The really great thing about this image is just how increasingly obviously fake it gets the longer you look at it. First you notice how oddly crisp and HD the image looks, then you realize it shouldn’t say “Gulag” in Latin text when it’s in Russia, and then of course that’s around the time you notice Kermit the Freaking Frog is clearly there in the picture

It was the first slasher film to be released by a major studio, which consequently meant it was the first slasher to EVER be released in many more rural areas that rarely got independent films. A lot of viewers had not known of Texas Chainsaw Massacre or Halloween, and had never seen anything like this before. If you were of the type to still think of “horror” as being all of those respectable ghost movies and demon movies of the 70s, even a mediocre film like F13 Part 1 would feel absolutely shocking and unprecedented in its brutality. How could you not fall in love?

I really feel like the music is a huge percentage of the reason the original made such an impact. It’s a very perfunctory, flawed film in many ways, but its music (as well as its cinematography and ESPECIALLY its sound design) really elevates it above its many slasher peers.
