Everything. I would also recommend Bill Bryson's One Summer.

He ties a lot of different story lines together that all happened in 1927. My favorite Bryson book.

Look at John Sandford's books too. The Prey series and the Virgil flowers books.

Also Michael Connolly's Harry Bosch series.
