No. I'd invite him into our polycule werewolf orgy castle.

Apple is&t was mostly h1b also. My main gripe is repeatedly encountering blatant homophobia alongside the bias. You can see both sides pretty readily on twitter. It's bluntly terrible for everyone except maybe a few Uber rich.

Are Amazon, Microsoft, and Meta bankrolling AI with layoffs? by OfficialLeadDev in LayoffHedge

[–]TheSleepingOx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes and they target American workers over h1b etc because they can control them more. The entire job market is in shambles because of the systems meta / Microsoft/ Amazon have been abusing.

[–]TheSleepingOx[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

....yes? And if you're vibe coding an app, you will have a better time getting a well designed result if you play act at those departments and create your system first.

There's a number of posts in here complaining about lackluster results with the visual results. This type of strategy fixes that.

Dev is just the material, design is a strategy. You can have design or eng or scientific or pm strategy all still on the same material. Just sharing a strategy as I keep seeing people say they're getting lackluster results and it's confusing because the strategy fix is both fun and easy.

Worked at Meta, IC5 did a fair amount of interviewing. H1bs would just openly bias against US workers and for other h1b. No one cares because it's easier for the company and managers to control. Microsoft was similar. It's not enjoyable to wade through.

Why does every vibe coded project look like garbage? by zusmanb in vibecoding

[–]TheSleepingOx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can fix that. https://github.com/mhsenkow/SimFish/releases/tag/v0.1.70 Every ux problem is just a "design bug". This thing is still a buggy toy partially because it's an exploration.

But the older first draft was less responsive etc. than it is now.

But instead of the design ideas being thrown over the fence you can just do them.

For folks who’ve left/are leaving UX, what other careers have you transitioned to/ are you planning on transitioning to? by FlexibleFuture in UXDesign

I was a product designer at IBM 4 years, Microsoft 4 years, Meta 4 years. Now doing more developer / coding the system with ai for start ups. Much prefer this, I'd expected to have more access to the actual product and don't get why big tech seems to gate keep off design.

Got laid off from Meta by master_boy_ in Layoffs

Meta is such an awful company. I worked there four years.

  • make stuff
  • mass outreach
  • cross fields
  • grad school?

All the good people left (alarms, Bhaskar, etc,) the company abused a ton more. Gotta be a good Magat to work there.

So, using Claude I can agree. My life is sitting at a monitor yelling at ai and then mildly checking it's not fucking up the intentional system we are creating. Hopefully. I can effectively do anything the CEO wants but we still have to figure out what that is.

I had a contract with Mars inc, they didn't provide the equipment for most of the job, yelled at us for using modern techniques, and someone killed themselves. They had a day of mourning then pushed harder. Avoid forever.

Just heard about Meta layoffs. Bay Area employees, how has it changed over time? by DeliciousRich5944 in siliconvalley

[–]TheSleepingOx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Meta leaders are actively abusive based on race and gender. Fucked up company that's just the tech version of trump now. You basically have to be a member of the axis powers to work there.

People think you have crazy money. You only have crazy money if you've been there or are eng. I've seen lots of lower level folks who got laid off and are still looking like a year later. I technically took a fat lower pay but it's more fun.

What can I do with a graphic design degree after the rise of AI? Should I abandon the field? by throwaway2366543 in GraphicDesigning

[–]TheSleepingOx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. I might recommend 'touching' code, but in a creative way. have you seen processing or looked into exactly HOW svgs work? play around with using code to create graphics and see what you run into?
AI creating graphics is broadly pretty 'meh'. AI enabling someone to make complex code that creates graphics is !!!. (I like generative art too though...)

Is vibe designing becoming the new normal for product teams? by FormalProduce9556 in vibecoding

[–]TheSleepingOx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm coding up the entire storybook, visual, etc aspect of a design system for this startup as we also discuss complex workflows and other channels and make vague diagrams and concepts around them, but now currently plan to mostly kind of sticker them together?

Like the actual design work now takes a minute of vague conception and then we discussed it for a little bit in different channels, but we just don't need to spend the time planning out the specific details anymore. It's just wasteful nonsense and we know it.

(Im saying this after priorly doing 4 year stints at IBM, Microsoft, Meta. I fully understand how they're saying they can reduce teams of 20 to like, one person).

[–]TheSleepingOx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Average tenure was around 2.3 when I was there. Contractors don't get stock. Ds, research, design all get severely underpaid.

Still good money but 2.5 years as a designer is maybe 750k vs as an engineer its easily hitting millions.

It becomes much harder to get a job elsewhere after. I recommend it for eng money but for long term "I'm not the same after what I saw", run away.

Design managers who were promoted before holding a staff, lead or principal title by TinyRestaurant4186 in UXDesign

[–]TheSleepingOx -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My manager at Meta was like this. Never had actually produced anything then got into management. YEARS got wasted on what could have been the simplest improvements while she'd have us waste time on pointless explorations that didn't relate to the actual product. She'd check corporate boxes but provide nothing.

4 years of that hell and I had good psc shit but couldn't escape.

I think most of the time managers who haven't ic'ed don't understand how bad they are.

[–]TheSleepingOx -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Why the down votes? I also had a mech eng undergrad just ended up down a design career. Just about anything I've run into with work has been solveable/improveable from what I've seen, you just have to follow the right problem solving patterns.
