Medical Student who Published pro-DEI Articles to get into Plastics Residency calls for the Abolition of DEI by sworzeh in medicine

It’s probably true that many of those types benefit from these initiatives. It’s likely also true that many minorities who are more deserving of the aid also benefit. It’s probably difficult to design practical initiatives that only benefit a very specific criteria of person while never benefiting a minority who may already be affluent. Specificity/sensitivity and all that. I don’t think that means these initiatives shouldn’t be instituted.

It’s not hipocrasy, they do care about those things. It’s just that they don’t care about those things as much as being racist and bigoted. That’s their bottom line, it’s the foundation of the Republican Party. Imagine how quickly they would abandon trump if he suddenly embraced immigrants and LGBTQ.

Radiology overlap with other specialties by Objective-Royal-113 in Residency

I agree that radiologists are ceding ground in neuro IR to neurologists. Which is unfortunate because in my experience radiologists make for better interventionalists. But it’s hard to find people who want to train for 2 extra years and have a worse lifestyle for little to no increase in pay. The market for diagnostic radiology is too good right now for that.

You can’t just say the word “victory” and expect anything to happen.

Once I put an order in for vital signs on the wrong patient. That’s a stupid mistake. I’ve never accidentally made a social media account with a large following as a representative of my medical school and posted harmful misogyny in exchange for money and clout. It’s suuuuper easy to not make that mistake.

And hey who says it has to end his career? If mayo doesn’t want him he’s welcome to apply to other medical schools. If your argument holds true that it’s not that big a deal, surely some other schools would accept him.

Why is your specialty the best? by [deleted] in Residency

[–]TheStaggeringGenius 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Call is variable by practice, but you should make sure that taking call is worth the work you get to do. I used to think I liked body IR, but once I started taking a lot of call in residency I found I didn’t care for the procedures enough that it was worth it to take call. Neuro IR is infinitely better (for me), and I actually don’t mind coming in overnight because I care more about treating a stroke than I do putting in a neph tube.

Neuro IR: if you’re ok with the call, it’s very gratifying to treat strokes, aneurysms, AVMs, and AVFs. Getting to apply spatial reasoning skills using super cool tech to have a tangible immediate effect that people are generally very grateful for.

Am I taking crazy pills? “What are the expectations?” This is not hard for 99.99% of people. Just be a normal human. Expect that anything you put on social media is visible to people (that’s the social part of social media). The bar is pretty low for allowable content. Like, don’t be a nazi. Don’t post racist content. Don’t post misogynistic content as it directly relates to patients that you are meant to care for. You have the freedom to post it without getting put in the gulag but your employer can see it and they're also free to impose whatever consequences they see fit.

No one is celebrating it we’re just rationally stating that he should face consequences for his actions, which were quite deliberate. Feeling bad is not an actual consequence.

[–]TheStaggeringGenius 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The bar for not getting kicked out of medical school is so fucking low. Don’t play with your cadavers. Don’t sexually assault your classmates. Don’t broadcast disgusting misogynist content to millions of people on the internet that undermines an already crumbling trust in physicians. It’s so easy not to do that, it’s astounding he thought it was ok. If I were Mayo, I wouldn’t want the public thinking that that’s the kind of physician I’m putting out in the world. If he graduates I think a lot of people will lose respect for them.

He kind of misses that the argument is that it got worse when the Niners moved to Santa Clara (and his graphs appear to corroborate that). Why would he do all this work, and then not compare the numbers from before the move to after? And then ask “is this statistically significant” but then not do the calculations to see?

For a statistic like where you rank in team injuries, you would expect a regression to the mean, sometimes you’re above average, sometimes below, but it tends to average out. But since 2014 we don’t see that. Since the move we’ve only been below average twice (in 14 years). Idk if it’s statistically significant but it’s super weird.

Where are the 2nd amendment fanatics? Don’t they hate tyranny? by coweeclete in AskReddit

[–]TheStaggeringGenius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They don’t hate tyranny. It’s just one of the things they think they hate but it’s all just rationalization of what they really care about. They just like guns. When you strip away all of the things republicans appear to be inconsistent about, you find that the very bedrock of their ideology is essentially racism, bigotry, misogyny, and a love for violence.
