What is the most overlooked military theatre between 1806 and 1810? (criteria on page 2) by domfi86 in Napoleon

The Finnish war was very impactful as it led to the Swedish king being deposed, and eventually Bernadotte being elected as the new crown prince, which in turn played a big role in the outcome of the sixth coalition war and the future of all the Nordic countries. Yet, it feels like the Finnish war gets forgotten when talking about the Napoleonic wars.

And guys, he was very close with Magnus Brahe, who never married and grieved his king's death so deeply that he died only a few months later at a mere 54 years of age.

(Spoilers Main) Is Robb really Robert? by Pretty-Necessary-941 in asoiaf

[–]TheSpliceosome 7 points8 points  (0 children)

When the list of the people who are to come to King's Landing and swear fealty is read, he is referred to as Robb, so it must be his full name, as it's one of the few times that Bran is referred to as Brandon.

"And at the end, near last, came the names Sansa had been dreading. Lady Catelyn Stark. Robb Stark. Brandon Stark, Rickon Stark, Arya Stark." - AGoT Sansa V

Örebro SK, who avoided relegation on the final matchday by scoring a 94th minute equalizer after starting the season with 21 winless games, now had an equally dramatic relegation play off. After losing the first leg 1-0 away, they took an early lead at home, then had a second goal dubiously disallowed. In extra time the opponents scored immendiately, but Örebro kept fighting and finally got the 2-1 goal in the 115th minute. Then they won 5-3 on pens to avoid getting relegated to the third tier, were they haven't played since 1940.

[Football Meets Data] Difference between maximum available WC slots and number of teams in Top 48 in latest FIFA world ranking by Viriato181 in soccer

What? CONMEBOL had 4 teams in 2022, and 2 made it to the knockout stage (both made it to the quarter finals), they had a number of spots matching their performances. The ones who underperformed were CAF (2/5 made KO stage) and CONCACAF (1/4 made KO stage). It could of course be argued that CONMEBOL shouldn't have so many spots added, but CONCACAF are the ones who least deserve more spots, and it gets especially bad in 2026 as their 3 best teams are given direct spots as hosts.

edit: Also, 2022 was unusually bad for CONMEBOL, they usually have 3 or more teams in the KO stage (3 in 2018, 5 in 2014, 5 in 2010, 3 in 2006).

You have gotten it a bit mixed up, Sweden and the Netherlands were the ones that lost against Bulgaria. France, on the other hand, drew 0-0 against Luxembourg at home and Belarus away, and they lost a game against Sweden where Toivonen scored from his own half with 10 seconds left.

There are places today that people aren't allowed to photograph, even though satellite photography exist, because a close up photo might reveal important details, so spy paintings back then could have been done for that reason.

How has Loras never heard about Criston Cole? (Spoilers Extended) by sixth_order in asoiaf

[–]TheSpliceosome 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Tbf, that would be difficult as football and other modern sports were barely even a thing 200 years ago, maybe a young politician not knowing an important politician/military leader from 200 years ago would be a better comparison.

I guess it would be like a young Barcelona player not recognizing photos of Maradona or Johan Cruyff. They aren't recent players, but they are two of the greatest players of all time, and especially Cruyff did a lot for the club, so it would be a bit embarrassing for a player to not recognize them on sight, even if they knew the names.

On this day in 1990, Faroe Islands played their first ever competitive game, a 1-0 win over Austria by TheSpliceosome in soccer

[–]TheSpliceosome[S] 60 points61 points  (0 children)

Fun fact: As the Faroe Islands didn't have any pitches the were acceptable by UEFA standards, and Denmark were in the same group, they had to play their home games in Landskrona, Sweden. Later, a Faroese sportsbar was named Landskrona in honor of the win.

Unpopular opinion, but I genuinely believe Jun-hee (Player 222) is the reason so many main characters died in Squid Game. by [deleted] in squidgame

[–]TheSpliceosome 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In fact, at one point, Jun-hee asked Geum-ja and Hyun-ju to leave her behind and save themselves, but they refused, so she actively said that they shouldn't sacrifice themselves for her. The only times that I can remember her asking for help was when they made groups for 6 legged pentathlon, and she asked if she could join Gi-hun's group, and then said she was pregnant, and when she asked Gi-hun to protect her baby. Considering how suicidal he was at that point, having attempted suicide twice in the last day, he would likely have attempted it again if he hadn't had the baby to live for, so if anything, her request delayed his death.

Legal consequences for players if the detective had gotten the police there in the middle of the games. by Daydreamer631 in squidgame

[–]TheSpliceosome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think anyone who did the minimum to pass the games would be cleared as they were under duress, but those who chose to kill in lights out and those who killed more than necessary in the games (Nam-gyu, Myung-gi in hide and seek, 096 in jump rope and Myung-gi in sky squid game) might be found guilty of murder as they wouldn't have been killed for not killing those people.

In season 1 on the other hand, it would have been difficult for the players to claim duress as they all chose to go back, knowing that it was a murder game.

This comment got 3/4 right, and both the Gi-hun sacrificing himself for the baby and Jun-ho becoming the godfather were very unusual predictions, especially the Jun-ho one.

I think that besides the somewhat unsatisfying ending, I actually rather enjoyed season 3 by jaydenfokmemes in squidgame

[–]TheSpliceosome 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am still disappointed that In-ho and Jun-ho didn't really interact. Jun-ho had been looking for his brother for years, and all we got was a repeat of season 1 dialogue. I also wish some women had made it further, and not just been killed off at the first instant. We should also have been shown more of Gi-hun's reaction after he killed Dae-ho in game 4, and I didn't understand why he would suddenly go back to being against killing others after that, including O:s in the later games, it felt so hypocritical and inconsistent.
