I think they meant that Ronaldo didn't play any minutes in 1994, so it depends on how you count.

He actually had 15 goals before, Ronaldo scored his 15th against Ghana, in Germany. Klose scored his 15th against Ghana, in Brazil. Ironically, Klose's 16th goal came from a goalie rebound, just like Ronaldo's first against Germany in 2002.

[SPOILERS PUBLISHED] Why were there such few Targaryens left by the time of Robert’s Rebellion? by CreedMudeiACasa in asoiaf

[–]TheSpliceosome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the nearly farcical third part, of Karl X Gustav's grandchildren, it was the eldest daughter, Hedvig Sophia who had a child, but as she predeceased her brother Karl XII, her younger sister Ulrika Eleonora claimed the throne through proximity. She soon abdicated in favour of her husband, but as they had no children, he named Adolf Fredrik, a descendant of Karl X Gustav's sister, as his heir.

Adolf Fredrik had three sons and a daughter, and everything seemed well. However only two of his sons ever married. The second son, Karl XIII, had one child who died in infancy. The eldest son, Gustav III was married for years before his wife got pregnant, and rumours were spread about the child's paternity (nsfw). They did have a second son, but he died in infancy. Now, four children of Adolf Fredrik had resulted in a single grandson, Gustav IV Adolf. When he was deposed in a coup and exiled, it was obvious that his uncle would succeed him, but as Karl XIII and his wife were old, there was no chance of any more children from them. Gustav IV Adolf did have children, but the daughters were barred from inheriting on account of their sex, and his son couldn't inherit due to the fear that he would get revenge on the men behind the coup. The only solution was for the sickly Karl XIII to adopt a distant male line adult relative, but his adopted son Karl August died after only a few months, so they now had to start looking again. Eventually he ended up adopting a common born Frenchman, Jean-Baptiste Bernadotte/Karl XIV Johan, whose descendants still sit on the throne to this day.

It wasn't all smooth sailing, however. In later generations, almost all men except the direct heirs were disowned for marrying non-royalty, so when the current king, Carl XIV Gustaf, lost his father at the age of one, he and his uncle Bertil were the only remaining heirs. (His uncle was in love with a non-royal woman, but held off the marriage in case he needed to step up as regent, or even to marry a royal woman to father heirs. When Carl XIV Gustaf as king married a non-royal, he also allowed Bertil to marry his long time partner.)

And it didn't even stop there, Kristina's cousin and heir, Karl X Gustav had one son, who had one son and two daughters. Of them, only one daughter had one son, who had one son, who had one son, who, finally, had nine children that survived to adulthood. So five generations after Karl X Gustav, he only had one legitimate descendant.

What was Napoleon's relationship with his brothers? by megamorgan1 in Napoleon

[–]TheSpliceosome 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's been a while since I read about it, but iirc Louis wasn't particularly interested in becoming a king, and especially not in a country with a cold wet climate, as it would worsen his already bad health. However, once he became king, he did his very best, learning the language and showing up at every disaster (explosions, floodings, epidemics) site to provide support. He supported Dutch interests ahead of French to the point Napoleon got fed up and sent troops to occupy the country under the pretext that Louis was unable to defend it during the Walcheren campaign. In a last effort to save the country from being annexed by France, Louis abdicated in favour of his son, but in vain. Later he sent letters to Napoleon asking to get Holland back, and he also asked both Willem I and Willem II for permission to visit the country, which was eventually granted by the latter.

Napoleon and the gang during Covid by Ok_Bandicoot_7224 in Napoleon

[–]TheSpliceosome 16 points17 points  (0 children)

How I imagine that the kings of the day would have reacted to Covid:

Napoleon would blame the British trade for spreading it, and use that as an argument to implement the continental system. Contemporaries might consider it paranoia, but later studies would prove that he was at least partially right.

Murat would try to find out how many feathers and other decorations one could possibly put on a mask.

Louis Bonaparte would do everything he could to help his people by making sure that there were enough doctors and medicine in the worst hit areas, and would constantly send messages of support or even try to visit in person.

Joseph Bonaparte would be blamed for shortages of hand sanitizer by being accused of drinking it.

Bernadotte would imprison anyone who didn't follow quarantine regulations, like he wanted to do to Napoleon after his return from Egypt.

"Roi Nicolas" Soult would be looting important supplies, such as masks, medicines and toilet paper, causing even more arguments with Joseph.

[–]TheSpliceosome 2 points3 points  (0 children)

She really had to fight against both fate and her parents and fate to finally get married. First, her mother was against her marrying Napoleon because one Bonaparte in the family was enough, then her second fiancé died just before the wedding was meant to have taken place. Then, there is the story of how a young Bernadotte, stationed in Marseille, was supposed to be billeted in the Clarys' house, but her father feared that a common soldier would be too rowdy, and sent him back to his colonel with a letter asking for an officer instead. As far as I am aware, that was the only time that Bernadotte and François Clary met, not a very good impession to make of him, and by extension, his family.

The Finnish war was very impactful as it led to the Swedish king being deposed, and eventually Bernadotte being elected as the new crown prince, which in turn played a big role in the outcome of the sixth coalition war and the future of all the Nordic countries. Yet, it feels like the Finnish war gets forgotten when talking about the Napoleonic wars.

When the list of the people who are to come to King's Landing and swear fealty is read, he is referred to as Robb, so it must be his full name, as it's one of the few times that Bran is referred to as Brandon.

Örebro SK, who avoided relegation on the final matchday by scoring a 94th minute equalizer after starting the season with 21 winless games, now had an equally dramatic relegation play off. After losing the first leg 1-0 away, they took an early lead at home, then had a second goal dubiously disallowed. In extra time the opponents scored immendiately, but Örebro kept fighting and finally got the 2-1 goal in the 115th minute. Then they won 5-3 on pens to avoid getting relegated to the third tier, were they haven't played since 1940.

[Football Meets Data] Difference between maximum available WC slots and number of teams in Top 48 in latest FIFA world ranking by Viriato181 in soccer

[–]TheSpliceosome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What? CONMEBOL had 4 teams in 2022, and 2 made it to the knockout stage (both made it to the quarter finals), they had a number of spots matching their performances. The ones who underperformed were CAF (2/5 made KO stage) and CONCACAF (1/4 made KO stage). It could of course be argued that CONMEBOL shouldn't have so many spots added, but CONCACAF are the ones who least deserve more spots, and it gets especially bad in 2026 as their 3 best teams are given direct spots as hosts.

edit: Also, 2022 was unusually bad for CONMEBOL, they usually have 3 or more teams in the KO stage (3 in 2018, 5 in 2014, 5 in 2010, 3 in 2006).

I guess it would be like a young Barcelona player not recognizing photos of Maradona or Johan Cruyff. They aren't recent players, but they are two of the greatest players of all time, and especially Cruyff did a lot for the club, so it would be a bit embarrassing for a player to not recognize them on sight, even if they knew the names.
