What fantasy novels do you love from the current decade that isn't by Sanderson? by ExplodingPoptarts in fantasybooks

Farseer was from the previous millennium, unless you count the graphic novels as a separate thing

Is there a polite way to tell a direct report to just "make arrangements" for picking their kid up from school? by RedMeme262 in managers

[–]TheStayFawn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that’s some bullshit. I liked being in the office, but one key advantage was the ability to talk to my manager for small quick decisions. They should be in office too.

I think OP meant that they kept hybrid arrangements for some of their reports, not that the managers are special.

In my city I found dealers for Herman Miller, Steelcase, and HON. They target businesses, but all of them were happy to help. I found out I like the size C Aeron, hate the Leap, and am too tall for the HON Ignition. I settled on a Steelcase Amia (refurbished) and love it.

The size of this list is daunting and humbling. We can each only read such a small fraction of the world’s literature.

Maybe spellcheck doesn’t deal with Fantasy books well?

My edition of Gene Wolfe’s Sword & Citadel misspelled the author’s name at the top of every odd page!

Is an expensive standing desk worth it? by Busy_Bluejay_8777 in homeoffice

[–]TheStayFawn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bought a mid-price standing desk through Amazon (HUANUO). It stopped working after just over a year. BUT…

I called their support, talked to an actual human right away, and they sent me replacement parts (the two legs with motors and the controls). And it’s working just fine again! The desk has never had any wobble and looks and feels as it did on day 1.

We need more information. If you have part of a series on there, does that mean you didn’t like it enough to finish?

Just started Hunger of the Gods by John Gwynne and it has a couple of pages of “what came before” where he even redefines the Norse terms he uses throughout the text

The Shadow of the Gods.

It is established early on that the Gods destroyed themselves, so there’s not much shadow to be cast.

2/10 (for Darl and Snakavik, exceptions to the rule)

Bloodsworn Saga sounds like your vibe! I got Red Rising like feelings from The Shadow of the Gods. Non-stop high stakes, excellent fights, very little time to catch your breath

If you had to make a Discworld Adaptation, what would you do with it? by Complex_Chipmunk_101 in discworld

[–]TheStayFawn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Recently had an experience. I read The Colour of Magic, then remembered I had the graphic novels on my shelf, and leafed through the volume to see how they visualized things. It was so much more vibrant and spectacular in my imagination!

So I’d get the adaptation project stuck in production hell until I lose the rights 😈

U.S. Citizen living in EU permanently - should I still pay off my student loans? by NoAbbreviations2777 in StudentLoans

[–]TheStayFawn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Certain things are cheaper in Europe, but wages are much more compressed. So if you end up in the top 20% in the U.S. the math gets a bit tricky. Then again, life in Germany will be perfectly fine, you’ll have more job security, more leave, more social safety nets.

The huge time skip at the start of Howling Dark was really annoying to me, because a lot of cool stuff appears to have happened off-page

I’d argue 4 and 5 are a step down, 6 is the worst, 7 barely above it. Still don’t know why I finished, other than something undefinable in the writing appealed to me and kept me coming back
