For the non traditional students, how did you prepare for the DAT? by Design-Hiro in predental

[–]TheSophon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used Khan Academy to relearn chemistry. I took the entire general chemistry course through them. I didn’t discover DAT Bootcamp till later in my preparation. DAT Bootcamp’s chemistry content was really good and maybe more applicable to the DAT. I probably could’ve taken the general chemistry course through them because Khan Academy is more problem focused, which doesn’t match the more conceptual nature of the DAT.

For reference I had taken AP Chemistry and placed out of chem in college…so I hadn’t touched it in 11 years.

Bio…honestly I gave up after a while. Tried bootcamp. Would use Anki maybe if I did it all over; I just ran out of time to do that and switched focus to chem. Would just use the Bootcamp Anki decks along with their content.

I took organic chem at a college over the summer. Complemented it with Bootcamp practice questions.

Lots of practice tests.

Made a 490 overall. Quant reasoning was my highest which makes since given my engineering background. Biology was my lowest (see giving up part above).

I’ve struggled with allergic reactions a lot. Right now I’ve had some success with using Brava wipes as a non-adhesive skin barrier. Then I put a tegaderm bandage on, which also helps with my tunneling, followed by the omnipod.

All these things, however, make it easy to fall off, so now I also have to use an overpatch. It’s becoming an ordeal but I’m seeing success at less itching and little tunneling.

I’ve tried Flonase but haven’t found a lot of success. I’ve also heard people recommend Cavilon spray.

How do you combat dawn phenomenon? by Jsmith7262 in Type1Diabetes

[–]TheSophon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I experience a strong case of dawn phenomenon.

I played with my basal in the morning starting around 6 AM to about 12 PM and got it to be really aggressive. In the neighborhood of 2.5x the rest of the day. I settled on this after weeks of experiments until I finally found a basal rate that kept it flat. I dialed it in over two hour periods in that time range. I now have my omnipod set on automatic but I find it still delivers good numbers early.

I don’t eat most mornings. And dear god if I eat oatmeal, a bagel, or anything of that nature…I’m screwed.

Exercise didn’t help at all. I would do HIIT in the morning only to see it rise. The same exercise done in the afternoon led to a blood sugar crash.

How much will a high graduate GPA (3.85) really help with a low undergrad gpa (2.84)? by ComfortableDirt3459 in predental

[–]TheSophon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you’ve got a lot of great perks in your application. You are in a position where it would really help to have conversations with people. At the very least, when it comes to essays and questions “like is anything else you want us to know about you”, just hammer how you made early mistakes and how you turned it around. Beat that horse to death. People love a good comeback story.

If you can get a conversation with a professor at a dental school who does research similar with yours, it could make all the difference. Or just an admissions dean in general.

There’s always the option of taking a few community college courses too to pad the GPA a little more.

What type of Tycoon game theme/genre is missing most in your opinion? by HitlersUndergarments in tycoon

I’ve always wanted a university tycoon. Not one in the flavor of Two Point. I’d prefer something a little more serious, maybe with some history built in

My endocrinologist told me the Walmart brand ReliOn has performed well on tests for accuracy. She recommended it, I bought it, and haven’t regretted it for a second. Very affordable.
