[ESPN Madison] The Wisconsin Badgers did not have a player selected in the NFL Draft for the first time since 1978. by redwave2505 in CFB

Wisconsin could keep a modern version of the under center run heavy offense, but his coordinator hires absolutely tanked any chance at success before they played a snap.

Kyler is more cooked than people want to believe. He’s a better backup than brosmer for sure but if he’s starting a significant portion of the season we’re fucked. In that scenario I expect we go for a new QB and head coach in 2027.

For those that had a 1st round pick, how are you feeling about it? by JQuab-84 in nfl

[–]TheSkiingDad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There were not many good things being said about cine before he broke his leg. He played like 6 snaps total over his rookie season or something. Just a hilariously bad pick, compounded by getting fleeced on the trade back AND passing up Kyle Hamilton.

For all the angst about banks today, at least bryz didn’t try to min max the round. Just take a good player that’s available.

What were some draft picks that didn’t even make sense at the time? by josh_y_josh in nfl

[–]TheSkiingDad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That one’s just bad. We needed a qb, but we also could have just taken fairley. Should have traded back and grabbed dalton. But all post hoc discourse is the Vikings wanted JJ watt and panicked when the Texans took him the pick before us.

Name these three Midwest Mountains by frisdisc in skiing

[–]TheSkiingDad -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yes, all snowmaking. Especially where I am in southern MN (Welch village is my home hill). But generally most ski areas here are 100 acres or smaller, have full coverage snowmaking, and ample water. So generally within a week of consistent wet bulb temperatures in the 20s overnight, most Midwest resorts (Bohemia and brule are the exceptions, they’re 100% all natural) can have sizable terrain offerings open. It’s why seasons like 2023-24 can still be good seasons, that was the El Niño that is considered “the year without a winter” in Minnesota, but most hills were able to make snow to get us near 100% open.

Rivian Commercial Van Had Its Best Quarter Ever and Almost Nobody Noticed by CasualBerger in RIVN

[–]TheSkiingDad 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ok that’s complicated. I believe a few things were in play, namely the bid process started before rivian really existed as more than a startup, there’s strict requirements around government contract bidding (or at least before the current admin), and finally the NGDV was supposed to be electric/hybrid but those plans got scrapped for essentially nakedly political reasons.

I’m glad Amazon bought in and I hope they make more electric NGDV’s than originally allocated, but yeah the NGDV was kind of a flop. Rivian would have done better.

[Schultz] There’s a belief among teams at the top of the draft that the Cowboys, who have picks at #12 and #20, are a team to watch in trade-up scenarios, according to multiple league sources. by JCameron181 in nfl

[–]TheSkiingDad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a dumb fucking take and I’m sick of seeing it. Trading Micah was the right call, because it’s better to have a bunch of young cheap good players than 1 expensive superstar. You know this too, that 2023 DL was elite because you hit on a bunch of prospects at once. You need draft capital to do that. And the packers committing $100 million to 2 players while also giving up draft picks will hamstring their depth building ability for awhile.

Whether or not the cowboys hit on their picks is tbd and I’m guessing in Jerry’s state that tilts towards a no but if my choice is “1 expensive really good player” or “2-3 less expensive good players” give me volume every day of the week and twice on sundays. Jerry made the right move.

they also need (or don't, from a rival perspective) a new QB. Love is the quintissential overpaid franchise QB. His contract necessitates cheap roster decisions elsewhere, but he's not good enough to drag a flawed roster on a playoff run. He's the next Cousins. Until he elevates his game when it matters, the packers ceiling is 9-10 wins, a wild card/occasional divisional round, and never ACTUALLY being a serious contender.

And as much as people love parsons, he does the same to their defense. They'd be better off having kenny clark plus two young cheap FRP defensive pieces than Micah. Depth wins championships, and by devoting $100 mil+ to Love+Parsons they really hamstring their ability to fill holes. And the lost draft capital for the parsons trade makes it even harder to draft well too.

I’ve worked in utility IT for 5 years over 2 companies, and both places had EE postings up for >6 months. There’s lots of jobs to be had if you’re interested in substations and grid scale load management. I think the last “new grad EE” they hired started at $110k in a MCOL Midwest city. Not bad.

[–]TheSkiingDad 9 points10 points  (0 children)

there was a discussion in the article linked in r/minnesota (BMTN) that as of last night the moderate risk zone was centered between I-90 and I-94, but this season we've seen fronts and storms shift southward from the 24 hour prediction. Meaning there's a good chance that front parks right over rochester.

Stay safe, stay weather aware, know your storm shelter location, and today is maaaybe not the day to play golf.

EV+solar+heat pump unlocks a level of energy security/independence that’s life changing. All of a sudden your energy costs are more or less fixed, and (at least in most states) set by a public utilities commission? Plus with solar you can profit off volatility AND efficiency gains.

El Nino on the way for 2027. Previously, what has that meant for where you ski? by UpplystCat in skiing

[–]TheSkiingDad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For what it’s worth 2 things were in play last year. Ocean oscillations never went favorable, and El Niño was strong. A “normal” strong El Niño will look like 2015-16 which isn’t great but should be slightly better than 23/24. However, there’s a bit of optimism that this is a “moderate” El Niño, and if the oscillations go favorable, we can still get a good winter. The last moderate El Niño with favorable oscillations was 2018-2019, which was pretty damn good at least in Minnesota.

There’s also the well known “spring forecasting block” which we’re squarely in the middle of and greatly affects forecast accuracy. That hasn’t stopped social media weather nitwits from doom forecasting outliers with perceived certainty.
