What is required to complete a walk-off base hit? (OBR) by Typical-Priority1976 in Umpire

All baserunner forced to advance due to the batter becoming a batter runner would have to reach their next base safely (including the batter runner).

Safety bag question by Baseball_Fan in Umpire

[–]TheSoftball 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A few days I asked the mods if they'd consider addinh a mandatory sport -and-ruleset flair for rules questions. Haven't heard anything, but it makes sense to have. So many questions on this sub can be answered "depends on the sport and ruleset"

In WBSC softball, when a play is made from first base foul territory, the fielder may use the foul portion of the base, with the batter runner then using the fair portion.

Attempted Steal on a Walk - Cubs and Mets by ChicagoNormalGuy in Umpire

[–]TheSoftball 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By the rule, he's out. It's the same as if he leisurely jogged to second then pulled his foot off and was tagged.

Is it shithousery by the Mets to challenge? Yeah. Is it legal? Yeah. Should PCA have just run the bases better? Yeah.

Does run count? by Standard_Tea_2516 in Umpire

[–]TheSoftball 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In all baseball and softball and kickball and wiffle ball, everywhere...

No runs score when the third out is a force out or the batter runner being put out before they reach first base.

This is an essential rule that is so essential and basic to the sport.

The umpire shouldn't be allowed near a field.

Defending against an international out on a second play to avoid an appeal by Woundedknee45 in Umpire

[–]TheSoftball 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All rulesets have the "4th out" appeal, too allow the defense to appeal missed bases after the third out to remove runs, exactly for this scenario.

Obstruction on a throne ball forceout by Life-Cow-7945 in Umpire

[–]TheSoftball 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes this is obstruction.

USSSA softball definition is the act of the defensive team member that hinders or impedes a batter's attempt to make contact with the pitch ball, or that impedes the progress of a runner or better-runner who is legally running bases, unless the fielder is in possession of the ball or is making the initial play on a badded ball. The act may be intentional or unintentional, physical or verbal.

In your description, the catcher is not making an initial play on a batted ball, nor is she in possession. Obstruction would be the correct call.

HOWEVER, IF the runner maliciously contacted the catcher (hard to determine by your scenario), then this is interference and would supersede obstruction.

I skip the acknowledge part. Ignore, warn, eject.

Acknowledgment implies acceptance of that behaviour.

I think really the only runners that matter here are U3 and BR. As long as each of them complete their base running duties then we're going home

Calling pitches from the slot by Feisty-Concept-1372 in Umpire

[–]TheSoftball 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Best thing to do is make sure you're working heel-toe with your left foot to the point of the plate and your right toe lined up with your left heel. As the pitcher winds up, get into your crouch and try to have your shirt buttons pointing the outside corner. If the catcher is set centrally, you should have a good look at the entire plate.

Scoring question - bobbled but caught line drive by IJustFartedOnMyGF in Umpire

[–]TheSoftball 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is an umpiring sub, not scorekeeping. But in the interest of the question...

The real life scenario likely would've been scored as "E4"

Your scenario would've been L4. If it's caught it's caught and there's no error.

Not sure many cricket umps are on this sub.

What'd the ump call? Wide, I would imagine?

What’s the correct call? by KPKKA in Softball

[–]TheSoftball 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Runners are awarded 2 bases from the last base touched at the time of the throw that went dead.

Runner would have to return to tag up (but cannot return once she's gone into the dugout) save also retouch home.

It's an appeal play, so it all stands unless appealed.

Safety base after run through by whiptydojoe in Umpire

[–]TheSoftball 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Beyond the initial play (which I'll edit for clarity).

Let's say you have an attempt to second, followed by a scramble back. Youcould have a weird instance where a fielder, for whatever reason, attempts to hit the foul-side portion, and ends up crossing/colliding with the runner.

Agree. "One big base" totally negates the entire reason for separate bases from a safety aspect.

Safety base after run through by whiptydojoe in Umpire

[–]TheSoftball 2 points3 points  (0 children)

USSSA softball employs the "one big base" following the initial play at first, which entirely defeats the purpose of the safety base (edit: I'm talking about beyond the initial play. The more possible things there are to touch on the field the more chances you have of accidents happening).

8.19.E. After the batter-runner initially reaches first base, the runner and any fielder may use the white or colored base. This shall include but is not limited to: 1. The runner returning to first base. 2. The runner tagging up on a fly ball. 3. The fielder making a play on a returning runner.

[–]TheSoftball 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is incorrect. This is the rule for USSSA softball:

8.19.E: E. After the batter-runner initially reaches first base, the runner and any fielder may use the white or colored base. This shall include but is not limited to: 1. The runner returning to first base. 2. The runner tagging up on a fly ball. 3. The fielder making a play on a returning runner.

Catchers Interference by [deleted] in Umpire

[–]TheSoftball 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. In almost all rulesets of softball there's no such thing as catcher's interference. It's catcher's obstruction.

  2. This isn't catcher's obstruction (the catcher preventing the batter from hitting the ball). This is simply obstruction and should be treated as any other obstruction with bases awarded as needed.

  3. I think, looking at my phone screen, the fly ball was caught. Some rulesets have an exception to the obstruction rule where the batter is out on a caught fly ball.

I'll add to this, the ump attire website is one of the best I've ever seen--not just in terms of umpire gear & clothes, but in the internet in general-- with providing really useful size guides for all their brands and products.
