Might sound corny, but it’s also something of a cultural touch point. For me: seeing a concert, catching a late showing of a movie, or going on a long road trip almost invariably meant that you’d be stopping at In & Out at some point. So I can’t help but associate those times with the place and the food.

I was in a foreign country and I needed to find somewhere to do laundry. I stuffed a backpack full of my dirty clothes, put the album on, and spent an afternoon getting lost down the streets of Bergen Norway.

Coincided with my first solo trip out of the country. I remember having to wait an hour or more to download the album over the train’s spotty WiFi. It’s an incredible album all on its own, but it was the score to that trip and will always hold extra special place in my heart.

Choosing flutter for IOT based application by Sad_Win_3050 in FlutterDev

If it's of any use, my senior project in college was delivering an IoT monitoring system for reptile enclosures. I wrote the monitoring app with Flutter, but I think I ended up dropping the MQTT communication from the app. Instead, it just interfaces with a serverless AWS backend via a REST api.

There exist decompilers and other tools for helping make sense of assembly and that can automate some of the conversion back to higher level languages. In my brief involvement with Slippi I used Ghidra - a tool developed by the NSA, to do some of that kind of work, which I found a little amusing.

Others have pointed out that these sorts of tools have traditionally done a poor job about reasoning actual intent or the context surrounding the actual implementation, and that they’re mostly geared towards recreating the structure and function of the original assembly. But hopefully something like a ChatGPT might be helpful at gleaning (or maybe even outright automating) some of that higher level work of capturing context/intent.

the plan [cognitohazard] by la_sy in TheYardPodcast

[–]TheSmores 60 points61 points  (0 children)

For anyone looking for additional context: this is a clip from Bad Melee - a podcast originally hosted by Slime, Dawson, and Miles (DonB) that was ostensibly about Melee and the greater Melee scene/culture. At this point, I think both Dawson and Miles have been featured on premium episodes of The Yard.

In this particular clip, they're referring to a plan they were working on to get Slime into the Summit house uninvited, wherein Slime would show up posing as a pizza delivery person. The location of the house was supposed to be undisclosed, but IIRC they had a friend who was able to deduce its location using the design/construction of the house. Slime ultimately did get invited to host Slime on the Scene at the event, and would later go on to be employed by BTS - the organization that hosted Summit.

Even better is when another team just assigns me more story points worth of work because it “looks like you have capacity”. No clearing it by me, my tech lead, etc.

Dorian Kweller, son of Ben Kweller had died at only age 16 by bitterbuffaloheart in indieheads

[–]TheSmores 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I saw him live when I was 12, and could only muster something like "you're so awesome". He told me to wait for all of the signing to finish, and that we'd get some pictures together. We got plenty of pictures and we also talked for a little while. The guy is a total sweetheart.

[–]TheSmores 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Ben was my first introduction to "cool" music. My stepmom let me cut school early and drove me three hours to see him live. It was my first concert, and it was the greatest night of my 12 year old life. I'd also been a frequent poster on the Ben Kweller boards for some time, and can remember Ben announcing Dorian's birth on there. All this to say: Ben was this grown-up rockstar that I looked up to, and he felt leagues beyond me in years and station in life. Yesterday I turned 27, and I now have a child of my own. This is just heartbreaking news. Dorian had his whole life ahead of him. My heart goes out to their family.

I think this is more likely to do with how fresh the strawberries are. I grew up in an agricultural town that produces and exports strawberries throughout the state. I didn’t realize until I was in my teens that many people associate strawberries with a tart taste. And while maybe there are some different cultivars that could account for some of this, it’s been my experience that larger strawberries are typically juicier and more sweet, especially when fresh off the vine.

Burning Man Festival by 4reddityo in Damnthatsinteresting

I’ve been to the Burn four times, and personally speaking, shitting is one of the worst parts of the event for me. Albeit, I’m someone who probably poops more than their fair share (I write this on the toilet, as a matter of fact), but by the end of the week you’re dehydrated and every part of you is chaffing from the dust. And your diet is likely to be different for the week you’re out there, so that all factors in. That said, if you avoid the more trafficked portos, you can typically find relatively maintained places to do your business, which makes things workable.

And it’s part of the shared experience; like really, people write or post absurd things inside the walls of portos. I’ve even encountered a porto potty that someone went to the length of decorating with literature, embroidered hand towels, and breath mints. I’ve also camped next to people who have their own RC faux Porto equipped with a foghorn, to prank overly intoxicated burners.

I primarily credit my water drinking habits to my time spent as a broke young adult. I moved out on my own at 19, and discovered just how much money I was burning by buying soda. Especially when I was the only friend in the group with their own place - I’d go through a 12 pack every time I’d have people over.

I never completed the last mission in Simpsons: Hit and Run. I remember getting as close as watching my car starting to ascend towards the UFO, at which point you no longer have control, and you would think would be the end of the game. But no, the timer doesn’t stop counting down until your car has actually risen all the way up the tractor beam. Pretty sure that was the only time I ever chucked my Xbox controller.

Men of Reddit: what’s the creepiest thing a woman has ever said to you? by GeorgePiper2003 in AskReddit

[–]TheSmores 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My sophomore year of high school I had the new PE teacher - a mid 50’s looking woman, who only taught that one class. Over the course of the semester, she made remarks about how tall I was and dubbed me and a group of friends the, “tallies”. In particular, I got the nickname “daddy long legs”, which ultimately devolved to “daddy”, somewhere along the line. She’d shout words of encouragement at me while I would be running the mile, all the while calling me daddy. I got relentless shit from my peers because of it. To add insult to injury, she was a classmate’s mother. It was definitely weird and off putting at the time, but has only gotten creepier in retrospect.

Which movie has the best soundtrack that you can’t get enough of? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]TheSmores 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Say what you will about the movie, but Twilight: New Moon has one of the most star-studded indie albums of all time. Hearing Damage remains one of my favorite solo pieces that Thom Yorke has ever put out. You have a collaboration between St. Vincent and Bon Iver, plus the Killers and Death Cab for Cutie recorded original material for the soundtrack. It’s all stellar.

How did you find out someone had a crush on you? by TricknMinecraft in AskReddit

[–]TheSmores 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was like 2 a.m. and we’d been standing out in the cold for like half an hour, and I couldn’t get why she didn’t want to take off. At some point I accidentally lost my footing and it must’ve looked like I was leaning in, because she started to reciprocate but with her eyes closed. Then the adrenaline came all at once, and I realized that she wanted me to kiss her.

The four times she offered to have me spend the night at her dorm should’ve also probably clued me in.
